The Massapequa School District welcomes two new administrators at the secondary level for the 2021-2022 school year. Daniel Mezzafonte is the supervisor of science for grades 6-12 and Jeff Cronk is the secondary special education supervisor for Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. Mr. Mezzafonte comes to Massapequa with 25 years of experience as a science teacher and administrator. He began his career at Richmond Hill High School in Queens before moving to Hewlett High School, where he taught science for eight years and coordinated the science research program. For the past 13 years, he was the science department chairman at Floral Park Memorial High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental science from Binghamton
University, a master’s degree in microbiology from New York University and his administrative certification from Stony Brook University. Professional memberships include the School Administrators Association of New York State and the Long Island STEM Education Leadership Association. In Massapequa he will oversee a “very talented team” of about 60 science teachers at the high school, Ames and Berner Middle School. He said his goals are to find even more opportunities for students to participate in science activities beyond the walls of Massapequa schools and to continue to grow the research program. “I’m very excited to be able to contribute my expertise in science to an already successful program,” he said. “I want to facilitate a
love of science for our students and work with our teachers to help them succeed.” Mr. Cronk comes to Massapequa from the William Floyd School District, where he was a special education teacher and Committee on Special Education chairperson for 15 years. A secondgeneration educator, his mother was a teacher for three decades.

Pediatric Training to Help Teens Make Healthy Decisions a YESCCC/PACT and Northwell Health Collaboration YES Community Counseling Center’s Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow (PACT) Grant Initiative and Northwell Health invite Nassau County pediatricians to attend its upcoming virtual education program Exploring the Value of Addressing Substance Use for Today’s Pediatricians. The virtual program, featuring Sandeep Kapoor, MD and David Gregory Fagan, MD of Northwell Health, will be held virtually on Tuesday, September 21st from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. From COVID - 19 to underage drinking and substance use, today’s youth and young adults face a multitude of health risks that will impact their lives, families and our communities. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) views pediatric care providers playing a critical, ongoing role in the lives of their adolescent patients and have a unique opportunity to educate them about YES Community Counseling Center and Northwell Health are hosting an ongoing the dangers of substance use and to educatational series to provide local pediatricians with tools to ensure their pediatric influence their behaviors. Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their first Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your
request.

Rain date is September 25th. If you are interested in volunteering with HHRM, there is a new opportunity available! The organization is looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people find items for their families. Please join us for what promises to be a great day to honor very deserving Police Officers. We just held the Grand Opening of Spanky’s Food Factory on Merrick Road in Massapequa Park. This food establishment will be a great addition to Massapequa. We wish the owner Chris well, and look forward to his enhancing the community. The Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce Businessperson of the Year Committee for our Chamber has met, and they have chosen Howard Ritzer and Massapequa Center Rehabilitation & Nursing for our honorees for the 2020 and 2021 awards. The ceremony will be held at the Crest Hollow Country Club with an awards breakfast at 8:00am. Congratulations to both winners.

Walk4Valor & Run4Life Two Events to Support Veteran Suicide Awareness
On September 18, 2021, The Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation will host two unique events on Long Island to create awareness for Veteran Suicide Prevention. Leading fellow Marines, Veterans and friends, Chad Lennon, a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, will hike 22 miles carrying 22 pounds to represent the 22 Veterans who die by suicide each day. Lennon is asking Americans to join him in person or online virtually in memory of our service members who die every day from suicide. In addition to the walk, Long Island runners will join in unity by running a 5K at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, NY. Starting and finishing from the park entrance at 5789 Middle Country Road, the run will engage a new and unique audience to bring additional awareness to this important cause. Walk4Valor and Run4Life events are sponsored by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation with support from Major Charles J. Sanders, NYARNG, Commander for Southold American Legion Post 803. Both fundraisers will support the education of military children and Veterans. It is the foundation’s commitment to bring hope to WELCOME BACK! - Lockhart Elementary School Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci living Veterans and their families. Net proceeds will support the Bob Feller and Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione welcomed back students for the start of the 2021-2022 school year in Massapequa on Sept. 9.
