For the ninth consecutive year, Saddle Rock Ranch, a service of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is serving as a training site for Special Olympics New York Equestrian athletes. Every year this training event is facilitated by PATHcertified instructors and several teenage volunteers. The site received double the amount of annual registrations this year. This has made the support of these local volunteers more critical than ever – and they have risen to meet the challenge. Saddle Rock Ranch has been hosting Special Olympics New York equestrian training since 2005. For the first few years the nearly 16-acre ranch has accommodated 25 to 30 riders in four weekly sessions each season. “This year our registration exploded,”

“On September 7th, Saddle Rock’s 62 athletes will travel to HorseAbility in Old Westbury to compete in the regional Special Olympics New York Horse Show. “This event is a huge deal for our athletes and they depend on the volunteers who have helped them train to get through the competition with as little stress as possible,” says Dell’Aira. One challenge these Olympians have to overcome is that they will not be able to bring their lesson horses to the show, so the support of our regular volunteers is even more important. “The program is very challenging to manage,” Dell’Aira commented. “But when our athletes compete and stand on the podium with their medals and ribbons and huge smiles on their faces, it makes every moment of the stress worthwhile.” Saddle Rock Ranch is always looking for volunteers for their community therapeutic riding and Special Olympics

explained Julie Dell’Aira, Therapeutic Riding Program Coordinator. “We had 65 registrants and added ten sessions to our typical schedule. Since training takes place in the summer when many families are vacationing, we are really struggling to get enough volunteers every night.” A typical practice session includes four special needs riders, one
certified instructor and anywhere from four to 12 support volunteers. The ranch hosts two to three lessons each week night and an additional four lessons on the weekends to accommodate all of the equestrian athletes. This heavy load has been managed by a very small army of diligent volunteers, led by one amazing 13 year-old, who spends a minimum of 21 hours a week helping the athletes.

More than three thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 22nd, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Mark S. Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular and free Co-ed Fall Walking Program is currently underway, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “Walking is an excellent form of exercise that is easy and low-impact that’s suitable for every age,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is an ideal form of activity for males and females for all fitness levels. Response to the Town-sponsored walking programs over the years has been enthusiastic. People join for the exercise, as well as the social aspect. Best of all, you can learn great tips on exercise while getting a workout for free!” The Town’s Fall Co-Ed Walking Program begins Monday, September 9th, and continues through Thursday, October 17th. The program will be held at both Syosset-Woodbury
Community Park and John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. “Every Monday and Wednesday, beginning September 9th, walkers will meet in front of the mansion at SyossetWoodbury Community Park for a 10 to 11 a.m. walk,” the Councilwoman said. “On Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning September 10th, walkers can meet in the parking lot to the left of the main entrance of John J. Burns Town Park for a 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. walk. Those who have the energy to walk more than once a week can certainly sign up for all the courses.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that Walking is simply one of the easiest — and safest — activities for burning calories and tuning up the cardiovascular system. “Walking is an activity for a lifetime,” she said. “In addition to the physical
benefits, it’s an activity that is rejuvenating for the mind, spirit and morale.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that registration forms can be obtained at Town Hall South and at the Recreation Office in the TOB Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites all residents, their families and friends to attend the Town’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11th, 2001. The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at
Tobay Beach. “The Town’s September 11 memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.”
The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11th, 2001. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. “What makes our memorial so meaningful is that it’s personal,” the Supervisor said. “The
men and women whose names are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues. They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.” The event on September 9th will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe

In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read. “I hope that all residents will join us on Monday, September 9th to mark the 12th anniversary and honor the memory of our beloved friends and neighbors who perished on September 11th, 2001,” Supervisor

COMMUNITY DAY - The bit of rain on Sunday, August 18th did not deter Temple Sinai from hosting their OpenHouse/Event Day. Bobbie and the Strays of Freeport brought three beautifully adoptable dogs. Temple Sinai had collected contributions, which they thankfully appreciated. Camille from Philip Michael Salon of Seaford donated her services for hair donations of 10” or more to be sent to Locks of Love. United Skates of Seaford donated a classic birthday party for 10 children to be raffled off to a lucky child who was present. Calvert Manor Bagels of Seaford donated a delicious bagel and spread platter. New members, existing members, the religious school teachers, board members and the Rabbi enjoyed making crafts, face painting and getting together.

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

There is no substitute for blood. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation
can make the difference between life and death. Remember, there are many people out there hoping you are the type to give blood. More important, you may also be the ‘right type’ for a patient waiting for the gift of life.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 121 pints of blood at its August 1st drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives, but summer puts a strain on blood donations, so this kind of response is very heartening,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When broken down into component parts, each pint of blood could potentially help save three lives. That translates into 363 people who could benefit from these donations.
