To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows? Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you. At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention. Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about

the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see. First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon. You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,

you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see. Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle. I’ll let you know how tonight’s concert goes. Via Facebook, of course ;)

Massapequa UFSD student Matthew Fisher was honored recently for breaking new ground in career and technical education (CTE). Matthew, who is studying Medical Assisting at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned the 2016 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and career paths that defy conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE programs that prepare them for

nontraditional careers. The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, which provides statewide assistance to CTE institutions that offer nontraditional programs. NET is funded through the New York State Education Department and is committed to preparing students for the workforce through the promotion of gender-neutral educational

strategies and practices. “These students are the future of the American workforce,” said Barry Tech Principal Laurie Harris. “At Barry Tech, it is our goal to teach our students the skills they need for employment and to give them direction for college. But we’re also creating thoughtful, knowledgeable leaders who will contribute to the advancement of equity in the workplace.”

Long Island poets will be honored at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI from September through June. Each Sunday at the Ethical Society’s Sunday morning meeting a poem that was written by a poet who had a connection with Long Island will be read as part of the regular lecture at 11 a.m. Says Ethical Society president Linda Napoli of Mineola, “We want our members and attendees to have a rich experience on Sunday morning, so in addition to a talk on a topic of ethical concerns, we feature music and poetry.” Generally the Sunday morning poems draw from the vast world of poetry but this year the focus will be on Long Island. “Of course, we’ll lead off with Walt Whitman,” says Lyn Dobrin of Westbury who with her husband, Arthur Dobrin, poet and leader emeritus of the Ethical Society,

selected the poems. Dobrin says that in reviewing the potential poems she was delighted to find such rich material. “I guess Whitman is in the Long Island DNA,” she says. Some of the poems selected include David Axelrod’s “Random Beauty,” Margaret Garry Burke’s “Sunflowers,” Stanley Barkan’s “Crossings,” and “In that twilight before sleep,” by Barbara Novack. “We generally try to match the poem with the theme of the speaker or with events of the time,” says Dobrin, “so around Veterans Day we are considering Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan’s ‘Poem #1for all the soldiers.’” Not all the poems will be serious. For some humor Joan Digby’s “Waking the Students,” will be featured around the time college students are taking their final exams and most can

relate to Tony Iovino’s “Where & When?,” a lament about overeating. “What makes that poem of just four short stanzas so interesting is how Iovino moves from humor to musings about the passage of time and aging,” says Dobrin. Inspired Art using varying techniques and materials. Projects included a collage, tote bag and treasure box. Veltre said the goal was to get the children interested in different periods of art in the 19th and 20th centuries. The final week of arts camp also featured a watercolor class, which was held for the second year. Birch Lane art teacher Melinda Wolfe taught the course and showed students various watercolor techniques. They then created their own pieces such as still-life and landscape paintings. “These kids are showing

that they really love to do art,” Wolfe said. “You can see that in their work.” At the end of the week, families were invited to come in and view the artwork completed in both classes, and then the students were able to take their completed pieces home. The five-week Summer Fine Arts Camp featured one- and two-week long TEAM TAKES FIRST - The 10U team, led by Manager Phil Sonzone and coached by courses in art, music and George Corey, Mike Mehm & Chris Horn, shut out Commack South 9-0, taking first theater and was open to in the District 34 Baseball Tournament. Even as the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts program entered its final week, students still took advantage of the opportunity to explore their creativity and develop their artistic talents. The cockpit is visually and audibly interactive and provides a realistic look at the F-35’s performance “flying” both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The F-35 provides economic stability to the U.S. and Allied nations by creating jobs, commerce and security and contributing to the global trade balance. In 2016, the F-35 program has more than 1,250 suppliers in 45 states and Puerto Rico, employs more than 146,000 people (direct and indirect), and generates an economic impact of over $24 billion. As the program reaches full rate production, there will be increase in jobs and economic impact. The F-35 Lightning II is a 5th Generation fighter, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully-fused sensor information and networkenabled operations.

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] recently showcased its F-35 Lightning II mobile cockpit demonstrator to elected officials and leaders in the business community at GKN Aerospace, an important supplier for the F-35 program. GKN Aerospace is a global supplier for the F-35 program, which serves as a cornerstone for global security and creates jobs across the United States. GKN Aerospace produces many component parts for the F-35 Lightning II including the aircraft’s canopy, the electric wiring interconnection system (EWIS) for all variants, the wiring system and electro thermal de-icing system for the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine, composite and metal components and structures for the airframe and engine, and an arresting hook system for the F-35C variant. Healy Beach in Massapequa who all worked together to make a daring rescue of a woman who fell out of her small boat and into a busy boating channel on July 2nd. Thanks to the fast action of this lifeguard team, this potentially life threating event ended on a positive note. The quick and skillful actions of the Lifeguard crew were praised by

BICYCLE RODEO - Nassau County Legislator James D. Kennedy and Senator Michael Venditto recently hosted a Bicycle Rodeo at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. Safety Trainers from the NY Coalition for Transportation Safety set up an obstacle course for the kids and instructed them on proper hand signals as well as general bicycle safety. In addition, all riders had their brakes and tires checked. The event was a huge success with every participant receiving a free bicycle helmet.
