Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and Massapequa Park resident Donna Rowan, joined by Massapequa Park Village Mayor Jeff Pravato, honored individuals involved in a dog rescue
mission lasting eight days over summer in the Massapequa community. Hundreds of local residents, as well as the local police, were involved in efforts to bring home Toretto, a terrier-mix from Massapequa Park.
Supervisor Saladino thanked all involved and acknowledged the great sense of community such events foster, when neighbors band together to help one another.

The Power of Mondays “Where we put our awareness, and for how long, maps our destiny.” - Dr. Joe Dispenza As I write this column on a Friday morning, my mind is already filled with the promise of tranquility, relaxation and family time that Saturday and Sunday brings. Ah… the finish line at last; it’s Friday! “TGIF,” or as Rihanna says, “Cheers to the Freakin’ Weekend!” For those of us that lead hectic, multi-tasking lives during the week, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The promise of a Friday, and the relief it brings, is necessary for re-centering our spirits and re-charging our batteries. I think we can all agree that there is nothing wrong with loving Fridays. However, I want to encourage everyone reading this to… wait for it… also love Mondays. Don’t hate me. I’ll never forget a New York Times article I read years ago that ominously stated, “Heart Attacks Are More Common on Mondays.” Why would more heart attacks happen on a Monday? It’s just
another day of the week. The “why” is in our perception and our anticipation of what Monday means. Dr. Joe Dispenza, a prominent researcher in the field of the mind/body connection, famously explains, “Thoughts are the domain of the mind, while feelings are the domain of the body.” In other words, our brain processes the fact that it’s Monday, our mind creates a thought and a story around that fact, and then our body reacts to the story our mind tells us. Follow? If we tell ourselves that Monday is the start of “another long, stress-filled week,” our body will then react to that negative story we are telling the mind. You can probably trace this back to when you were a kid and dreading having to return to school on Monday, after a funfilled and carefree weekend. This thought pattern is a habit, nothing more. Let’s re-frame the story we tell ourselves about Monday. Monday is a new opportunity to put all of that inspiration and clarity you’ve gained during the weekend to work for you. It’s a new day

to create a more successful, empowered outcome than you experienced the previous week. Let’s look at it this way: weekends are for rest and relaxation, while Mondays are for action and innovation. I can’t tell you how many times I was enjoying a relaxing, fun-filled weekend when I was unexpectedly struck with an AhHa moment. Suddenly, I was champing at the bit for Monday morning, so that I could put this lightning bolt of inspiration to work in a new and exciting way. Mondays are the days that dreams are made of. Make that call, send that email, present that idea, and when another Friday rolls around, celebrate all you’ve accomplished by treating yourself to a fabulous weekend.

The walk is a fundraiser to support HMTC’s education programs across Long Island that empower, mobilize and create Upstanders – people who stand up to antisemitism and intolerance, and advocate acceptance for all.

Holocaust Memorial Film Screening in Glen Cove The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County’s David Taub Reel Upstanders Film Series presents a film screening of Into the Arms of Strangers – Stories of the Kindertransport, on Sunday, October 14th, at 1 p.m., at HMTC, Welwyn Preserve, located at 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove. The screening is in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Kindertransport. Into the Arms of Strangers – Stories of the Kindertransport is an Oscar award-winning documentary, directed by Mark Jonathan Harris, with narration by Judy Dench. The film tells the extraordinary story of how Great Britain offered refuge to over 10,000
unaccompanied minor children whose parents secretly smuggled them out of Nazi-occupied Germany and German annexed countries between 1938 and 1939. Special guests at the screening will be Holocaust Survivors Anita Weisbord and Helga Shepard, who were part of the Kindertransport. $10 suggested donation to attend. Public Plea to Halt LIRR Fare Hike NYS Senate Majority Delegation called on MTA to Protect LIRR riders from a fare increase. On Monday, September 17th, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) was joined by the Senate Majority’s Long Island Delegation at a press conference at the Bethpage Train Station to call for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority
(MTA) to put any proposed 2019 fare hike on hold until it makes measurable improvements in its service, equipment failures and delays. The press conference introduced legislation sponsored by Senator Elaine Phillips (7th Senate District), and Assemblyman Dean Murray (3rd Assembly District), to protect commuters
from facing even more disruptions due to the LIRR’s loss of any revenue. The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Responding to the need in her own practice, breast surgeon Dr. Virginia Maurer first made breast health education programs available to her patients and to their families. These programs became so successful, which encouraged her to reach out to the general public, but particularly to adolescent women through high school breast health programs. One of Dr. Maurer’s beliefs is that the choices we make early in life can affect our future beast health. Dr. Maurer actively participates as Founder, motivator and as an inspiration for this foundation. As of today, the Maurer Foundation has brought their life-saving message of breast cancer prevention and early detection to over 80% of Long Island’s Public High Schools! From reaching just over a thousand people in 1995, The Maurer Foundation, supported by steadfast board members, experienced staff and gifted volunteers, has continued to broaden their capacity, allowing them to reach hundreds of thousands of people! Through partnerships, they educate the public to strive toward their goal to be recognized as the leading source of current and accurate breast health information! The Maurer Foundation is holding their Cocktails for a Cause event, which will take place on October 23rd at Havana Central Restaurant from 6-8PM.

