Free Senior Citizen Activities & Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, rummikub, line dancing, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through October 31st. “I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets

crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior fall activities are extremely popular, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s new prevention campaign, Kids and Weed Don’t Roll Together, outlines unique and informative facts and education to help parents talk with their kids about how marijuana use affects their brain, health and safety. In the Massapequas, youth, on average, first use marijuana before the age of 15 (2018 YDS grades 7-12). When marijuana use starts before age 18, approximately 1 in 6 people will become addicted (Centers for Disease Control). Approximately 10 percent of people who use marijuana may develop what is called a marijuana use disorder—problems with their health, school, friendships, family or other conflicts in their life (NIDA). The Empire State Association of Assisted Living (ESAAL), which exclusively represents the majority of New York State’s assisted living communities, announces the recipients of its annual All Star Award. Chilitta Jackson, a Medical Secretary at The Bristal at Massapequa, is among the 21 winners honored by ESAAL during National Assisted Living Week, celebrated September 12th through 18th. “This year’s award recipients were chosen

from among thousands of healthcare workers. They represent the best and finest health professionals who daily, care for and help keep our cherished seniors safe and healthy,” states Lisa Newcomb, Executive Director, ESAAL. “We are delighted to pay tribute to these exceptional men and women, who dedicate their careers to caring for the elderly.” Chilitta was chosen as an award recipient for her positive attitude, and willingness to take on any task. She has been with The Bristal since

shortly after the building opened in 2007, starting as a caregiver, and then promoted several times following. High Achievers Are National Merit Semifinalists

Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District Two Massapequa High School seniors were among approximately 16,000 students nationwide to be named 2022 National Merit Semifinalists. The distinction was awarded to Matt McAuley and Hayley Tan by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Matt and Hayley were named semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program based on their performance on the PSAT. They now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for a chance to earn one of 7,500 scholarships, which will be offered in the spring. The nationwide pool of

semifinalists represents fewer than 1% of high school seniors, including the highest scorers in each state. The two students are very active at Massapequa High School, enrolling in challenging college-level courses and taking part in numerous clubs. Matt is presently taking Advanced Placement Calculus and German, and is a member of the German Club, German Honor Society, Key Club and varsity wrestling and cross-country teams. In college, he plans to major in computer science. Hayley belongs to the Spanish Honor Society

and the GSA. This year she is taking AP Calculus and AP Spanish, and wants to pursue a degree in neuroscience when she attends college next year. “I’m very proud,” Matt said of being named a National Merit Semifinalist. “You get to see the fruits of your labor paying off.” Added Hayley, “It’s a great honor. This achievement shows that my work is paying off more than I thought.” Matt and Hayley are longtime academic companions, having both attended McKenna Elementary School.

An enthusiastic and spirited crowd, highly energized for Massapequa High School’s first homecoming celebration in two years, cheered the Chiefs on to a shutout victory on Sept. 25. The 28-0 win for the football team capped a day of Massapequa pride, beginning with the homecoming parade along Park Boulevard and Merrick Road. The parade kicked off from Massapequa Park Village Hall, with retiring Superintendent Lucille Iconis and recently retired Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock serving as grand marshals. They rode through town in a red convertible and

were applauded for their combined 44 years of service to the district. At the front of the parade, a contingent of administrators and Board of Education trustees proudly walked behind the blue and gold Massapequa Public Schools “Excellence in Education” banner. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent housing. LICH has expanded their services. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking. All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER - Long Island will again unite in the fight against breast cancer with two Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks this year, on Sunday, October 17 at Jones Beach and Saturday, October 20 on Main Street in Riverhead. Both events will be held in accordance with CDC and NY State guidelines to ensure the safety of all attendees. Last year’s walk became virtual events due to the pandemic. In 2019, an estimated 65,000 participants joined the effort raising more than $2.5 million. Advance registration is free and open to individuals, teams, families, and groups at www.makingstrideswalk. org/longisland. The Society is requesting that all individuals sign up in advance to be kept abreast of important details, which will be updated regularly. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional walk might look different but our passion and

commitment to fight breast cancer is unchanged,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director of Development. “The health and safety of all our guests and participants is our number one priority. As the fall draws closer, event-based decisions may be made to best meet the health and safety needs of our supporters, staff, and volunteers, including options that help mitigate individual and community health risks,” she added. In its 28th year on Long Island, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the U.S. In New York, the American Cancer Society estimates 17,540 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 2,510 will succumb to the disease. Nationwide, 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. The American Cancer Society is the nation’s nonprofit leader in the

AUTISM WALK RAISES OVER $4,000 FOR AUTISM AWARENESS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand recently joined with colleagues in local government, Assemblyman Michael Durso and County Legislator James Kennedy to support the Town’s 13th Annual Walk for Autism held at John J. Burns Town Park. This walk has helped increase awareness for autism and supports those on the spectrum, and this year, more than $4,300 was raised to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, a dedicated facility that offers families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research while also building awareness. Metrix E-Learning System, the free online job skills training service, is offered through The Workforce Partnership a

consortium of local governments committed to providing free and valuable information and services to both employers and jobseekers. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Many people have experienced unimaginable and unprecedented hardship throughout this pandemic, and as a result, many businesses have closed and individuals have lost work because of it. As we continue turning the corner in the fight

against COVID-19, residents are looking to return to work and we’re proud to offer the Metrix E-Learning System to those who seek to ‘skill-up’ and re-enter the workforce more capable than when they left it.
