Open-Air 9/11 20th Year Remembrance Mass

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is holding a remembrance Mass for families of victims, first responders and Ground Zero workers as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th 2001 Terrorist Attacks on America. The Mass will be led by Bishop John O. Barres, of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. This special service will be held outside at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood’s 9/11 Memorial. The Mass will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to arrive by 12:30 p.m. Family members and members of the Long Island Community and the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Seating will be limited, and not guaranteed. Recognizing that some family members may be elderly and/or need assistance, those attending are urged to plan in advance and consider arriving early. Parking may be some distance from the September 11th Memorial where the outdoor Mass will be held. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 by completing the RSVP form on www.CCLongIsland. org or to email Memorials@ CCLongIsland.org with their name and the number of attendees.

Approximately one hundred names have recently been added to the cemetery’s September 11th Memorial. The memorial, a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks, was erected in 2003. The memorial currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Newly added names include both those who passed away on 9/11 and individuals who worked at Ground Zero and succumbed to related illnesses, bringing the number of those to be remembered on the memorial on the day of the Mass to approximately 500 in total. “As we mark the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. This special Mass led by Bishop Barres is an important event on this solemn day. It is important that we remember the victims of the attacks, those who rushed to their aid and all who selflessly gave of themselves afterwards at Ground Zero, suffering years of chronic health conditions and related illnesses. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace,

reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. We welcome all to visit the memorial at any time, including joining us at this remembrance mass,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. They met the summer of 1983 at the East Meadow Jewish Center bingo when Lynda came to the weekly bingo with her Mom (Lenora) and Howard was the bingo caller. They enjoyed their ﬁrst date at the movies, but Lynda was already moving to California to pursue her career. Six months later Lynda moved back to NY and returned to bingo in Feb’84. When Howard saw Lynda he didn’t think twice and asked for a date. So in Feb. 1984 they were reunited and dated for a year before getting engaged in the fall of 1985. They were engaged for a year and were married Sept. 1, 1986. Happy 35th to my best friend. Love, Howard

56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to ﬁve amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and

the many individuals and families donating to our pantry to gather food for the hungry.

School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. Beach Season Extended Through September 26th

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the extension of beach season in the Town of Oyster Bay, as TOBAY Beach will remain open on weekends and select days through September 26th. Lifeguards will be on duty to protect residents as they enjoy the nice weather and swim in the ocean on September 7th and 8th (when many schools are closed), as well as during the weekends of September 11th & 12th, 18th & 19th, and 25th & 26th. TOBAY will continue to be open to residents only for

the duration of this season – and for no charge on the dates listed above. “Residents are invited to savor the last of the summer season by visiting our beautiful TOBAY Beach through September,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Not only will TOBAY remain open, but admission into the beach will also be free, making a visit to this staycation destination even more convenient and enticing.” As part of the extension of the summer beach season, TOBAY Beach will be open Saturdays and Sundays

through September 26th, as well as the days following Labor Day, Tuesday, September 7th and Wednesday, September 8th. Lifeguards will be on duty, manning stands and protecting residents in the ocean each of these days. Extended beach days will continue to be for residents only and are available free of charge. Free Animal Adoptions Throughout September Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of September. “I invite and encourage residents looking for a new pet to check in with the Town’s Animal Shelter during the month of September, as general adoption fees will be waived. Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for the perfect new furry companion,” Supervisor Saladino stated. During the month of

September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, or visit www. oysterbaytown.com. In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on September 11th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary, and the clinic will also be

offering to microchip pets for $25. If a pet is ever lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner. The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Residents interested in visiting the shelter can call to make an appointment.
