Civic Food Drive On Saturday, September 14th, a Food Drive will be conducted by the Bay Village Civic Association. The sponsors of the Amityville Farmers’ Market continue to support the community in many ways. This is the second year they will conduct a drive to benefit the Town of Babylon Food Pantry, as well as St. Martin of Tours. Please bring any non-
perishable food items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Paper products and personal care items, such as toothpaste would also be appreciated. The shelves are pretty bare and the need is great. While at the Market, look at the fabulous, fresh produce that has recently been harvested. Check out Bambino’s pasta and mozzarella, Monty’s Bread,
Laurie’s Granola, and the other wonderful vendors. They will continue to be in the Village at the 9/11 Memorial Park on Broadway through the end of October. The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Auto Show & Swap Meet at Field #4 of Robert Moses. Over 50 Fair Returns
The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair returns to the Melville Marriott on Sunday, September 29th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The oneday expo is being organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there will be free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who need one, compliments of Patriot Mobility, Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who also organizes Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair every April. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there will be “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added. The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 11th. There will be pumpkins, a farm stand, hay maze, pony rides, craft vendors and much more, along with the usual exhibits that the Game Farm provides during the spring and summer seasons. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye, and loss of sensation.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.; at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 and includes the cost of parking and snacks.

The Brain Aneurysm Center of the North ShoreLIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 5th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 28th, to promote awareness and education. DeMarco offers the following tips to ensure the safety of school children and motorists during hectic school mornings and when they return home in the afternoons. • Do not text or talk on the phone while driving. This type of distracted driving could have tragic consequences, especially when there are children playing near bus stops. • Stop your car far enough from all school buses to allow children the space to safely enter and exit their bus. Most accidents happen within ten feet of a stopped bus. • Watch out for children walking to and from their bus stop. Oftentimes kids will walk in the street, and fail to look both ways. Slow down to give yourself more control over your vehicle in the event a child does something unpredictable. • If you see a child

You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the
very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center
anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

Calling All Photogs Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella invites residents to submit their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. “Publications such as the 2013 Summer Guide or Town Calendar features some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilman Muscarella said. “As the Town is currently putting together its calendar for 2014, residents are invited
to submit pictures for consideration.” The Councilman noted that photos are accepted all year long, as photos are considered for publications throughout the year. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming
Town publications,” the Councilman said. Councilman Muscarella went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at m k a n e @ o y s t e r b a y - n y.