The Massapequa Philharmonic will kickoff its 2018-2019 season with a program featuring the evocative music of Smetana, Sibelius and Dvoák. Led by the orchestra’s music director, David Bernard, the program opens with Smetana’s riveting tone poem, “The Moldau,” followed by Sibelius introspective, and passionate Violin Concerto featuring 14-year-old violinist, Michelle Stern as soloist. The program
concludes with Dvoák’s brilliant and lyrical Symphony No. 6. “This program will draw you in and captivate you from the beginning to the end,” says Music Director David Bernard. “Through ‘The Moldau,’ Sibelius paints a picture of immense beauty as he spins a compelling narrative from the life and drama around this beloved river. Sibelius fuses the perfect balance of passion, lyricism and brilliance throughout his violin concerto, and Michelle Stern will dazzle with her artistry. In Dvoák’s Symphony No. 6, you hear the youthful exuberance of the newly famous Czech composer as he finally found his voice and the recognition he deserved, in a symphony that is riveting in its energy and beauty from the first note to the

Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl About to Take Over Las Vegas By Allison Kugel
Gwen Stefani spent her childhood and adolescence in Anaheim, California, a suburban girl living a stone’s throw from Disneyland. It was her older brother, Eric, who founded No Doubt, that would help Stefani make her way into the musical limelight with their 1995 breakout album, Tragic Kingdom. The band’s unique sound coupled with Stefani’s platinum blonde hair, red lips and punk rock fashion, brought the singer to Rockstar status in the 1990s. Her first solo album, 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and L.A.M.B. fashion label, catapulted her into the music and style icon stratosphere in the early 2000s. Follow up albums like 2006’s The Sweet Escape and No Doubt’s 2012 reunion album, Push and Shove capped off two decades of non-stop recording and touring for the Grammy-winning artist.
Allison Kugel: Was this Las Vegas Residency a family decision? Gwen Stefani: As a mom, if you look at my touring for the last ten years, I haven’t really toured. In the past, I did tour for seven years. It’s hard with the kids, because they’re in school and I’m not home schooling. I did my last tour because I had this unexpected life crisis and then the music came pouring out of me from
Allison Kugel: What does performing live give you, personally and energetically? Gwen Stefani: Being on stage for me, I always forget how much it’s a part of who I am. I’ve done it for my whole life, pretty much. I always think I don’t want to do it. I always think it’s fine if I never do it again. Then when I get on stage, even when I’m sound checking, I’m like, “Oh My God, I love this!” I love my music, I love being up there, I love the attention and I love being able to share that love with people and get that exchange. I don’t understand why I like it so much. Allison Kugel: It feeds your soul. You’re connecting with source and you’re in a zone. Gwen Stefani: It’s my gift. It’s what I’m here for. I’m obviously at the end of my journey of being a musician… Allison Kugel: Why would you say that? Gwen Stefani: Well because of my age, and I’ve been doing it for thirty something years. It’s perfect for me to be able to do a Las Vegas show, because not only does it work for me as a mom, but it also works creatively. It’s a new challenge. It’s going to be a way to express myself and do my whole catalog of music that defines every single period in my life.
