The State University of New York’s Board of Trustees last week approved the recommendation of SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher to appoint Dr. Dolan as Interim President. Most recently, Dr. Dolan was the Superintendent of the Great Neck School District. He has also previously served as Superintendent of the Franklin Square Elementary School District; Assistant Superintendent for Personnel of Manhasset Public Schools; principal of Cold Spring Harbor Junior-Senior High School; and principal of the H. Frank Carey Junior-Senior High School in Franklin Square. Dr. Dolan has also taught at Hofstra University, LIU-C.W. Post and Queens College. He is a board member of the Harry Chapin Foundation and the Cradle of Aviation Museum. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Scholar-Artists Named Six exceptionally talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) have been named by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) as Scholar-Artists for the 2015-2016 school year. These standout students – among only 40 high school seniors chosen from across Long Island – will be featured in Newsday and honored at the Alliance’s annual gala. They are

also eligible for several scholarships to local colleges and universities. Four LIHSA students were named ScholarArtists: dance students Tiffany Canner (Long Beach CSD), Haley Herzog (Locust Valley CSD) and Danna Kimmelman (Bellmore-Merrick CHSD), and theatre student Samantha Weiser (Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD). I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

On September 15th, a flash mob consisting of members from across Long Island performed a dancing welcome home for a Massapequa family who was homeless for almost three years due to super storm Sandy. When the Baillie’s family house was destroyed by the storm, they were forced to move in with friends, family, and had to endure the turmoil of moving in and out of multiple rental homes. To show support

for this loving, caring, family, the community rallied together to make their home coming very special. Their daughter, Nicole, a gifted dancer at A Step Above Performance Arts, help coordinate the details. Ashley Magaddino, a talented, award-winning choreographer from A Sep Above Performing Arts, choreographed the amazing welcome home flash mob dance. The flash mob crew

consisted of over 50 dancers ranging in age from five to sixty-five. The dancers donated many hours of their time working hard to learn the dance and practice the routine. According to Nicole, the flash mob was a heartfelt, emotional surprise for her entire family. After the dance was done, Ms. Baillie was so thankful that she broke down in tears.

The Nassau County Firefighters Museum is helping spread the message, “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm” the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4th10th, 2015. The national fire alarm code requires a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics, half of all U.S. home fire deaths occur at night between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., when people are most likely to be sleeping. Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts in half the risk of dying in a fire. These facts underscore the extreme importance of having working smoke alarms in all bedrooms. “Because fires frequently happen when people are asleep, having

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Thursday, September 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s substance abuse and addiction programs for teens. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Beach Club for a delicious dinner. At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having an adolescent with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidencebased programs for teens.

In addition to providing teen-focused intervention, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicting in the first place. Programs like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parent-present counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping

strategies. These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment (SBIRT) and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidencebased prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and responsible public policy related to addiction. “Our clients are getting younger and younger as the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “The expanding need for services is staggering, and we are grateful that many community members

The Brittney Walsh Memorial

Bradstock Rocks Long Island’s finest musicians and poets, along with thousands of music and beer lovers, converged on Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th to revel in the excitement of Bradstock XXII. Now in its 22nd year, this two-day festival featured hours of live poetry and Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jam funk rock and jazz music performances. A portion of the sales proceeds benefitted the camp. Performers included Cassandra House, Gerry McKeveney, Jerry McDonald, David Amram, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, Funkin’ A, Jelly Band and the Falco Brothers. A special addition to this year’s event was the Flower Power stage, where up-and-coming artists provided additional musical stylings. Linda Ringhouse, owner of The Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport, an original Bradstock organizer who rejoined the staff this year, spearheaded this portion of the festival. On Sunday, guests were also invited to take in the rhymes and slams of the area’s finest and most diverse poets, who performed on the Poetry Stage. All ticketholders were

