Music For Life Fundraiser in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team
Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries,
one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured
mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. I’m often asked by people what changes they should make when they embark on a quest to “greening their home or work place” to either save on power bills or to help the environment. This question becomes tougher to answer when posed by someone on a tight budget. Let’s face it, those that can least afford today’s rising power bills need to make energysaving changes the most. The question is logical yet hard to answer, especially when we are so readily bombarded by advertising and press articles about the virtues of going green, buying solar panels to create power and using Green Wise, Energy Star or Green-Certified Products. So what does it all mean? In reality, not everyone is able to place five or six kilowatts of solar panels on their roof due to the building’s orientation, or if one lives in an apartment, for example. However, for home and business owners, incentive programs from LIPA, the state and federally-provided rebates and tax credits of up to 55% can all but cover 70-80% of the cost of Green Product
purchases! So, nowadays, solar power, solar water heating and windspires are definitely worth looking into. And once purchased, the owners never need to worry about rising energy prices again. However, what can you do if you rent your home or business space, or live in an apartment, where solar power panels are not a practical solution? The Short answer is this: Start Small “Look after the pennies, and the dollars will follow.” So let’s start with the lowhanging GREEN fruit, and go for the green changes that can be simply made. Some of these changes can even be applied by those renting. 1. Switch electrical items off at the power board, or unplug them altogether, to reduce “vampire power drain.” Just like vampires leach blood, appliances that are left plugged in can drain as much in power per annum in stand-by mode as the actual device uses when it is activated. Culprits include: phone chargers, clothes washers, tumble dryers, VCRs/DVDs and computers. As an example, an average microwave is used for less than 10 minutes per day, but vampire stand-by power uses 23 hours, 50 minutes each day. Solution: Unplug or use power boards. This alone can save an average household up to $112 a year - even

incentives are on offer here as well, so it is worth looking into.) The savings made on heating and cooling bills will often repay the outlay within a year or two. Simply put, a Green Makeover can be as small or large as you wish it to be. The key points to remember are: A) Taking some green steps, no matter how small, is better than taking none at all. Think about it - if an average household changes out between 20 and 40, 100W incandescent bulbs for 10–30W LEDs, lighting bills can be cut by around 70%. The Energy Star website says that, by changing just five bulbs, you can save $200 or more over the lifetime of the bulbs. 3. Fit Skylights. These are great for businesses, as a few modern tubular skylights can easily halve a lighting bill. At home, kitchens, laundries, studies, robes and all dark areas can benefit from the natural light brought in by skylights. Well-lit buildings not only save energy and money, but also appear larger, more inviting, and are great home improvement options. 4. Insulate. If your building is not already insulated, or if you have less than R38 insulation (12 inches thick), it is time to upgrade. Extra batts can easily be fitted over the top of existing ceiling insulation, or spray foam can be retro-fitted in some cases. (Rebates and

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson announced that the Town will host its Sixth Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 22nd, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. Today, one in 88 individuals is diagnosed with autism. Only a few short years ago, the rate of diagnosis was one in 150, and this staggering statistic makes it the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States,”

If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Our clients benefit greatly from massage therapy for symptom control as well as for emotional and spiritual comfort. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division, is seeking submissions for its 40th Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. This program allows local artists to display their work at new venues in libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on
a monthly or bi-monthly basis. “Both novice and experienced artists are encouraged to enter a preview on Sunday, November 3rd,” Councilman Muscarella said. “The work is judged for acceptability into this program by professional artists and teachers.” The Town invites local businesses to join in supporting these local artists. “Each business
selects the artists for their facility at the Artists Showcase on November 14th,” Councilman Muscarella explained. “This gives local businesses the unique opportunity to both support local artists, in addition to offering their patrons the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t.” This program is free to both artists and businesses.

Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day. In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention
for a Wild Card berth. That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch. The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next. And the one after that. Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.) In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

The museum is especially interested in hearing from individuals with merchandising experience to help run the Museum Store. Volunteers who are available to work on weekends are also particularly sought. Among the other opportunities for volunteers are greeting visitors as they enter the main museum building (the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art Building), providing membership
material and assistance to museum visitors, and working with the museum staff providing general office support. Whether in positions that have them working with the public or assignments where they assist museum staff members, the museum’s volunteers are an invaluable component of the Museum Family. What is required for all of these volunteer assignments is enthusiasm for museum work, willingness to learn, and the wish to become a meaningful part of the

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree. Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak
with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property. Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees. • Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one
another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs. • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. • Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.
• Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning. • Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who

For the fifth year in a row, Nassau BOCES has been awarded funds to help school districts improve their records management. This year’s $150,000 grant from New York State will go towards projects for the Baldwin, Elmont, Hempstead, Long Beach, Syosset and Valley Stream school districts. Thanks to this project, many of these school districts’ records will be scanned and saved in a secure Web-based environment featuring direct online access. “This project is extremely important and timely given the damage to district documents caused by Superstorm Sandy last year,” said Paul Duignan, senior manager in the Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. In addition to safeguarding these materials during emergency situations, the document imaging process provides school district personnel with quick access to vital information.