Allison Kugel: And your audience is going to get a more intimate experience with you than they would in a stadium setting. Gwen Stefani: It is a much smaller audience than I’m used to, under five thousand people. It’s going to be so different and that’s something I need. When you’ve toured for however many years I have, it’s super awesome, but let’s do something new! That’s why even doing The Voice for the last couple of years was so inspiring for me. I think everybody wants something challenging and new to look forward to. Allison Kugel: You went to see Jennifer Lopez’s Las Vegas show, All I Have. I’m assuming the two of you discussed her Las Vegas Residency. Did she give you any advice? Gwen Stefani: I’ve always looked up to Jennifer in the sense that we’re exactly the same age, and I remember when No Doubt was coming out and she hadn’t done Jenny from The Block yet, but she had that song out, Waiting for Tonight. At the time I was working with Prince and he started comparing me and Jennifer, and at that time I didn’t even see how I was in the same category with her. She was Jennifer Lopez and I was in a band called No Doubt (laughs). But now here we both are doing these residencies all these years later. She’s always invited me to her kids’ birthday parties and things like that. She is a crazy worker. I cannot believe how much she works! Allison Kugel: It doesn’t seem human, right? Multiple television shows, Las Vegas Residency, albums… Gwen Stefani: I know. I don’t understand it. Going to see her, I was studying the production of her show. The show was incredible, and she works so hard on stage. It was so inspiring to see… and scary! When I came backstage to talk to her afterwards, she comes out of the dressing room looking like a Barbie Doll. She was breathtaking on stage, but when you see her up close, it’s like, “What?! It’s not possible. You are so gorgeous!” She was just so glamorous. We talked for awhile and she was like, “Yeah, I’ve just done 100 shows…” And I’m like, “Whoa, that’s a lot of shows!” (Laughs) And she still has forty more to go. She’s really enjoyed it, but she said it is challenging. Allison Kugel: The title of your Las
Vegas show, Just A Girl, is the title of one of your biggest hits, but it has a double meaning for you. You’re always saying, “I’m just a girl from Orange County…” Is that your way of keeping yourself grounded? Gwen Stefani: Honestly, I think if you really knew me or saw my family and how I grew up, I am 100% the same person I have always been. When I wrote that song, Just A Girl, I was twenty-five years old, going to college, still living at my parent’s house, and I was very naïve. I was driving one day and I’m thinking, “Wow! I really have a different position in this world, being that I’m a female.” Allison Kugel: Has Blake Shelton (Stefani’s boyfriend of three years) had creative input with this Las Vegas show? Gwen Stefani: Obviously he’s my best friend, so I’m bouncing stuff off him all the time. He’s one of those people in my life that’s super supportive and gets me motivated. There’s a whole bunch of songs about him in the show. Like anybody, with their best friend, we share everything together. Allison Kugel: What’s your routine before you step out on stage? Do you pray? Do you meditate? How do you gear up to give your best performance? Gwen Stefani: I don’t meditate. I’m a prayer. I pray, but first I do my makeup (laughs). My makeup is huge for me. Putting on my makeup and getting ready, there is a kind of meditation in the preparation. And the praying for me is really important. We do a group prayer circle. When I think about how ordinary I’ve always been, and to think that I’ve created all these songs, I don’t know where they
come from. I always think that it’s got to be a channeling, and it just comes through me. It’s a spiritual thing that has been given to me to share. Fight to Save Cherished Dog Park Senator John Brooks today was joined by dozens of local community members and advocates to demand that the Oyster Bay dog park be saved. The Town of Oyster Bay, recently, and without informing the public, moved forward with plans to scrap the dog park and sell the land. Senator Brooks is committed to keep fighting for Oyster Bay residents, and the quality of life they enjoy. “The Oyster Bay administration has hit a new low, planning to scrap a dog park to line their own pockets,” Senator John Brooks said. “Community residents enjoy having

