Sixth grade teacher Robert Kane told his story in finding out about the attacks, explaining how most people remember exactly where they were and what they were doing at the time. He also discussed how people are still affected by the tragedy, and talked about the FealGood Foundation and its support for Sept. 11’s first responders. Massapequa High School social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, in his Advanced Placement government class, also related the attacks to present day. He showed students Jon Stewart’s recent testimony before Congress to extend the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act for those who became sick in the aftermath because of the toxic air, which sparked

her students participate in a See-Think-Wonder exercise, using the iconic photo of firefighters raising the American flag amidst the pile of rubble from the World Trade Center. She asked students to note their observations and make inferences about the photo based on their existing knowledge of that day’s tragic events. She followed by showing a short video, “Hope Was Born on 9/11.” Seventh grade teacher Kimberly Simpson shared online resources through the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, including audio recordings of people recounting their stories from the day. As they were listening, students wrote their feelings on paper footprints to “put themselves in the shoes” of those who witnessed the attacks. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

‘Shed the Meds’ Event Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town, in partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), will be hosting a ‘Shed the Meds’ event at Marjorie Post Park, in Massapequa. The event will be held on Sunday, September 29th and will take place from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m proud that the Town will once again partner with Drug Free LI and the Nassau County Police on this important initiative. It’s critical to ensure medications are properly secured and appropriately discarded to prevent prescription drug abuse. Unfortunately, setting aside the time to properly dispose of old

medications is not usually high on the priority list for most people, and that’s why ‘Shed the Meds’ events are so important. These events provide ample opportunity for safe disposal of unwanted medications. Safe disposal helps protect the environment and keeps medications out of the hands of young children or others who would use them improperly.” In cooperation with Drug Free Long Island, and the Nassau County Police Department, the Town will host this event at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, in the parking lot near the community center. This program is anonymous. Additionally, for those who cannot make it to the event, the Nassau County Police Department would like to remind residents

Ready For An Awesome Year They may only be there for one year, but students entering Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus are looking to make it a memorable one. The incoming ninth graders learned about the many opportunities they will have as they begin their high school careers during orientation. Danielle Kennedy, the executive assistant to the principal, said ninth

grade is an important year because all courses help them fulfill graduation requirements and prepare them for the future. She encouraged students to get involved beyond the school day by taking part in extracurricular activities, which are available at both Ames and the high school’s main campus. “We hope that you will take advantage of all of the opportunities we have

in order to make this an exceptional year,” she said. After a short presentation, students were then allowed to explore the building. With the schedules and maps in hand, they traversed the school to find their classes for the upcoming year. Several teachers were available to greet their future students and help them navigate the halls.

Mr. Koester said that this was “one story of so many” heroes who emerged in the moments after the attacks to help complete strangers. Ninth grade social

studies teachers Nicole Reiss displayed covers of New Yorker magazine from before the attacks, in the months after, and from two years later. Students went around the room and analyzed the images to determine what mood the artist was trying to capture and how those covers reflected the national mentality of the time.

See, Think, Wonder A famous painting by legendary artist Vincent van Gogh was the inspiration for a geography lesson in Kimberly Kelly’s third grade class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students participated in a See, Think, Wonder activity based on the

painting, “Wheatfield With Crows.” Using the thinking routine, children made careful observations and thoughtful interpretations. They identified which of the five themes of geography they felt the painting best represented: place, location, region, movement or human-

environment interaction. Ms. Kelly explained that geography is a major component of the third grade social studies curriculum. She also noted that the skills children develop in a See, Think, Wonder exercise, such as paying attention to details and making inferences, benefit them in all subject areas. “HOMES FOR DOGS” - On September 28-29, 2019, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage on Long Island and Queens, and local shelters, are joining hundreds of Coldwell Banker offices and animal shelters around the country for the Coldwell Banker “Homes for Dogs” National Adoption Weekend.
