Pomeroy Foundation under their Historic Signage Grant Program, which has provided over 600 historic markers throughout New York State since 2006, spanning the time frame of 1740-1920. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Since the founding of the Town of Oyster Bay in 1653, Oyster Bay hamlet and the surrounding harbor have played an important role in history, and an important role in the development of trade and commerce in New York State. Originally built in Glenwood Landing in 1883, The Christeen is an amazing and historical vessel that has served a number of roles over the years, from oyster sloop

to cargo carrier. Its story of survival is an incredible one, and I am proud to dedicate this historical marker today to bring more attention to this incredible vessel.” Originally built in 1883 in Glenwood Landing for harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor, over her 125 years the Christeen survived 16 major hurricanes, numerous nor’easters, two sinkings, and severe neglect to be fully restored by master shipwrights from the Christeen Oyster Sloop Restoration Foundation. Upon her completion and relaunch in 1999, the Christeen was gifted to the Waterfront Center where she now serves as a floating classroom educating passengers about maritime history, marine science, coastal ecology, the oyster industry, and aquaculture.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Lastly, if you would like to volunteer, you can! The right tool for the job is essential to working safely and efficiently. This is as true in the workplace as it is in the garden. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin in regards to which tools they need. The following are eight items that can serve as a solid foundation for beginning gardeners.

Massapequa High School seniors Brendan Deneen and Devin DiMascio have been named semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among 16,000 students nationwide who earned the distinction based on their performance on last fall’s PSAT. Brendan and Devin have challenged themselves academically in taking numerous Advanced Placement courses, and they noted that the level of

difficulty and accelerated pace of these classes has instilled in them an even greater work ethic. As both students begin the college application process, they hope the distinction of National Merit semifinalist will help them get into prestigious colleges. Devin wants to attend a school in the Northeast with a strong pre-medicine program, as she aspires to become a neurologist. As a member of the Health Care

Explorers club, she has had the opportunity to visit different medical facilities in the region. Brendan wants to turn his interest in math and problem solving into a career in computer programming or software engineering. He said is looking at colleges that have strong programs in those areas. To become finalists, Brendan and Devin must complete a detailed scholarship application

with information about their academic record, participation in school activities and community service, leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received, in addition to writing an essay and receiving a recommendation from a high school official. Finalists will then vie for approximately 7,600 National Merit scholarships, which will be awarded in the spring.

That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie, but just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of

several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Shrimpy’s Burrito Bar is a beach-themed, California style restaurant right here on Long Island. Locals Ryan DiPaola, John Nasta Jr. and Thomas Soluri Jr. developed the concept of this unique Burrito Bar and opened their first location at 125 Front Street Unit 1-A in Massapequa Park in 2018. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents to take part in Fall Co-Ed Recreational Programs for badminton, beginning the first week of October 2020 at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Registration for this program is ongoing at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Imbroto stated, “To protect your

health, extra precautions and safety protocols have been put in place to make sure that this exciting Badminton program can return safely and provide our residents with a great outlet for physical fitness.” Badminton will feature two sessions available for registrants to choose from. Session 1 will be held Tuesdays from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Fridays from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and

Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Session 2 will be held Tuesdays from 9:45 pm to 10:30 pm, Fridays 9:45 pm to 10:30pm, and Sundays, 8:00 pm to 8:45 pm. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and will be held for residents only. Each session costs $75, with the program scheduled to begin on October 4th, 2020. Proof of residency is required and the schedule is subject to change. Due to

In the Town of Oyster Bay, once a dog reaches four months of age, the owner is required by Town Code to obtain a dog license and verification tag. Licenses are valid for one year. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “With the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic over the last 6 months, there have been reports of large increases in the adoption rates of pets for companionship, especially dogs. If you have recently adopted a dog, now is the time to license it to ensure its safety and identification in case it gets lost! Each year, hundreds of beloved family dogs are lost because these animals do not have identification tags and cannot be identified and returned to their owners. A dog license allows everyone to know your dog has a home, and also signals that your dog is up-to-date on its rabies shot. To put it simply: if you love your dog, license it! A home insulation project certainly doesn’t offer the wow factor of a kitchen remodel, but insulation serves a vital function in the house that helps keep people comfortable and reduces energy consumption. Insulation is typically placed in areas where air escapes, such as between the stud cavities inside the walls and in the attic, and serves to slow and reduce heat transfer. The U.S. Department of Energy says between 50 and 70 percent of the energy used in homes is for heating and cooling.