Shame on Oyster Bay leadership for trying to sell this park.” “When I learned about this plan, I was enraged and heartbroken,” Massapequa resident and regular patron of the dog park, Emily Handy said. “I love the dog park and I love coming here. It’s a huge benefit of living in Massapequa, and it’s the only park like it around here. For the Town of Oyster Bay to try to sell it in the dark of night is outrageous and wrong. Thank you Senator Brooks for standing up for me, my dog Henry, and everyone
who enjoys this park, and is leading this fight.” The Town of Oyster Bay administration tried to put through a plan to sell the dog park, located in East Massapequa, without any public input and without informing the community members who frequent the area park. The plan was tabled temporarily, but the Oyster Bay administration made it clear that they will continue to move forward with this plan. That is why Senator John Brooks organized the rally, to save the Oyster Bay dog park, and will work tirelessly to fight this plan.

In partnership with the Village of Massapequa Park, Massapequa Elks Lodge and the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) will provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Wednesday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m., at the Massapequa Elks Lodge, located at 2162 Veterans Boulevard, Massapequa; and Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Park Village Hall, located at 151 Front Street, Massapequa Park. According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 116 people a day die
from opioid-related drug overdoses. YESCCC has been front and center, combating the opioid crisis, and delivers free opioid prevention education and Naloxone training to Massapequa’s local governments, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose; namely slowed or stopped breathing. Expanding the awareness and availability of this medication is a key part of the public health response to the opioid epidemic. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose, and when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United

Since 1997, YESCCC has worked with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) to ensure Massapequa’s children, teens and young adults grow up healthy and make safe choices during adolescence. Two Massapequa High School students were recognized by the Long Island Arts Alliance with Scholar-Artist awards. Seniors Faith Centa and Antoinette Corigliano were selected to LIAA’s Class of 2019. The program recognizes students who excel academically in the areas of music, visual arts, dance, theater or media arts. They were recognized at a ceremony at the Tilles Center at Long Island University’s C.W. Post on September 12th. Faith was a ScholarArtist Award winner in the dance category. She has been dancing since she was
3 years old at local studios and has been enrolled in the dance program at the Long Island High School for the Arts for the past two years. After high school, she hopes to pursue a career in dance. On being named a Scholar-Artist, Faith said, “It makes me feel very proud to be a part of the arts community.” Antoinette was an Award of Merit winner in the music category for her vocal performances. She has been singing since joining the chorus in fourth grade at Birch Lane Elementary School, and won the Berner Idol competition in seventh-

Additionally, she is a member of the Chordettes barbershop vocal group, regularly performs the National Anthem at Massapequa High School sports games, and has been in both middle school and high school musical productions, including her role as Bertha in last year’s Pippin. Antoinette submitted her NYSSMA All-State audition piece and Faith choreographed and performed a solo dance.

Celebrating Students’ Individuality Expanding Elementary Language McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District celebrated the unique qualities of each of its 449 students with a schoolwide art project. Each month, the school is promoting different character education themes. Diversity and tolerance were chosen for
September. To emphasize those concepts, each teacher read The Crayon Box That Talked to their classes. The book emphasizes harmony through diversity, as well as the spirit of cooperation. Every student colored a paper crayon and drew a self-portrait to express his
or her individuality and creativity. The crayons were then hung up together on the character education bulletin board near the main office, along with the quote, “We are a great bunch of students, each one of us unique, and when we are together, our school is complete.”

The Massapequa School District has expanded its Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) program this year to include fifth-grade. Students in grades 3-5 receive twenty minutes of Spanish instruction twice a week, and the district has three FLES teachers to support the young language learners. The fifth-grade FLES curriculum relates to the
Next Generation English Language Arts standards and social studies learning standards. Topics include community, economy and commerce, as well as the Aztec and Inca Empires. Before learning Spanish words and phrases relating to these topics, students reviewed material from fourth-grade. This year’s fifth-graders are the first group of students to receive
three years of Spanish instruction in elementary school prior to selecting a language to study in middle school, and beyond. Upon entering Berner Middle School, students can choose from French, German, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Fifth-graders will attend presentations in December to learn about these options and make their selections.
