Don’t assume you can fill up at your destination for the return trip home. Wear a life jacket. In the autumn, as water temperatures start to fall, boaters who accidentally fall overboard run an increased risk of hypothermia. While children under 13 must wear a life jacket when the boat is underway by law, it’s a good idea for adults to wear them, too – especially at night. Purchase life jackets with lights attached so rescuers can find you in the water. Make sure they fit over your bulky “fall layers” – jackets, sweatshirts, etc. If you don’t have a life jacket, you can borrow a life jacket for free from one of the 160+ Sea Tow Foundation life jacket loaner stations. During the fall, the waterways are less crowded. While this is peaceful, it also means that if you run into a problem, you might not see another boater. You can use your VHF radio to call for help even in spots where your cell phone has no signal. Autumn’s arrival doesn’t mean the boating and fishing season has to come to an end. Quite the contrary! Most anglers will tell you that some of the year’s best fishing occurs in the fall, and boaters agree that leaf-peeping while slowly cruising through calm, mirror-like waters takes on an almost ethereal quality. However, the arrival of fall’s shorter days and colder temperatures does require boaters to take some extra precautions in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for all. With this in mind, the Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote boating safety, offers the following six tips for boaters and anglers who go out on the water this fall. Update your charts. Local aids to navigation like channel markers and buoys placed by local authorities may be pulled as early as October in some areas. Cliché? Sure. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were
made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history. Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

New District Superintendent
As students and teachers return to the classroom this fall, newly appointed Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis is preparing to lead the district on its longstanding path of excellence in a style that is hands-on, personal and open. “I’m a people person; I love to connect with people, listen, and more significantly, treat every individual with the same respect. That’s very important to me,” she said. Described as a “childcentered decision-maker with a comprehensive view of education, curriculum and instruction,” the Board of Education unanimously selected Iconis to succeed Charles Sulc who retired in June. She was officially sworn in on July 9th. “I’m very excited about the challenges of maintaining and growing what we have here in Massapequa,” Iconis said. “The number one goal for the coming year is to maintain the caliber of education the district is known for. We know that goal comes in the face of some grave challenges, fiscally, as we continue to operate under the New York State property tax cap, and instructionally, as we work diligently to infuse the Common
Core Learning Standards throughout the curriculum at every grade level. But we are committed to preserving our high-quality core instructional programs and high achievement for our students.” An educator for 35 years, Iconis was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Valley Stream and is a product of Valley Stream Public Schools. She began her career in Franklin Square just shy of her 20th birthday after graduating from Hofstra University with a bachelor’s degree in history and education. She also earned her master’s degree in Reading and Literacy, and a certificate of advanced study in Educational Administration from Hofstra. In the words of her mother, Iconis wanted to be a teacher from the moment she was born. An only child with lots of cousins, she recalls tormenting them during weekly family gatherings to play “school” in the makeshift classroom she set up in the basement of her home. There was a folder for each “student,” she said, and unlike other children her age, for Christmas she asked for a blackboard or filing cabinets.
Early in her career, she taught first, fourth and fifth grade at Franklin Square’s Washington Street School. Eleven year later she became the school’s Reading Specialist for remedial and enrichment students and then became the reading coordinator for the three elementary schools in the district. She worked for the Hofstra University Reading Clinic in addition to teaching during the day. “There is nothing more rewarding than that ‘aha’ moment when a child finally gets it,” Iconis explained. “I always routed for the underdog, the one that may have struggled … because I believe that if a student tries hard enough, anything can be achieved,” she said. “I made time in my classroom for my students to teach…whether it was as ‘teacher for an hour’ or ‘teacher for a lesson.’ When they were able to explain the material, that’s when I knew they got it. The experience builds confidence and self-esteem and gives everyone the opportunity to shine.” In August, 1999 Iconis transitioned from teacher to administrator. She was hired by Massapequa School District as Assistant Principal of East Lake Elementary School and promoted to Principal a year later. There, she has led the district to some of its greatest successes. She led a five-year initiative that earned the school the coveted Blue Ribbon School of Excellence from the federal government and as a fierce proponent of giving children with special needs the opportunity to learn alongside their peers with typical needs, she was handpicked to start up the Eagle Program at East Lake for autistic students district-
wide. The program, now approaching its 10-year anniversary, is showing tangible results. “These kids that were told they couldn’t make it are now getting ready to graduate,” she beamed. “They are working with job coaches in businesses throughout the community and will hopefully be gainfully employed after graduation….all because of this program. I was privileged to be asked to lead this effort, but I was also privileged to have an incredible staff — from the teachers, the secretaries, the custodians, every facet contributed to its success. I always promoted to the student body that “we are all different but beautifully made. These students were welcomed and embraced and made to feel that they are part of the fabric of East Lake.” Iconis became Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education in 2005 and then elevated to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in 2009. As Assistant Superintendent, she played an integral role in the district-wide implementation of fullday kindergarten, the school-wide enrichment program, Magnet; and the balanced approach to literacy program. Two years later she took on the added responsibility of Student Support Services, which she handled until she was tapped for the top post. Now, as Superintendent, new initiatives to strengthen support and achievement at Alfred G. Berner Middle School will roll out this fall. The most dramatic change is the school’s shift in operations to what is called a “house structure.” This new organizational structure is designed to better meet the specific needs of students by making class
scheduling more flexible and increasing continuity between students, staff and the curriculum on each grade level. The house structure is phase two of a multi-tiered plan to position the middle school for more rigor by the time elementary students instructed under the Common Core Learning Standards enter seventh grade. The first phase was the infusion of exploratory classes that enable students to discover interests and or/ talents outside of the core curriculum. After success with the reading intervention program Read 180, the district is excited to pilot Math 180 in middle school math support classes. The CCLS-aligned program builds confidence and conceptual understanding through a technology-infused model that incorporates individualized, group and classroom learning. As Iconis focuses on the year ahead, she points to the strengths that will advance the district in the coming year. On fiscal responsibility and efficiency, she said, “We have been ahead of the curve to seek out consortiums and other means of curbing expenses throughout the district. As a result of those savings, we have been able to redistribute funds in ways that have improved our district for our students.” On the early intervention program, she said, “The philosophy is that time and resources spent upfront to help students early on is most beneficial and costeffective in the long run.” On technology, “We are one of the strongest, most advanced districts in the state and we have a talented team that keeps us on the path of advancement. And on her staff, “We pride ourselves on being
a friendly, accessible and open district. I believe in always having the conversation to dispel any misconceptions and to answer the questions our residents have. I encourage our residents to call if they have a question or concern. We are proud of what we do and we are here to help.” During her first Superintendent’s Conference before the entire staff, she advised them to focus on “what is possible instead of what is probable. There are a lot of issues, from APPR, CCLS, differentiation; the profession is being attacked. We have to always remember what our focus is, and that’s the children. We can’t lose sight of that.” Iconis lives in Garden City with her husband. They have two sons, one is a composer/lyricist and the other is a teacher. The district is not yet planning to fill Iconis’ former position.

