Home Improvement Projects for Your Fall To-Do List Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated and unappealing to prospective buyers.
Leaky roofs can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately.
Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists:

Prevent Mobile Phone-Related Auto Accidents
Because they enable people to make calls or send messages from just about anywhere, mobile phones can be great conveniences. But they also can be annoying when conversations, texting or perusing the Internet gets in the way of proper etiquette. Talking loudly in public areas, texting when in the middle of a face-to-face conversation or sharing personal details in public are not just bad manners, but such behaviors also can be unsafe. Poor mobile phone etiquette is cause for some concern, but there is great cause for concern for people who find themselves
routinely distracted by their mobile phones while driving or operating equipment. Using a mobile phone when driving greatly increases a person’s risk of getting into an accident. Distracted driving has become something of an epidemic, as the following figures, courtesy of Don’t Text and Drive, illustrate: • Texting or doing something on your phone can distract drivers for as long as five seconds. If you’re traveling at 55 miles per hour, that is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field without looking at the road. • Texting while driving makes
you 23 times more likely than normal to be in a car crash. • Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 involved in car accidents in the United States, 13 percent admitted to texting or talking on their phones at the times of their crashes. • The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to around 1 .6 million crashes each year, with nearly 330,000 injuries occurring from such accidents. • Cell phone usage while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at
the legal limit. Although the majority of drivers support a ban on texting while driving, many still continue to do it. The single best way to prevent driving accidents and fatalities related to mobile phone usage is to put the phone down. Consider the following suggestions to help you avoid looking at your phone while behind the wheel: • Keep your phone in a purse or in a bag in the back seat so that it is not readily accessible while driving. Many cars now have Bluetooth-enabled handsfree dialing and calling, so you do not need to have the phone
nearby to answer a call. • Leave your phone at home on short trips and give yourself a break from screen time. • Set up an automatically generated text message that indicates you are driving. Other apps will read out texts to you or block incoming calls or texts altogether. • Turn off notifications so you will not be tempted to look at your phone each time there’s a new pop-up or sound. Remember, any texts can wait until you pull over, park or arrive at your destination.

This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you
endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres
throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup On Saturday, September 24th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will once again join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup. The cleanup is registered as one of hundreds of The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup events around the world taking place each
September. The Oyster Bay event engages the community in protecting our local beaches and waterways and to educate residents by changing the behaviors that create pollution. Throughout the event, volunteers will patrol the shoreline to clean up any debris, while those in boats will collect trash from the water. Volunteers are invited to participate in the
program, which begins at 8 a.m. and runs through 12 p.m. There will be three meeting places, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park located on Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach located on Bayville Avenue in Bayville and Centre Island Beach located on Bayville Avenue in Oyster Bay. Residents can volunteer and are also welcome to sign up the day

of the event. Volunteers are not obligated to stay the full day; even a few minutes of assistance can make a difference. It is recommended that volunteers bring work gloves. Awareness Through Artwork The Massapequa School District is pleased to announce that students from East Lake Elementary School have been named winners in a pair of recent poster contests. Three students placed in the annual School Bus Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the Nassau County chapter of the New York Association of Pupil Transportation. The winners included sixth-graders Kimberly
Westenberg and Olivia Cristadoro, and firstgrader Julia Lomonaco. Olivia’s artwork continued in the competition, and she placed second overall in the sixth-grade through eighth-grade division at the county level. Fifth-grade art students at East Lake, under the direction of teacher Patti Krakoff, participated in New York American Water Company’s “Be
Water Wise” art contest. The students created posters that emphasized the importance of water protection and conservation. Student Olivia Harris was selected as a winner. Acquainted with Ames Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus welcomed its newest group of students, who attended ninth-grade orientation on August 30th and 31st. Principal Jordan McCaw, Executive Assistant to the Principal Tania Willman and several staff members greeted the students, who will spend one year at Ames before moving on to the high school’s main campus. Together, they reviewed important information
with students including the daily schedule, cell phone policy, dress code, attendance regulations and transportation. The incoming freshman also learned about the variety of extracurricular activities offered at Ames and were encouraged to get involved as there are opportunities for every student. The program concluded with a walk-through of the building. Students, with copies of their schedule
and building maps in hand, were able to tour the building and learn where all their classes are located. “We welcomed the new ninth-graders to Ames and wished them success this year,” Mr. McCaw said. “Although their time with us will be short, we want students to have a great experience and build a strong academic foundation in a year that is a significant part of their high school education.”

Walking to End Alzheimer’s The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Long Island residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. The Walks will take place on September 17th, at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon and on September 24th, at Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for 3,000+ participants on Long Island who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise
Garden ceremony. At the beginning of the Walk, participants hold high a Promise Flower based on the reason for their involvement: • Blue: I have Alzheimer’s. • Purple: I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s disease. • Yellow: I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. • Orange: I support the cause and a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s “This disease can be one of isolation.
