Long Beach International Film Festival On Friday, August 7th, the Long Beach International Film Festival took the concept of “Dinner and a Movie” to a whole new level, adding the spectacular “Taste on the Beach” event to their widely respected Shorts on the Beach series. First, beginning at 5 p.m. – event goers experienced the inaugural Taste On The Beach portion of the night (which was presented by Infiniti of Lynbrook) where foodies and music lovers alike indulged in local Long Beach fare & other top regionally based restaurants’ finest foods, wine, craft beer & cocktails while rubbing elbows with celebrities and renowned Culinary masterminds and

personalities like Steve Carl from Carlyle on the Green, Barret Beyer from FOX TV’s Hells Kitchen, Chef Nicole Roarke of Heneghan’s Tavern, Rob Petrone from Verizon Fios1 TV’s Restaurant Hunter, Danny Gagnon from Bravo TV’s Top Chef & more As people dined, they also enjoyed live musical performances from international recording artist Connell Cruise and reggae superstars Oogee Wawa along with a host of other acts including Mark Newman, American Idol alum Robbie Rosen, Former Miss NY Michelle Medoff, Actress and the Voice contestant Raquel Castro and local favorite Benoir. Then, when the sun went down around 8:45 p.m., visitors were thrilled by the 4th Annual “Shorts on the Beach”; (which was presented by Porsche of South Shore who had several of their hot new rides on display along the boardwalk) the LBIFF’s

Among the many interesting titles that were featured included Director Brooke Wagstaff’s animated film and Award-winning Vimeo Staff Pick “Missing U”; an animated tale about the letter “I” and her perilous adventure in search of her missing “U”. As a Long Island highlight, Director Peter Frizalone’s HBO Project Greenlight Top 200 “Mommy” made its World Premiere begging the question “Do you know who is in your house?” Other films shown included Director Chris Jordan-Bloch’s documentary on an evergrowing world issue “Dryden - The Small Town That Changed the Fracking Game” where the power of community takes on the power of fracking; Director/Producer Stephanie Donnelly’s narrative/comedy “The Cannoli” where a Long Island family dinner turns tragic and a choice must be made between dessert

and family; Director Sarah Menzies’ San Diego Surf Film Festival Best Short winning documentary “Catch It”, which follows Léa Brassy as her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause and she finds serenity in the Arctic surf of Northern Norway; and Croatian Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovi’s World Premiere of “Eye for an Eye”, in which child’s play turns into a showdown of imagination and discipline. This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

During the week-long camp, children National Guard or Army competed in intramural basketball games. Among those on hand were: Coach Ed Reserve. Are you ready for some football? If so, then come to “Family Football Night” at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Tuesday August 25th, at 7:00 p.m. Football fans are sure to enjoy the event which features a collegiate scrimmage of the LIU Post Pioneers. “This is a great event where football fans are close to the action,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto said. ”LIU Post has many talented players and it’s very impressive to watch the team’s knowledgeable coaches, led by Head Coach Bryan Collins, work with the players during a scrimmage. It’s a unique perspective that everyday fans don’t get a chance to see on television.” Admission will be free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring two cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger. The event will be preceded

by a youth clinic, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Players and coaches from LIU Post will instruct youth football players on proper and safe tackling techniques. “The student athletes on the LIU Post football team serve as true role models for the many young players in attendance,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Perhaps one day, these youngsters will also be able to further their academics though athletics.” There will also be a barbeque following the scrimmage where youth players will have an opportunity to speak with the LIU players and coaches and receive autographs. “This scrimmage is always a fun night for the players and I know the team is looking forward to coming to John J, Burns Park in Massapequa for this year’s event,” LIU Post Head Coach Bryan Collins said. “This is an important night for our team as we prepare for the season.” Last season, the Pioneers
