“We’re going to talk about doing good deeds,” said Vanessa Canning, a sixthgrade social studies teacher at Berner Middle School, as she addressed her students on the 16th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. In social studies classes throughout the Massapequa School District, teachers led discussions about the events from that day and also focused on the positive moments that occurred after, when people came together to help each other. September 11th has since become known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In that spirit, sixth-graders were asked to fill out “I Will” statements, listing six good deeds they could do in school, at home and in their community. Teachers shared the book, “September 12th: We Knew Everything Would be All Right,” written by a firstgrade class, and showed the video “Hope Was Born on 9/11” about children who were born the day of the attacks. Keeping Students Safe Internet safety is a priority in the Massapequa School District, particularly with ever increasing access to technology, and students at Berner Middle School recently learned what they can do to protect themselves online. As part of their library orientations, new sixthand seventh-graders learned about the online footprints they create and how their social media activity can affect them in the future. Library media specialists Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers cautioned against a “false sense of privacy” and
cited specific posts that have gotten people into trouble. They added that colleges and companies often review social media when considering prospective students or employees. “This is something that we do because we care about the students and we want them to be safe,” Ms. Rogers said. She added that there is an increased emphasis on internet safety because all middle school students in the district now have their own Chromebooks. The librarians reviewed the Responsible Use Policy that the students signed to
use the district’s hardware, software and network. Ms. Martucci-Walsh said that internet safety workshops begin in first grade, and are appropriate for each age. She explained that the lessons in middle school go “a step further” because many students are active users of social media, bloggers and vloggers. Eighth-graders participated in an internet safety workshop called “Yay or Nay?” in which they were given different scenarios regarding social media and debated how those situations should be handled.

New Fields Unveiled As part of the capital construction bond approved by voters in 2014, the athletic fields at Massapequa High School’s main campus were upgrade during the summer. One of the most
noticeable changes is a new track and multipurpose turf field, capable of handling football, soccer and lacrosse games. The sound system was also upgraded. A new turf baseball field
was also installed along with new dugouts. The outfield can be used for soccer and field hockey. Other upgrades to the athletic complex included new tennis courts, fencing and walkways.
A little bit of history in every bite.
The Zorn story began in 1924, when current owner Merrill Zorn’s great grandparents and their children arrived to the United States from Germany. Soon after, they began to open poultry farms, eventually opening 8 on Long Island, and one in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, selling chickens to wholesalers in Queens and the Bronx. At the time the Bethpage area was primarily farmland.

Peter Zorn, who is Merrill’s grandfather, first opened his doors to the public in 1940 with a small retail store and began selling fresh turkeys. Later he added a variety of fresh poultry, farm fresh eggs, sweet whipped butter, baked breads, and other staples his customers were requesting. In 1949, he was the first to offer rotisserie chickens cooked over an open flame. Peter Zorn was truly a pioneer in retail take-out food. He blended his own spices, creating original recipes to expand his menu to include fresh homemade salads, stuffing and gravy to compliment his rotisserie chicken. A short time after, he added his soon to be famous southern fried chicken and barbequed spare ribs. This turned into a thriving take-out business. His menu kept growing as he met his customers’ needs. Before long, he had a complete catering menu designed for the holidays. Eventually, his customers were using his take home catering service all year long. As you would imagine, complete take-out meals and catering were new concepts in the 1950s and became very popular on Long Island. Many tried to imitate this concept, but Zorn’s Poultry Farms was always number one.

Visiting Lecturer Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) boasts some of the most talented and experienced arts educators in the region. In addition to its core faculty of industry experts, LIHSA has a team of 20 Visiting Lecturers, consisting of working professionals in the school’s four basic disciplines - dance, music, theater and film. Among them is Robert Kramer of Massapequa, who teaches theater arts. Robert Kramer is an award-winning director, actor and educator with a tremendous amount of industry experience. As a director, he has staged more than 70 productions at some of this country’s leading regional theaters including Garry Marshall Theater (formerly Falcon Theater) Manhattan Theater Workshop, Buffalo Nights Theater Company, Smithtown Performing Arts Center, Colden Center
and Performer’s Theater. He has served as Assistant Director for Gordon Edelstein at Long Wharf Theater and Manhattan Theater Club. As an actor, Mr. Kramer has held roles in a dozen feature films and as a regular on several television series including HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He has also appeared in plays and musicals at numerous notable venues including the Roundabout Theater, SoHo Playhouse, Theater on VanDam, Actor’s Theater of
Louisville, Classical Stage Company, Playwrights Horizons, Primary Stages, Ensemble Studio Theater, Magnolia Street Café, New York Theater Company and Yale Repertory Theater. Mr. Kramer holds a place in Who’s Who Among America’s Arts Educators and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He was named “Distinguished Teacher of the Arts” by the National Foundation of the Arts and is listed on the National Honor Roll of Outstanding American Arts Teachers.

“Never Forget 9-11-01” sheets to color in patriotic fashion and become part of a paper quilt. Sixth-grade teacher Kira Martelli said the purpose of the day’s lesson was to show students the many heroic actions that took place immediately after the attacks and encourage them to perform their own acts of kindness, whether on a local or on a global scale. Karen Lazar, a docent from the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City, spoke to about
100 eighth-graders. She was one of 25 representatives from the museum who were visiting schools throughout the metropolitan area that day. Ms. Lazar’s presentation included a timeline of the events on September 11th, 2001, accompanied by photos and audio recordings. She shared stories about the heroes of the day, including the “man in the red bandana” who helped direct people to a staircase so they could flee one of the Twin Towers, and the “extraordinarily brave” passengers on Flight 93.
