TOWN DEDICATES BASKETBALL COURT - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently dedicated a basketball court at Anchor Park in Massapequa in memory of Tyler James Abizeid, a beloved Massapequa teen who was only 14 years old when he passed away. Tyler, an avid sports fan, played basketball on the court being named in his honor the day he died. Tyler’s life was celebrated at a special dedication ceremony, including the gift of life he gave eight people through organ donation.

In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks, but
many people felt there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first

Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at half-mast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Lords of 52nd Street will play ‘one last summer blast’ drive-in concert at TOBAY Beach on Saturday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. This free concert will offer Town residents one last chance to soak up summertime fun before the fall season arrives. The Lords of 52nd Street features the legends of The
Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Lords of 52nd Street are legends of rock n’ roll and put on an amazing performance each time out, recreating all of Billy Joel’s indelible hits that they were originally a part of. The Town is proud to present this free drive-in concert to residents.” Vehicles will be admitted
to the parking lot on a firstcome, first-served basis beginning at 6:00 p.m. the day of the event. For the safety of all residents, concertgoers must remain in their cars. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.
Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. The basketball court will be dedicated as “Tyler’s Court,” with the inscription ‘On This Court No One Stands Alone’ to commemorate Tyler’s approach to life, as he continuously gave to others and helped those in need even at the end of his life.” Tyler James Abizeid was born on September 15th, 2004, and lived in Massapequa and attended Massapequa High School. The only child of Jessica and Anthony Abizeid, Tyler had a passion for sports, especially basketball, and could usually be found out here on the court in Anchor Park in Massapequa working on his game. With a heart of gold, in his short 14 years, Tyler continuously gave to others, and carried himself
as someone much older and wiser than a boy his age. “Although Tyler was called home far too soon, leaving a void of incredible sadness with his friends, family, and community, Tyler’s parents chose to honor his memory in the best way possible and celebrated his amazing life and selfless attitude by deciding to donate his organs, changing 8 other people’s lives forever,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Tyler’s legacy will forever live on through this amazing decision, and it is only appropriate that in death as in life, Tyler was a giver, constantly working to make other’s lives better through his words and actions.”

The program will feature a speech by a family member of a late NYPD detective who died of a 9/11-related illness, and was known for his advocacy for fellow heroes of September 11th. Hempstead Town’s 9/11 Memorial Park includes ocean views, an elevated memorial walkway, a 30-foottall beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center, and a giant memorial table inscribed with Walt Whitman’s “On
the Beach at Night.” The names of victims are etched on the monument and a directional plaque points to the location of the once majestic Twin Towers. Memorial Park is located at Town Park Point Lookout, Lido Boulevard, Point Lookout, NY (intersection of Loop Parkway and Lido Boulevard) The beachside 9/11 memorial plays a special role in the lives of many Long Island neighbors, who were drawn to the beachfront in the wake of the terrorist attacks, looking westward in disbelief to the location where the majestic twin towers once stood.

Walking the halls every day in her new role is a thrill, but it’s the gymnasium the especially brings back fond memories for the former varsity basketball player. Ms. Lowell has worked in the district for 22 years, starting as a social studies teacher at Berner Middle School and most recently served as executive assistant to the principal at Berner. Regularly send letters to a grandparent or other senior, sharing tales of daily life and key moments that will bring them joy. Chances are they’ll return the favor with a letter of their own. Explore technology
together. Younger generations can introduce seniors to available technology that can bring them closer. This may include digital assistants that enable them to share videos, tablets to send email or access social media, mobile phones for calling and texting, and anything else families can customize to their needs. Shop and run errands. Help aging loved ones perform the tasks that they may not be able to tackle on their own. This can include picking up groceries or prescriptions.
Did you know? Many people plan to retire by a certain age, but few may actually still be working at their targeted retirement age. In the United States, the age at which working Americans expect to retire has risen to 66. But a Gallup poll showed that most don’t stay on the job that long, instead retiring
when they’re about 60 or 61. In addition, according to a 2018 Employee Benefit Research Institute survey, 48 percent of workers wanted to retire after age 65, but only 19 percent of retirees stayed on the job that long. The reasons vary, but one positive outcome is
having enough money to live comfortably during retirement. Still, early retirement largely involves unexpected scenarios. These may include poor health, having to care for an aging parent, downsizing, new skills required for the job, or other work-related reasons.

On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,
is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.
