Jeremiah F. Anglim, longtime resident of Amityville, died September 2, 2020 at the home of his son in Massapequa. He was 88 years old. Jerry was born January 13, 1932 in Brooklyn to Francis Aloysius and Anne Elizabeth (Mehegan) Anglim. Mr. Anglim joined the United States Marine Corps in February 1952, later transferring to Reserves and subsequently retiring as a Captain. Jerry joined the ranks of the NY Police Department in 1956, served until 1977 when he retired. He was a 53 year member of the Massapequa Fire Department, an ex-captain of

Engine Co. #4. He was predeceased by his wife Ann in June 2017 and also his sons Frank and Paul. Survivors include his children Kristine Cantrell, Celeste Kusmierski (Walter), Nancy Burnham (Joel), Peter Anglim (Diane); seventeen (17) grandchildren, twentyone (21) great grandchildren and two (2) great great grandchildren, and a sister Francis Franzo. He was also predeceased by four (4) brothers and three (3) sisters. Deacon Rich Ferri conducted a prayer service on the evening of Tuesday, September 8th. Father Gerard Gordon, pastor

St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin’s assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed with military honors in St. Charles Cemetery. Fire Dept. conducted Last Alarm and members of both the Fired Dept. and NYPD acted as escorts and honor guard. Donations in memory of Jerry may be made to St. Martin of Tours Parish Outreach. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Lastly, if you would like to volunteer, you can! WIBCC relies on the generous support of volunteers in order to fulfill their mission. They are always looking for people to help with programs, raising funds and other tasks. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board invite residents to participate in the Fall Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup, scheduled to take place between 8am and 11am on Saturday, October 3rd. This environmental cleanup is co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay, Friends of the Bay and the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association. “We are asking volunteers to roll up their sleeves and work at a socially-acceptable distance with our employees to rid local beaches and shorelines of debris,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels.

Volunteers will help us cleanup local waterways, protect our marine life and beautify the shoreline by removing this litter and preserving our local suburban quality of life. Join us on Saturday, October 3rd and help make a difference!” This environmental initiative provides residents an opportunity to spend a day working to make a difference, as debris that has washed ashore and accumulated over time will be collected and discarded properly throughout the day. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves with them and meet at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo located off of Larrabee Avenue in

Raynham Hall Offers Virtual Field Trips

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will continue to offer ‘virtual field trips’ for classes for many schools in the area to continue to highlight the stories of resiliency during the Revolutionary War from Robert Townsend and his compatriots as members of George Washington’s spy ring. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Raynham Hall Museum has presented more than

100 virtual programs, and reached over 3,000 students across Long Island. Supervisor Saladino said, “Oyster Bay Hamlet’s history is chock full of historical importance that many of our younger residents may not be aware of, and that is why I am so delighted to see that Raynham Hall Museum has found a creative solution in virtual field trips to still be able to fulfill their important mission to preserve our history and educate our children on

the past. Virtual field trips will be held throughout the school year and will serve as an important educational supplement as faculty and students alike adapt to the ‘new normal’ we all find ourselves in!” Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay is currently offering virtual field trips for $4 per student for each program, with no more than 2 classes per virtual program. Virtual field trips have become a proven commodity to help ease educators burden coping

with new distance learning options. The program is available to libraries as well, and is designed for youngsters from grades 2-11. The programs available at present are as follow: • The Townsends in the Revolution (4th and 5th graders, 1 hour long) • Spy Craft (4th-7th graders, 1 hour long OR an expanded version told in 5 sessions, 1 hour each) • Standing Where They Stood: Learning About

5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement

1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the ﬂue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup.
