believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life. I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure. I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son. Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership. I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books. We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity. The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride. Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,
overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York. After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen. After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must

In front of a standingroom-only crowd, John Pillar, PGA Director of Golf Operations at Woodloch Springs, announced the birth of a new destination partnership bringing closer together Woodloch Resort, an award-winning family resort in the Pocono Mountains, and Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization which provides educational scholarships to families of military men and women who have fallen or been disabled while on active duty. Woodloch’s 6th annual Folds of Honor Golf Classic culminated in a celebration of more than 200 attendees eager to rejoice in the fact that over $50,000 was raised for this year’s event, creating scholarships and changing the lives of 10 families. “We want to serve as a reprieve, as temporary as it may be, for families who have given the ultimate sacrifice by allowing them a little relaxation or just a distraction. Woodloch fosters an environment for families to reconnect and have a lot of fun doing so,” remarked Pillar. “This is why Woodloch and Folds of Honor are a perfect team. Vanderbilt’s Storied “Alva” Yacht William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva. The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany. On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943. Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York. The trip was preparation
for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport museum. Ten years, later, just before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call. On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship

Plymouth was escorting a ship convoy 120 miles southeast of Cape Henry, Virginia. The ship’s sonar gear alerted the captain and crew of underwater movement in the vicinity. Moments later, the Plymouth was spotted in the periscope of U-566, a German submarine. The sub launched a torpedo at 9:37 p.m. “The gunboat had made an underwater sound contact while escorting a
coastal convoy,” the Uboat. net entry reported. “Just as the ship swung left to bear on the target, she was struck just abaft the bridge. The ship rolled first to starboard, then took a heavy list to port with the entire port side forward of amidships in flames and sank within two minutes.” Of the Plymouth’s 179 officers and men, only 84 survived. They were picked up in heavy seas by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Calypso and arrived in
Norfolk on August 6. The commander, Lt. Ormsby M. Mitchel, Jr., was thrown violently against a bulkhead by the explosion. He sustained serious injuries, which later required amputation of his left leg. Despite his own condition, he directed abandon-ship operations and remained at his post until the ship went down. Mitchel was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.

Bluefish Tournament Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announce that registration is open for the 33rd annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 16th. “This all-day sporting event features hours of fun fishing followed by a tailgate party with refreshments, raffles and awards,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly.” The tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is limited to
the first 350 boats with entry fees discounted for Town residents. Costs to enter are $35 for residents and $45 for non-Town residents. Councilman Hand added, “This event always proves to be a great time for participants. Anyone who registers prior to September 10th will receive a tournament T-shirt and be automatically entered in a special raffle. Residents can pick up registration forms at all Town facilities.” Raffle prizes include Solstice inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests,
restaurant certificates and more. In addition to plaques, winners of first through 15th place will be awarded gift certificates. Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes. Co-sponsors of this year’s Bluefish Tournament include: Mill Max Corporation, Duffy’s Bait and Tackle, Bridge Marina, Compass Rose, Sagamore Collision, North Shore Fire Equipment, BMW of Oyster Bay and Wall’s Wharf. Massapequa Student’s BOCES Designing Summer Massapequa student Veronica Horan learned basic printing processes, principals of design, color theory, typography and logo designing in the Graphic Design program at the Nassau BOCES and Hofstra Summer Camp. Nassau BOCES partnered with Hofstra’s Continuing Education program, as well as the college’s Summer Camp, to offer a variety of exciting and fun educational opportunities for young people this summer. Students entering grades 6-11 were offered a number of programs providing experiences in career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and
more. Other programs offered a variety of experiences in fields such as Aviation, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts and Veterinary Medicine. Some programs were offered at three separate levels — Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced. Programs were conducted in different locations, such as Nassau BOCES’ state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center in Westbury, Caumsett State Historic Park in Lloyd Harbor, and the Nassau BOCES Brookville Environmental Education Center in Brookville.
Through two featured programs this year, Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education enabled campers to discover the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and the Brookville Outdoor Education site. “A Field Study in Marine Biology” gave campers a chance to become Marine Biologists in training. In “STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Marine Exploration Technology,” teams of campers built an underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle).

The lasting story of the 2018 elections, nationwide, will be the emergence of a new generation of leaders; first-time candidates eager to enter government to solve problems, flush with fresh ideas about serving their communities, mindful of listening to their constituents and being accountable to them. Voters in the 18th
Assembly District have an opportunity to elect someone with just such promise: Taylor Raynor. Raynor grew up in Uniondale and attended its schools, a springboard to attending Spelman College and obtaining a master’s degree in industrial psychology from Hofstra University. Raynor is challenging 30-year incumbent Earlene Hooper for the Democratic nomination in the September 13th primary, a contest that will determine the ultimate winner for this overwhelmingly Democratic district. Hooper’s lack of transparency is so bad she’s even invisible in her district. There are about
133,000 residents in the 18th AD, and Hooper has failed most of them, except for the anointed few in her Hempstead inner circle. Hooper has shamelessly blocked Freeport’s attempts to have its armory transferred to the village, preferring to have it delivered to a favored church group. Her lack of leadership in the continuing crisis in the Hempstead school district is another reason to make a change. She tried to block a $1.5 million anti-poverty grant from being administered by the United Way so she could have more control over it.
Carle Place Scholarship Recipient The Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) has awarded its 2018 Nicholas J. Bartilucci Manhattan College Scholarship to Raymond DeSimone of Carle Place, New York. Open to entering freshmen enrolled full-time in any engineering degree program at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY, Mr. DeSimone, a Carle Place High School graduate, applied for and was awarded this coveted annual scholarship based on his academic credentials and extracurricular activities. NSWCA President and Westbury Water District
Commissioner Vincent Abbatiello presided over the ceremony and stated, “This annual scholarship honors the memory of the late Nicholas J. Bartilucci, a towering figure in the Long Island water industry who passed away in 2016. By recognizing and enabling outstanding engineering students such as Raymond DeSimone, we continue to keep Nick’s passion for engineering education a tangible reality.” Held at Angelina’s restaurant in Williston Park, NSWCA President Abbatiello acknowledged during the award presentation ceremony the involvement and assistance
of NSWCA Treasurer and Carle Place Water District Commissioner Lawrence F. Zaino, Carle Place High School Principal Thomas DePaolo, and Director of Planned Giving at Manhattan College Ms. Mary Ellen Malone for being instrumental in the scholarship award administration and selection process. DeSimone’s parents, Richard and Karen DeSimone, were in attendance as well along with water commissioners from all districts.

The free event will be held on Thursday, October 18th at Adelphi University’s University Center. Doors will open at 6 pm and speakers begin at 7 pm. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. Many women do not have such support so she was determined to help. She and her husband, George Raptis, and sister, Despina Yarian, established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013.
