The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from PSEG for the Student Assistance Program (SAP). Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of LICADD’s SAP designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. Robotics Camp that the students were given much freedom to design, build, program and test their robots. That structure allowed them to work in teams and develop their problem-solving skills. One of the highlights of the week was the Battlebots competition in which students built their own robots and tested them against each other in a ring. Lucas Tonello, who will enter ninth grade at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, said he would consider robotics as a possible career. It was his
third year participating in the summer camp. “Here you can be creative with what you build,” he said. “I like building stuff and tinkering and programming.” Massapequa offers robotics as part of seventh- and eighth-grade technology classes along with dedicated courses at the high school. Berner Middle School also has an after-school robotics club in which students participate in the FIRST Lego League competition with other schools on Long Island.

The Power of Positivity I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?
Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2016 General taxes by the August 10th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400, if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.” In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Steps to Choosing the Right Pre-school Kindergarten used to mark a child’s first foray into formal education, but pre-school has now taken up that mantle for many students. Some parents may recall their own pre-school experiences, mostly remembering extended moments of play and more monitored fun inside the school. But as the world of education has become more competitive, and students are required to meet certain standards at even earlier grade levels than before, pre-school has undergone its own transformation.
While parents who hope to enroll their students in pre-school may have to choose between a play- or academic-based curriculum, there are other factors to consider as well. Is proximity to your home important? Some parents prefer that their children’s pre-schools be close to home, while others want a school closer to their office. If your commute to work is long, then keep in mind that children will spend more time at a pre-school close to
home, which can cost more and reduce the amount of time parents and their children spend together. Should the school be faith-based? Religious organizations frequently offer their own faith-based preschool programs. Parents will have to decide if they want a faith-based curriculum for their young children.
Are pre- and post-care services available? A school that has flexible hours may be appealing to some. This enables parents to drop off and pick up children according to their own work schedules or in coordination with school hours for other children in the family. Visit the school and assess the

But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their college applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come: Ask kids to jot down their interests.
Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college
admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great
resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids find activities they can be passionate about for years to come.

The Massapequa School District is proud to announce that Massapequa High School has been named one of America’s Top 500 Public High Schools in annual rankings recently released by Newsweek magazine. The school ranked 401st in the nation, and was one of 21 on Long Island to be included on the list. Schools were ranked based on achievement and college readiness factors including the percentage of students enrolling in a college, a weighted SAT/ ACT composite score, Advanced Placement and International B a c c a l a u r e a t e
performance, student enrollment rates and the ratio of students to fulltime guidance counselors. Massapequa was cited for its 99.2 percent graduation rate, along with having 93 percent of graduates attending college. “We are pleased to be recognized by Newsweek as one of the best high schools in America and one of 21 on Long Island,” said Superintendent Lucille Iconis. “This national recognition reflects the commitment of our entire K-12 faculty, staff and administration, the support of parents, the board of education and the

It offers a vast and challenging curriculum with 22 Advanced Placement courses and 30 additional courses that may be taken for college credit, as well as six world languages and dozens of electives in art, music, business, technology and family and consumer sciences.
Students spent a week getting their hands dirty as the Massapequa School District and Camp Invention partnered for a weeklong science camp at the Ames Campus from August 8thAugust 12th. Camp Invention has been a summer staple in the district for a decade, with lessons that connect science, technology, engineering and innovation. An enthusiastic group of 110 elementary-age students spent the week rotating through five stations where they participated in discovery activities. “They get to explore a variety of different science topics,” said Elizabeth Natke, a retired Massapequa teacher
who directed the camp. “Everything is very handson. There’s a lot of team work involved so it gives them an opportunity to cooperate and try to and solve real-world problems.” One popular class was “I Can Invent.” Students worked in teams to take apart old electronics and toys, and then used the parts to create their own inventions. In “Crickobot,” children built their own robotic crickets fueled by solar cells. “The Lab” had students participating in several experiments such as making slime, while “Epic Park” had them creating cutting-edge designs for an island theme park. “Camp Invention

Games” fostered curiosity and out-of-the-box thinking. Madeline Douglas, a fourth-grader at Unqua Elementary School, said the camp was a fun way to make new friends from other schools in the district. She especially liked learning about solar power. Jason McCauley, a fifth-grader at McKenna Elementary School, enjoyed learning how to use tools and developing his engineering skills. In addition to the teachers, students from Berner Middle School, Ames and Massapequa High School served as counselors to support their children in their scientific endeavors.

Long Island’s newest public school leaders were welcomed and introduced to the area’s seasoned colleagues during SCOPE’S 32nd annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, held at the St. John University’s Oakdale campus on August 11th. The event provided the opportunity for newly appointed superintendents and newly elected school board trustees to mingle and share ideas with fellow educators from school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties. During his introduction and welcome, SCOPE
Executive Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize the many organizations associated with SCOPE and noted that developing the minds of students is an educator’s most important job. “The children we educate today are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said. In addition, the commissioner addressed teacher evaluations, which she said are now being reviewed by educators. “You want evaluations that can help teachers move forward,” she said. New York State Regent Roger Tilles presented his views on the demographic and geographic issues resulting in gaps in education and graduation rates. “Districts are asked to overcome issues that are often beyond our schools,” he said. “During my visits to high-need districts, I have noticed that what brings students to school are the programs we often cut from schools, and I hope we can turn that around.”
