Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto invite residents to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Walk for Autism, held to benefit the Advantage Care Health Center’s Fay J. Linder Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The Walk, now in its 11th year, will take place on Saturday, September 22nd, at John J. The Massapequa School District formally welcomed more than 20 educators at its two-day new teacher orientation on August 22nd-23rd in the Teacher Learning Center at McKenna Elementary School. Many of the new faculty members are joining the district for the first time, while others are moving into permanent positions.

They will teach a variety of subjects and grade levels throughout Massapequa’s nine schools. Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis greeted the teachers and asked them to share the reasons they decided to enter the education profession. She read the book “Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden” to inspire them to become the kinds of teachers who

help their students grow and ﬂourish. Teachers received their Chromebooks and learned about the advantages of the district’s 1:1 Learning Anytime, Anywhere initiative that provides students in grades 3-12 with their own devices. They were also able to meet the district’s technology learning coaches, who will work with them to

integrate technology into classroom instruction. Each teacher received an inspirational poster for their classroom, with messages such as “Attitude is a little thing that can make a big difference,” “Mistakes are proof that you are trying” and “Believe you can and you will.”

I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain. While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a ﬂashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words. My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. The mantra of this foundation is “Learn today to choose wisely tomorrow!” This organization holds hands-on workshops, where participants will be given course material, handouts and goals to accomplish. Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.

As a way to benefit and honor certain individuals, this nonprofit holds many events throughout the year. Some of these events include their Dancing for a Cure event, which raises awareness and research for individuals who have or have had cancer; their Holiday Dream Mission, which assists families in financial distress during the holiday season; their Military Saves Week, which is geared toward assisting military members financially; and their Angel Awards, which honors women of Long Island who have created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development! Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Businesses, civic groups, community centers and other groups can host seminars or workshops for their employees, members, the communityat-large, etc. If you are interested in scheduling a program, the opportunity is available! best games in town, and features many respected coaches dedicated to teaching this outstanding sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in the program,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As a hockey enthusiast myself, I am proud to announce that the children who attend the program get the unique opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality.” Individuals interested in registering for the 2018 Fall Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate,

proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Check, money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. The program is held on Sunday mornings, and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in the Fall Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup, scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 15th. This environmental cleanup is co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay. “This environmental cleanup initiative at Oyster Bay Harbor includes Town employees and volunteers rolling up their sleeves and working side by side to ride our beaches and shoreline areas of debris,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Join us on Saturday, September 15th and help make a difference!” Volunteers are encouraged to meet at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront

Ms. LiVecchi, a West Bay Shore resident, has worked in the district for twenty-two years, including the past six years as dean of students at Massapequa High School’s main campus. McKenna Teacher Named Assistant Principal

Mary Anne Ferraro has been appointed as the assistant principal of McKenna Elementary

School in the Massapequa School District. She has been an elementary teacher in the district for fourteen years, and most recently taught second grade at McKenna. Ms. Ferraro, a Farmingdale resident, attended Massapequa schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. She holds her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in literacy from Dowling College, and earned her school building leadership certificate from the New York Institute of

Technology. She has a strong knowledge of the elementary curriculum, having taught first, second, third, fourth and sixth grades during her time in the district.
