Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Attend a special service commemorating 9-11 at houses of worship. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.

They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the months of October, November, and December. This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center and Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration begins September 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Town’s

Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, as it is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register beginning

Wednesday, September 18, as this 8-week program fills quickly on a first come first serve basis” Each class is about 30 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate

age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. Toddler arts and crafts projects for this program can include season/ holiday cards, ceramics, masks, and headpieces. The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 8 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child.

Attention Children 12 & Under

Classes will take place on Tuesdays at the Hicksville Athletic Center at 10 am (two year olds only) and 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Tuesday, October 8th. Classes will also take place on Wednesdays at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only), 11 am (three and four year olds), or 1:30 pm (three and four year olds) beginning Wednesday, October 8th.

Finally, classes will also take place on Thursday at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only) or at 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Thursday, October 10. Hands-On Robotics Exploration A small but enthusiastic group of students were immersed in robotics at Massapequa High School in August, giving them an introduction to the rapidly expanding technology. The annual robotics camp was open to students entering sixth through ninth grades, who worked closely with high school technology teacher Matt Swanson. Students built robots, then added attachments throughout the week as the challenges got progressively harder. For one activity, they added an arm with a sensor that

could identify the color of a ball. If the ball was the color that students programmed the robot to respond to, the arm would pick it up. On the final day of the camp, students participated in a robot battle, trying to knock the others out of the ring. Mr. Swanson said that the camp taught students about coding, programming and engineering design. It also prepared them for their middle school technology courses, which now have a greater emphasis on robotics, particularly in

eighth grade. “The camp gives them a taste of robotics, to give students an interest in classes that are offered at the high school and middle school levels,” said Patricia LiVecchi, supervisor of career and technical education. “This is the wave of the future.” Members of the high school robotics team also worked with the students throughout the week. In addition to building robots, camp participants explored 3D printing. Town Unveils New Memorial Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board hosted the Town’s annual Memorial Ceremony, on Thursday, September 5, in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America. The ceremony, held at the September 11th Memorial located at TOBAY Beach, also unveiled the

new 9/11 Walls of Honor in memory of those who tragically lost their lives to 9/11-related cancer and illnesses. The Town’s 9/11 Memorial is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The new Walls of Honor

features the names of those lost in relation to 9/11 illnesses. The ceremony included a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, religious readings and bagpipe music. Hundreds of residents, including various members of local fire and police departments, as well as other emergency personnel were on hand for the occasion.
