Toddler Arts & Crafts Program

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the months of October, November, and December. This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center and Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration begins September 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, as it is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register

beginning Wednesday, September 18, as this 8-week program fills quickly on a first come first serve basis” Each class is about 30 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. Toddler arts and crafts projects for this program can include season/holiday cards, ceramics, masks, and headpieces. The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 8 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Tuesdays

at the Hicksville Athletic Center at 10 am (two year olds only) and 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Tuesday, October 8th. Classes will also take place on Wednesdays at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only), 11 am (three and four year olds), or 1:30 pm (three and four year olds) beginning Wednesday, October 8th. Finally, classes will also take place on Thursday at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only) or at 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Thursday, October 10. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year. Marching Band Revives The ’80s

The 1980s will come to Massapequa High School this fall as the marching band is planning a show that will take audiences back in time three decades. Band members learned the music for the show at the annual marching band camp. This year’s ’80s rockthemed show will include three songs: “Dr. Feelgood” by the Mötley Crüe, “Any Way You Want it” by Journey and “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne. The band, accompanied by the Color Guard, will perform at home and playoff football games as well as the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival. “We wanted to do

something different,” said band co-director Andrew Dwork. “We haven’t done a rock show in 10 years. I think the students will really be into it and I think the audience will get involved.” Mr. Dwork and CoDirector Eva Marie Arnold were joined by elementary band teachers Gary Loock and Jessica Wyman, Berner Middle School band teacher Rob Giannotti, Ames Campus band director Michael Perticone and Color Guard director Andrea Gropf in helping students prepare for the show. The marching band consists of approximately 135 students in grades 10-12.

This year’s student drum majors are Sarah Benedict and Sean Buchanan, and the Color Guard captains are Colleen Giradin and Makayla Shanley. The three-day camp included marching formation drills on the football field, and music rehearsal in the school. Ms. Arnold said that rehearsals will continue once the school year begins, and the camp helps students get a head start on learning the music. There was also a little fun mixed in with a water balloon fight to close out one day, and a visit from a shaved ice truck another day.

Celebrating 25 Years This year marks the 25 year anniversary for American Black Belt Academy, located at 4875 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Started in 1994 by Tom and Lorraine LoVarco as a small modest Karate school located in Massapequa Park it has grown today to be one of the largest most diverse schools in the country. “We started in a small 900 square foot location were I taught all the classes and my wife Lorraine was the office manager,” says Tom LoVarco. Our enrollment began to grow quickly and our students were competing in National tournaments and doing very well. The school started to be recognized for producing top rated

competitors. Changing locations several times in the same area the size of the school is nearly 10 times larger than when it opened. And since opening, the facility has expanded into offering not only high quality American Kenpo classes for kids and adults but now offers a full fitness program, Kids BJJ and MMA, Kickboxing and a Martial Arts After School Program with transportation from all the schools in the Massapequa School District. A full day Martial Arts camp is even available during the summer. They also host two large Karate tournaments each year. Now joined by their children Chris and Danielle along with an amazing

staff of instructors and assistants the school is very organized and extremely professional. The location has 3 large classrooms that gives the ability to offer over 80 classes each week. Allowing for convenient class times and the detailed separation of ages and experience level. The story doesn’t end here. Plans for the future of American Black Belt are still in the making. Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is partnering with Drug Free Long Island, Bikers Against Heroin and Nassau County for a Bike Ride from Syosset/Woodbury Park to TOBAY Beach in recognition of National Overdoes Awareness Day. The Bike Ride will take place on Friday, August 30th with motorcyclists invited to ride from Syosset/Woodbury Community Park down to TOBAY Beach, at which a MARCHING BAND REHEARSES - The Massapequa High School marching special ceremony will be band rehearses music for this year’s ’80s rock-themed show.
