Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites all residents, their families and friends to attend the Town’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11th, 2001. The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach. “The Town’s September 11th memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.” The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents

The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. “What makes our memorial so meaningful is that it’s personal,” the Supervisor said. “The men and women whose names are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues. They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.” The event on September 9th will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read.

Of Deadlines & Days Off By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What to write... It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing. Makes for stimulating reading, right? Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option
of putting a little more thought into it. Today, not so much. Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too? And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails… Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or
two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore. It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race. We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Seventh Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Today, one in 88 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have become available since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, but doctors have yet to make any true conclusions on how to reverse the diagnosis.” Now in its seventh
year, the Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “The center focusses on building awareness to the issue of autism while offering families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research,” Supervisor Venditto said. Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the tailgate party. Councilman Pinto noted that all contestants must be pre-registered. All those who register before September 7th will receive a tournament T-shirt. All contestants will automatically be entered in a special raffle, with great prizes including Mercury inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, water skis, dinners for two and much more. Registration is now underway for the 34th Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to recreation tennis players from across Long Island. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0) and advanced (4.04.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to feed the hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. In addition, canned goods will be collected for a local food pantry at four tennis parties scheduled during the upcoming season. Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Technology is an important part of many people’s daily lives. Devices like computers, tablets, smartphones, and video games are now so widely used that it’s hard to imagine a life without email, the Internet or text messages. Even children are proving adept at using technology, which can be a valuable tool for educators attempting to reach today’s youngsters. Digital learning is learning facilitated by technology. Not only can digital learning be done in the classroom, but also it can extend to home life as children continue to explore lessons through hands-on interaction with digital devices. According to data from Project Tomorrow’s “Speak Up” study, an initiative of the nation’s leading education nonprofit organization, students are frustrated with the lack of technology in their
schools and by the lack of sophisticated use of that technology. The study indicates that students want more of the following: • Social-based learning • Tools that increase untethered learning • Development of and connection to a personal network of expert resources • A digitally rich learning environment Students acclimated to technology at home are not content to merely rely on textbooks or CDs in the classroom. They’re more interested in interactive, Web-based tools that enhance communication and collaboration. As a result of this shifting landscape, parents should expect to see more lessons and homework involving interactive technology. To make this transition go more smoothly, teachers and parents can work together to ensure kids are making the most of the
exciting developments in education. The following are just a handful of the changes that figure to come about as a result of the transition to digital learning: • Lesson plans, assignments and tutoring opportunities available online for continued reference. • Learning-centered chat rooms for peer-to-peer interaction and sharing of materials. • Digital content in the way of high quality academic materials available through interactive apps and not stagnant PDFs or text materials. Software may range from video lectures to learning games. • Increased availability of teachers and professors. Students and parents will be able to reach out to educators beyond school hours if

Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup On Saturday, September 20th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone. “For over twenty years, Town employees and volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and completed a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “All day people walk along the shoreline
collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats, cleaning up trash and discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.” C o u n c i l m a n Macagnone went on to say that volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 677-5853.
Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. “By the end of each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other trash are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Contrary to what people may believe, debris does not immediately disintegrate, but actually takes weeks, months or even years,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “The longer this litter remains on our shorelines, the
greater the damage will be to the environment. “If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, I invite you to join us on September 20th,” Councilman Macagnone said. “If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will help to preserve our environment for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.”

Security Supervisor Arthur Nappo was patrolling the grounds of South Oaks Hospital on a summer evening in June when a speeding vehicle pulled up to the front of one of the patient buildings. The driver said, “My friend was at a party and is overdosing on heroin,” and Mr. Nappo sprang into action. He immediately ordered the staff to call 911 and called a “code blue.” The victim was placed on a
Rehabilitation Center. “You just know this guy is in trouble and we needed to get things going quickly,” Mr. Nappo said. “I was very happy heading home that evening, knowing he was going to be OK and was extremely proud of the expertise and compassion of the members of our clinical team. I also came away with a heightened awareness regarding the significance of having a drug like Narcan available to support the medical intervention when someone has overdosed.” Gerard Heinz, Director of Security, at South Oaks Hospital called Mr. Nappo a dedicated and respected member of the security team. “On the evening of this incident,” Mr. Heinz said, “he conducted himself in an exemplary manner, providing customer service at the highest level while securing the necessary team in the shortest amount of time to save the life of this young man.” Mr. Nappo is a retired New York City Police Sergeant who has worked with the South Oaks security team for four years. He lives in Suffolk County with his lovely wife, two daughters and a son.
While many Town beaches are soon closing for the season, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson is pleased to announce that Tobay beach will be open for residents to enjoy the weekend following Labor Day (September 6-7). “I am very happy to announce that Tobay beach will re-open to the public on September 6th and 7th, giving residents an extended opportunity to enjoy a little more summer at Tobay,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “If you haven’t gotten around to
going to the beach this summer, the weekend after Labor Day is the chance to catch up and have a fun day at the beach.” Councilwoman Johnson also noted that beach admission fees would still be collected for residents that do not have a seasonal sticker on their car.
