As of September 14th, nearly 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance claims. “FEMA remains committed to making sure that every policyholder gets every dollar they are owed under their flood insurance policy. Already, thousands of policyholders have contacted us to have their claims reviewed and

we have begun providing funds to those who were due additional payments on their claim,” Wright said. “We are hopeful that HUD’s action to provide relief to the vast majority of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits will encourage even more policyholders who may have been initially reluctant to enter the process to do so,” Wright said. “In light of HUD’s decision to simplify this review and provide relief, we are extending the claims review deadline until October 15th. We hope by extending the deadline we are addressing any remaining concerns some may have about entering the claims review process. The review process we have established is designed to be simple, fair, and accessible without paid legal assistance. FEMA is dead set on restoring trust in this important program and no one should be

Awardees may use the scholarship to pay off outstanding u n d e r g r a d u a t e educational costs at their current institutions, or to finance additional degrees, professional certifications, and continuing education programs. “UNCF is honored to

carry on the name and legacy of a prestigious program which began at a time in our nation where earning a college degree was a social and financial challenge for many African Americans,” said Dr. Michael L. NMSC is proud to partner with UNCF, the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, to establish the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. For more than 70 years, UNCF has worked to get students to and through college, and awards more than $100 million in scholarships annually. This program will further expand UNCF’s reach to AfricanAmerican students across the country who will benefit from the honor, recognition, and financial assistance accompanying these awards.

In the half century since the National Achievement Scholarship Program was created, more than four million Black Americans have entered the program, and approximately 228,000 have received program recognition. Of those honored, more than 34,000 of the most outstanding participants were chosen to receive Achievement Scholarship® awards worth about $108 million. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise

has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.

‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President Robert McConville.

Fall Classes for Seniors Are you looking to get the most out of you iPad or Tablet? Then now is the perfect time to take advantage of SeniorNet classes being held just for seniors in the Town of Oyster Bay! Registration for these informative classes begins September 29th at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center located on 28 W. Carl St., Hicksville. All classes are held at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto announced. Volunteer instructors and coaches make learning

fun while helping seniors unlock the power of their iPad or tablet. Computer classes for beginners are also offered for those who want to learn computer basics on a desktop or laptop computer. Whether you’re sending emails to grandchildren, chatting with friends in other states or shopping online, there is much fun to be had by learning the full potential of your iPad or Tablet. The schedule for SeniorNet classes in the Fall include “Intro to the iPad” held on September 30th, October 7th, and October 14th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., “How

to Use Your Tablet” held on September 29th and October 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., “There’s an App For That” held on September 29th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and “Computers for Beginners” held on October 13th and 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be a small fee for materials. Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fall Adult CoEd Badminton and Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Programs, Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone announced. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The badminton program begins Sunday, October 4th and will be conducted on Thursdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Sundays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The volleyball program begins Tuesday, October 6th and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30

p.m., and Saturdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount. In addition to being fun, badminton and volleyball provide excellent forms of aerobic exercise that improve your health and even add extra years to your life. This fall marks a great opportunity for residents to take advantage of these terrific programs. Registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on Tuesday, September 15th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.,

Thursday, September 17th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, September 19th from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. Following these dates, registration will continue based on availability. Please note that the schedule may be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. Residents should sign up for these co-ed activities not only for the positive health benefits, but for the social aspect as well. Fall Program Registration

Rotational Arts Program Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division, is seeking submissions for its 42nd Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. This program allows local artists to display their work in libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis. This is the perfect chance for residents to bring their artistic talents to use in the community.

Novice and experienced artists are encouraged to enter a preview on Sunday, November 1st. The work is judged for acceptability into this program by professional artists and teachers. Awards will be presented at a later date in the fields of photography, brush work and other media. The Town invites local businesses to join in supporting these local artists. The Rotational Arts Exhibit Program provides emerging and mid-career artists with a chance to see their artwork exhibited throughout

the Town of Oyster Bay. Business owners have the opportunity to support local artists, in addition to offering their patrons the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t. This program is free to both artists and businesses. The application deadline for artists to enter the preview is October 1st. Scouts Honor

Massapequa’s Boy Scouts Troop 660 joined Massapequa’s Cub Scout Pack 696 to honor 9/11 victims by planting flags on the lawn at Massapequa Village Hall in Massapequa Park earlier this week. Scouts very carefully

lined up the flags using string in neat rows on the lawn of Massapequa’s Village Hall. “The boys understand the significance of paying tribute to those who lost their lives. Working in the heat for a few hours

is worth the effort to remember those victims”, commented one parent. The flags will be removed over the weekend by the scouts. Massapequa applauds both groups of scouts for their efforts.

MUSTANGS OPENING DAY - The Massapequa Mustangs Opening Day Parade was recently held at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. Supervisor Venditto and the Town Officials were joined by New York Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, Senator Michael Venditto and the 1971 & 1972 Massapequa Mustangs Champions for an enjoyable Opening Day Parade that marks the start of a OPENING DAY - Saturday, September 12th was Opening Day for Massapequa Mustangs Football. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. That’s why New York State and Nassau University Medical Center are joining forces with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the Falls Free® Coalition to celebrate Falls Prevention Awareness Day on September 23rd, 2015 – the first day of Fall. “While falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury for people 65 years of age and older, they are not an inevitable part of aging. This year’s Fall Prevention

Awareness Day theme, Take a Stand to Prevent Falls, seeks to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injury among older adults,” stated Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the CDC, in the United States, there were 2.5 million older adult falls in 2013, resulting in 734,000 of these patients being hospitalized, and $34 billion in medical costs (adjusted for inflation). “We can change this by bringing greater attention to the many preventive

measures that can be easily employed to keep our seniors safe.” Studies show that a combination of behavior changes can significantly reduce falls among older adults. Experts recommend: • Participating in a physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility components. • Consulting with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment. • Having medications