also given the added opportunity to participate in the 5K Trail Fun Run through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-QuaTuck. All participants were recognized at the Awards Ceremony and received a Bradstock XXII mug. The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing on October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “Since its inception Bradstock has raised over $50,000 for Camp Pa-QuaTuck,” Bridget Costello, Camp Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, said. “The Bradstock organization has continuously updated the venue from electric equipment to paint to campground figures, including a beautiful, 800-pound wooden Phoenix statue that was repurposed from a tree that was lost in Hurricane Sandy. The statue has become an emblem for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and our campers, rising out the ashes to become a great inspiration to us all.” Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is celebrating its 35th Anniversary on October 13th honoring two individuals with long-time connections to the program - State Senator Kemp Hannon and publicist Lyn Dobrin. The event is part of the program’s annual free Celebration of Survivorship at the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom at Adelphi University in Garden City. Doors open at 6 p.m. and speakers begin at 7 p.m. Senator Kemp Hannon is an ardent supporter of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, directing essential funding that allows for support services to all New Yorkers. As a long-time member and current chair of the Senate Health Committee, he has championed significant legislation in all areas of health care, in particular,

women’s health issues. Known for his intellect and ability to grapple with complex issues, Hannon has complemented his health care expertise with constituent advocacy and compassionate public service to all. Lyn Dobrin has served as the public relations consultant for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program since the start in 1980. She is a humanitarian who has brought about social, educational, political and healthcare change through public relations and journalism. When Long Island women started speaking out about breast cancer, Dobrin provided the avenue for their voices to be heard as a driving force in the breast cancer activist movement. Celebration of Survivorship

Fundraiser in Memory of Brittney The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal

is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. Youth Hockey Registration Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Sunday, October 11th (8:00 to 10:00 a.m.), Monday, October 12th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) and Thursday, October 15th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage (in Bethpage Community Park). Ice hockey schedules will be distributed at registration. Youngsters from the ages three to thirteen can take advantage of The Youth Ice Hockey Program to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches. The Youth Ice Hockey Program has received acclaim by the NHL, who have partnered with the Town for a ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative that promotes hockey programming and youth enrichment. Anyone interested in registering for the Youth Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency

(canceled check, utility bill, etc.) and a check or money order (no cash). All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. Registration fees are as follows: Tot Hockey: $200 for one child being registered (plus $150 for each additional child in the same family), and the Youth Hockey Clinic: $275 for one child being registered (plus $225 for each additional child in the same family). Please note, if you are registering a child for the Youth Clinic AND another child or children for the Tot Hockey program, the discounted price will apply to the “Tot Hockey” fee(s). From the Classroom to Costa Rica

“My Spanish teachers in the Massapequa School District taught me that if I didn’t know a word in Spanish, I should work around it by using what I know.” That’s exactly what senior Kate Fahy did when she traveled to Costa Rica for two weeks to participate in various community service projects. Settling in the village of San Jose de Rivas, Kate and a group of 18 teenagers from around the world came together to move large rock piles and level land for construction, build a concession stand for local villagers to sell their goods, and paint and run electricity for an office building through an organized program coordinated by Putney Student Travel. “We slept in sleeping bags on the floor of a community building that had a little kitchen,” Kate explained. “Every day we would wake up at 5:30 a.m. and by 8 a.m. the children would come and

help us. We communicated with them in Spanish and I was surprised that I was able to hold a conversation, although they described my Spanish as ‘understandable,’ and it was amazing to be able to speak the language outside of a classroom setting.” “When we weren’t working, we had time to bond with the villagers,” Kate said. “A couple of women would prepare food and we had a welcoming party. They taught us how to dance to their music. I also had the opportunity to connect with the children through song. I remembered a song I learned in my ninth-grade Spanish class with Mrs. [Amelie] Czekaj called, “Los Pollitos Dicen Pio Pio Pio.” Señora Czekaj filmed us singing and dancing to the song. I began to sing it to some of the younger children and, right away, they started singing it with me and it was such a happy moment to bond this way!”

Kate credits her teachers Czekaj and Ernest Kabelka for inspiring her to become immersed in foreign cultures and for having students speak Spanish in front of the class or translate in front of the class, which she believes helped prepare her for her trip. “This was such an amazing experience; I learned so much; I expanded my vocabulary and feel more confident about my Spanish-speaking abilities,” she said. “I hope to continue taking Spanish classes in college and plan to study abroad to enhance my education.” In addition to Spanish, Kate is in her third year of studying American Sign Language and has traveled to various countries, including Scotland, England, Italy and France, which also has fostered her love for globetrotting and experiencing new cultures.
