called Wonders for grades 2-5 and the expansion of the online instructional program, Compass Learning, into all second- and third-grade classrooms. The program uses the results of the computerized NWEA assessment — which provides real-time information about students’ strengths and weaknesses in reading and math — and through various individualized, instructional-rich exercises completed at an individualized pace, students work on strengthening and enhancing their academic skills. The program was piloted in third-grade classrooms at East Lake Elementary School and in math support classes at Berner Middle School. East Lake students will continue to use the program in fourth grade. Marking the second year of the district’s “Learning…Anytime, Anywhere” initiative, the number of students issued Chromebooks as a primary instructional device has expanded from the middle school level to middle school and freshmen at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. Among the district’s technology upgrades are new teacher workstations in classrooms, reimaged instructional computers, whiteboard installations and the rollout of Microsoft Office 2013 districtwide. Improvements to buildings and grounds, such as roof repairs, were made possible through the $37.5 million bond issue that was passed by voters last October. Additional upgrades are forthcoming as permits and approvals are secured. Massapequa, like all districts across the

ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE - Members of Venturing Crew 130 spent a week on an Adirondack adventure this summer. The trek included three days canoeing and camping on Long Lake, hiking, riding special bikes made for old train tracks (only place in the USA to do this), museums and other adventures with trained adult support. Some wildlife sightings included bald eagles, deer, frogs and egrets. There were no bear sightings! Venturing Crew 130 is a co-ed scouting unit for ages 13 to 21.

The Seatuck Environmental Association (Seatuck) has documented juvenile alewife in Massapequa Creek. It is the first time youngof-the-year fish have been found in the creek. Their presence is clear evidence that alewives are successfully spawning in the freshwater portion of the tributary, likely for the first time since the creek was impounded more than 175 years ago. Alewives are a species of river herring, marine fish that spend most of their lives in the ocean, but that migrate (like salmon) into freshwater tributaries to spawn. At one time every river and stream on Long Island hosted an earlyspring “run” of alewives. The millions of foot-long fish that migrated into the region’s estuaries and tributaries were a boon to a wide range of predatory species, including

everything from bluefish and stripped bass to osprey and seals. However, the construction of dams and roadways impounded most of the region’s tributaries and destroyed alewives’ access to upstream spawning habitat. In 2010, the County of Nassau, with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s

Restoration Center, US Fish & Wildlife Service and NY Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC), installed a fish ladder in the spillway at Massapequa Lake. It provided permanent up-stream access to freshwater portions of the tributary for the first time

since the dam’s original construction in 1837. In 2012, Seatuck and the NYDEC stocked 300 wild alewives into Massapequa Creek to help jump-start the restoration. While adult alewives have been documented returning to the creek each of the past few years, the presence of young-of-the-year fish is the first definitive evidence that they are successfully spawning upstream of the fish ladder. The juvenile fish Seatuck netted and filmed hatched in early April, likely right in Massapequa Lake. They are in the process of moving out of the tributary and into the Great South Bay. Eventually they will make their way out to the ocean. After reaching maturity

It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

Drug Awareness Program In an ongoing effort to educate parents and students about the latest trends and dangers of substance abuse, the Massapequa School District is highlighting drug awareness resources during Back-to-School night at each of its nine schools. Each parent will receive a detailed guide, “A Parent’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use” published by the Massapequa Kiwanis Club, filled with a host of information from “The Adolescent Brain” to the “Signs and Symptoms…. Communication” to “The Legal Consequences.” Parents can also

download the “Drug Guide for Parents” app for free. Kiwanis’ message will be infused into other school presentations throughout the school year, such as the district’s mandatory Parent/Athlete meetings to reinforce the importance of substance abuse prevention. “We want parents to walk out of their child’s school armed with the information they need to keep their children safe, and to have the knowledge they need to start the conversation, or even detect a problem, and be able to find the right resources,” said Dr. Thomas Fasano, assistant to the superintendent

for curriculum and instruction. “This problem keeps growing… we hear on the news almost every day a new, cheap, easy-to-obtain synthetic drug or even prescription drugs, that are wreaking havoc in our communities. Parents and the entire school community need to partner together.” On September 24th, all Berner Middle School students will attend a substance abuse education awareness program called “Opiate Evolution to the Perfect Storm,” presented by Nassau County Detective Pamela Stark, and sponsored by Senator

Michael Venditto, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the Massapequa School District. Berner parents are also encouraged to attend Detective Stark’s presentation at 12:30 p.m. in the Berner auditorium. Participants will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of drug abuse, the tools needed to battle peer pressure and other temptations related to drug abuse, how to make your home and community safe, and how parents can to talk to their kids about the dangers of drugs. “This is just the tip of our expansive drug awareness program,”

Fasano said. “Our district partners with Massapequa Takes Action (MTA), a consortium of parents, educators and community members whose mission is to recommend and implement programs that reduce risktaking behaviors. YES Community Counseling is a driving force in the MTA consortium. Through this partnership, we have had numerous awareness programs, such as “Students Against Destructive Decisions” beginning at the elementary level, experts speakers, including Dr. Stephen Dewey and his presentation “Your Brain on Drugs”

and John Halligan’s famous bullying/suicide prevention program, and programs that teach students new skills so they can respond to an emergency situation, such as the Red Watch Band Program.
