State Parks will stock South and McDonald Ponds in Hempstead Lake State Park with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. DEC also stocks several water bodies in Nassau and Suffolk counties including: Upper Twin Pond, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Reservoir and 12 other Suffolk County lakes with brown trout. These stockings will occur by

No fishing license is required for this event. Additionally, this year there will be no admission fee and parking is free. Festival activities begin at 10 a.m. and offers flyfishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services. Additionally, a display area will be set up by Trout Unlimited, DEC Environmental Education, State Parks as well as other fishing and environmental organizations. Children’s activities will also begin at 10 a.m. and will include pumpkin decorating, a magic show, pony rides and face painting. A casting contest where participants can catch a pumpkin or “hook” a prize will be held by the Knights of Columbus of Seaford. Scully announced today. DEC’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are sponsoring the event along with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks). “The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great sport of freshwater fishing,” Scully said. “As part of Governor Cuomo’s NY is Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, the festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of children’s activities to provide a rewarding family experience.”

This fall, the Town of Oyster Bay is offering a Toddler’s Arts &Crafts program for residents and their children at two Town facilities, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. The programs serve as a great bonding experience between parents and children, also helping to develop a child’s sense of creativity. “The arts and crafts program is a wonderful opportunity for your child to be introduced to art while, at the same time, providing a great chance to spend quality time with your child,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Toddlers can enjoy a fun-filled class of arts and crafts that will help enhance your child’s creative mind and skills.” Registration for the Toddler Arts & Crafts program will take place beginning Monday,

September 22nd at the Town of Oyster Parks Department recreation office, Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Rd, Massapequa) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please bear in mind that space is limited. All applicants must provide a tax bill and/or utility bill to validate proof of residency along with a birth certificate. The Arts & Crafts program is meant for two, three, or four year old boys and girls and is open to Town of Oyster Bay residents only. There is a $20 application fee for each child. The Toddler Arts & Crafts program runs from October 21st to December 23rd and will be held at either the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room (located in Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue) or the Marjorie R. Post Park Community Room (Unqua

and Merrick Roads, Massapequa). Parents will choose one class per week, per child. Classes for each week include Tuesdays at Marjorie Post at 10 a.m. (two-year olds only) or 11 a.m. (Ages 3 and 4), Wednesdays at TOB Ice Skating Center at 10 a.m. (two year olds only) or 11 a.m. (Ages 3 and 4), or Thursdays at TOB Ice Skating Center (Bethpage) at 10 a.m.(two year olds only) or 11 a.m. (Ages 3 and 4). “Residents and their children are sure to find these programs enjoyable,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “As is always the case, a parent or guardian must be present for the entire class.” For more information, contact the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks, Recreation 516.797.4125.

Youth Ice Hockey Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Monday, October 6th (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.), and Wednesday, October 8th (6 p.m. to 9p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. “The Youth Ice Hockey Program provides youngsters, ages three to 13, with the opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches,” Councilman Pinto stated. “The highly regarded program has earned it recognition by the NHL, which has partnered with the Town to promote hockey programming and youth enrichment through its ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative.” Registrants must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town

of Oyster Bay residency (canceled check, utility bill, etc.) and a check or money order (no cash). All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Fire Prevention Open House on Friday Night October 10th at its headquarters, 1000 Broadway, from 7 to 9 p.m. The 40th Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 26th. The Children’s RagA-Muffin Costume Parade will start at 12 noon at the corner of North Nassau Avenue, process north on Broadway and conclude behind Fire Department Headquarters. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered so they will be eligible for free prizes. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Kevin B. Mauro. “Over the last four decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people. Our department

is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin parade.” The event is always held near Halloween, which provides some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Mauro said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the award ceremony.” Registration will be held on Friday, October 10th from 7 to 9 p.m. during Fire prevention Open House at Fire Department headquarters and Sunday, September 28th at the Fire Department Booth at the Annual Columbus Lodge #2143 Italian Feast and Festival (Rain Date: SUNDAY October 5th

2014). Late registration will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 26th at the start of the parade, North Nassau Avenue and North Broadway.