Families from East Lake Elementary School in Massapequa Park gathered Friday night, September 20th for its annual Back To School Outdoor Movie Night. Students and their families from the elementary school set up chairs and blankets to
watch the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The event was sponsored by the East Lake PTA, with PTA 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, Lauren Gonzalez and Roseann Blejec co-chairing the event. The evening was complete with popcorn
and drinks, as well as treat bags for the kids. Additionally, five lucky children received candy bars that had a golden ticket, mimicking the film. Each of the five golden tickets entitled the holder to a special prize basket.

WEST POINT VISIT - Cub Scouts from Pack 696, Miles Todtfeld, Angelo Foto and Brian Pianese, recently traveled to West Point Military Academy to experience collegiate football, breathtaking scenery and an unmatched look at America’s history. The day opened with a cadet parade in full uniform, followed by a personal tour by a West Point cadet, which was full of U.S. history including the opportunity of seeing statues of Mac Arthur, Patterson and Eisenhower. Their day concluded with a mid-day football game, Army vs. Lake Forest, which was enhanced by a live cannon firing to celebrate key plays made by the home team. The scouts thoroughly enjoyed making friends with the cadets.

New legislation requires ALL homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department THIS year in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. This is part of a new initiative to protect tax dollars from being lost to fraud. The New York State Department of Taxation & Finance will be mailing instructions to Long Island homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption between September 16 and October 4 on how to register, along with a STAR code that they will need to register.
