There will also be photo opportunities with several beauty queens including Ms. New York Senior America 2014, Jane Rubenstein, and Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner. Altruistic attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food and cash donations for the Interfaith Nutrition

More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. Every day, more than 160,000 children nationwide stay home from school to avoid being bullied. Not only are the effects of bullying on a child felt immediately, but they can also be lifelong – or even tragic. That’s why CAPS is inviting the community to support CAPS at its 2nd Annual Stand Up, Don’t Stand By 5K Walk/Run to End Bullying on October 5th, as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. Check-in starts at 8 a.m. at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park; the race and walk will follow at 9 a.m. A Kiddie Fun Run for children under 8 is scheduled for 8:45. The entry fee is $25 per person, $40 for family (up to 4 participants). Arrive before 8 AM for free parking. Participants who are pre-registered by September 26th will receive a complimentary T-shirt. Pre-registered
families will receive two t-shirts. Walkers, runners, families, schools and corporate teams are invited to participate. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Nassau BOCES announces it has received a grant of $131,098 from New York State. The award will be used to help component school districts to safeguard their documents. Nassau BOCES and five component school districts will share the award: East Meadow UFSD, Great Neck UFSD, Plainedge UFSD, Syosset CSD and Uniondale UFSD. The Town’s popular Fall fitness programs are returning this autumn for residents seeking to stay maintain or improve their levels of fitness heading into the cooler months, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. The Fall fitness classes will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center “These fitness programs are for individuals 18 years of age or older who want to increase flexibility, tone muscles and build strength,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Participants will be introduced to Zumba, yoga, and cardio kickboxing. The session will be carefully tailored to the physical condition of the individual and systematically scheduled to gain the best results.” Registration for the Fall Fitness programs will take place at the Town
of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23rd and Thursday September 25th, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday September 27th. After these dates, registration will continue at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, based on availability. Each twelve week program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Zumba classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays (starting October 6th), and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays (starting October 1st). The yoga classes will be held on Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. (starting October 4th) and Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. (starting October 7th).The cardio kickboxing classes will be held on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. beginning on October 6th. “Our residents have really

Crunched By Tech By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was
payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care
what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

These documents have historically been kept in boxes in basements or costly storage facilities and have to manually be shredded when the time comes to destroy them. The transition from paper to 21st Century state-ofthe-art technology will allow districts to save costs while being more efficient and saving time. The Shared Services Document Imaging Grant allows for the expansion of the Nassau BOCES Document Imaging Service, which includes the scanning and digitizing of hard copy school records, as well as the conversion of microfilmed records to digital format. Digitizing and storing component school district records at Nassau BOCES provides online record access and removes exposure to damage from unexpected events.

In addition, children can watch shows and animal activities that are offered every day. Nassau BOCES has procured a $300,000 grant to help eight local school districts reevaluate their current assessments. The “Teaching is the Core” grant funds a yearlong initiative for 2014-2015 that includes scientific analysis, strategic planning and professional development. As part of the grant, Nassau BOCES will use a longitudinal study aimed at reducing or eliminating unnecessary pre-assessments. The agency will work closely with each district, conducting a comprehensive review of assessment and strategies, with the goal of determining which local assessments best serve the district’s instructional goals, supporting the use of high-quality assessments and eliminating assessments where possible. An essential tool to achieving this goal is professional development. To that end, Nassau BOCES will hold seven professional development days throughout the school year, for a minimum of 32 educators per session (including both teachers and administrators). Educators will evaluate the various types of assessment in use, determine their effectiveness and value, and refine the assessments to better measure student performance. Assessments will be reviewed to ensure they meet the rigorous requirements of the Common Core Learning Standards, as well as fundamental educational benchmarks, such as

This training at Stony Brook is a big step to doing that for our communities right here on Long Island.”

On August 30th-31st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck hosted Bradstock XXI, a two-day music festival featuring live music from the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. A singer/songwriter stage entertained the attendees with 30 acoustic acts and, on Sunday, 14 poets read from their works on the Poetry Porch. Approximately 750 people attended the event. It was the fourth consecutive year that the camp hosted Bradstock. Part of the ticket sales will go to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck. Over the past four years, Bradstock has raised over $30,000 for the camp. Among the bands who performed included Cassandra House, Gerry McKevney, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to
Dayton, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, David Amram, Funkin’A, Jelly Band, Falco Brothers and The Electrix. All of the musicians and poets donated their time, energy and talent to the festival in support of the various not-for-profits that benefit from Bradstock. The event was formed by The Circle of Chiefs. What began as a simple jam session in the backyard of Brad Ringhouse, a Bayport resident, became an all-day music festival. All of the many workers who spend countless hours organizing and running the event are volunteers. Bradstock has called five locations home over the past 21 years but feels strongly that Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is by far the best venue. The Bradstock motto is, “A good time for a good cause.” Helping the Camp achieve its mission of “Summer is
for everyone” has truly energized all of Bradstock’s workers and attendees. The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing in October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special
needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.
