The Child Life Program at Good Shepherd Hospice has been awarded a grant from the Starlight Children’s Foundation totaling $2,650. This grant will allow the Child Life Department to purchase pediatric memory making supplies for photo journals, 5 Flip video cameras, 2 photo printers, 10 USB memory sticks and 10 photo and ink kits. This equipment will help with legacy building projects for the young patients and families. The Starlight Foundation of NY*NJ*CT exists to brighten the lives of seriously ill children in the tri-state area. In the 17th year of the Pediatric Hospital Support Program, they have awarded nearly $12,500,000 to eightyseven hospitals. Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined
forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is
incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. So please join for what will surely be another monumental event to support this inspirational family in their time of need. Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the
winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.
So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all... Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. Gianna Raimi, a dance major at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), from the Massapequa UFSD, was recently named a ScholarArtist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing artist and for superior academic achievement. Gianna’s love of dance can be traced back to her childhood, when she first started dancing in The Nutcracker. She has performed it every year since, even in the coveted role of the Sugar Plumb Fairy. This might explain Gianna’s preference for ballet. Or it might be her competitive nature. “I like the discipline of ballet,” she says. “You have to strive for perfection.” While she hopes to join a professional ballet company one day, she has explored a number of other forms of dance. “Dance has exposed me to the amazing talent in the world,” she says. “This is such a huge honor,” Gianna says of being named a ScholarArtist. “I’m in extremely talented company.” Beyond the personal accomplishment, the young dancer likes the exposure the award gives to the arts. “It’s fitting for the arts to be acknowledged in this way,” she says. Dance teacher Janice Aguilera describes Gianna as “a ray of sunshine.” Perhaps that’s because of her positive attitude. “She’s always looking to improve,” Aguilera says. “She’s a pleasure to teach.” As a dancer, Gianna has the spirit and perseverance to make it. “She really wants this,” Aguilera says. “I have no doubt she’ll be a success.” “We recognize that you are dedicated to your art and a very valuable asset to your school district,” Scholar-Artist Committee Chairperson John J. Gallagher wrote in a letter to Taylor. “We commend you for your hard work, excellent scholarship and accomplishments.”

I’m often asked by people what changes they should make when they embark on a quest to “greening their home or work place” to either save on power bills or to help the environment. This question becomes tougher to answer when posed by someone on a tight budget. Let’s face it, those that can least afford today’s rising power bills need to make energysaving changes the most. The question is logical yet hard to answer, especially when we are so readily bombarded by advertising and press articles about the virtues of going green, buying solar panels to create power and using Green Wise, Energy Star or Green-Certified Products. So what does it all mean? In reality, not everyone is able to place five or six kilowatts of solar panels on their roof due to the building’s orientation, or if one lives in an apartment, for example. However, for home and business owners, incentive programs from LIPA, the state and federally-provided rebates and tax credits of up to 55% can all but cover 70-80% of the cost of Green Product
purchases! So, nowadays, solar power, solar water heating and windspires are definitely worth looking into. And once purchased, the owners never need to worry about rising energy prices again. However, what can you do if you rent your home or business space, or live in an apartment, where solar power panels are not a practical solution? The Short answer is this: Start Small “Look after the pennies, and the dollars will follow.” So let’s start with the lowhanging GREEN fruit, and go for the green changes that can be simply made. Some of these changes can even be applied by those renting. 1. Switch electrical items off at the power board, or unplug them altogether, to reduce “vampire power drain.” Just like vampires leach blood, appliances that are left plugged in can drain as much in power per annum in stand-by mode as the actual device uses when it is activated. Culprits include: phone chargers, clothes washers, tumble dryers, VCRs/DVDs and computers. As an example, an average microwave is used for less than 10 minutes per day, but vampire stand-by power uses 23 hours, 50 minutes each day. Solution: Unplug or use power boards. This alone can save an average household up to $112 a year - even

Coschignano announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Saturday, October 5th (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), and Wednesday, October 9th (6 to 9:00 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Following those dates, registration will continue in the Recreation office at Town Hall South, located at 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, New York 11758, from October 10th through 31st from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “The Youth Ice Hockey Program provides youngsters, ages three to 13, with the opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches,” Councilman Coschignano stated. “The highly regarded program has earned it recognition by the NHL, which has partnered with the Town to promote hockey programming and youth enrichment through its ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative.” Additionally this season,
the program welcomes back former New York Ranger and Long Island Duck’s Eastern Hockey League legend Buzz Deschamps, who has joined our staff and will help oversee the on-ice program and its coaches. The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Fire Prevention Open House on Friday Night, October 11th at its headquarters, 1000 Broadway, from 7 to 9 p.m. The 39th Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 27th. The Children’s RagA-Muffin Costume Parade will start at 12 noon at the corner of North Nassau Avenue, process north on Broadway and conclude behind Fire Department Headquarters. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered so they will be eligible for free prizes. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Robert J. GRACE GOES TO SPACE - Grace Day School Students Grades K-8, had an exciting trip to Nassau County’s Cradle of Aviation Museum. Enjoying over 75 air and spacecrafts in 8 exhibit galleries, they toured the museum learning about the history of flight from Roosevelt Field starting out as a small airport to what went wrong on Apollo 13. The students learned about astronaut life in zero gravity and negative effects on the body when experiencing weightlessness for any length of time. After seeing astronaut food, wearing on a real spacesuit and touching over 30 hand-on exhibits, they all enjoyed lunch in The Red Planet, a futuristic mars space station, circa 2040.

Tax Collection Closed Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich notifies Town residents that the 2013 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $503,854,974.86 was to
be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $9,292.37 (0.002%). Nassau County was paid $255,839,256.87 (51%) from the collection. The Town of Oyster Bay was paid $86,113,208.68
(17%), and the special tax districts were paid $152,680,645.33 (30%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $9,212,571.61 (2%). Receiver Stefanich noted that property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted
by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office. Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees. The 2013-2014 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver
Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property
