Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their
classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that
many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Ices for Andrea was spearheaded by Joann Centrone along with her sister Diana who honored their mother Andrea, after she lost her courageous battle with breast cancer back in 2007. Chapter 35 Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

Through many years of hard work, and dedication to the beach, John became Assistant Captain in 1990 and was later joined by his son Kim, and his daughter Stacey, who were also ocean

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined celebrity Mike Rowe at Northwell Rink on his new show “Returning the Favor,” while recognizing Bryan Blomquist for his outstanding community service. Mike’s show recognizes the good deeds of others and in turn does something special for them. Bryan Blomquist, President of Island Sled
Hockey, has dedicated much of his time to the organization’s enthusiastic young participants, serving as a role model and acting as a mentor. Under Bryan’s direction, Long Island Sled Hockey fosters, promotes and encourages sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie. Long Island Sled Hockey also focuses on the development and nurturing of positive
attitudes in and outside the Long Island community toward those with physical and/or mental handicapping conditions. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented Bryan with a proclamation declaring July 28th, 2017 to be “Bryan Blomquist Day.” Supervisor Saladino presented a citation to Mike for having such a positive impact on the community.

CHALLENGE COUNCIL WINNERS - In celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouts selling cookies, close to 5,000 Troops participated in the GSUSA Cookie Troop 100 Challenge, which required each Troop to ask 100 new customers to buy Girl Scout Cookies®. M a s s a p e q u a International Little League’s Juniors Tournament team had a very successful run to make it to the NY State semi-final game in Dix Hills. The team won the
District 31 title and the Section 4 West title advancing to the NY State Tournament. In the State Tournament they defeated Syracuse 8-0 and LeGrange 7-0 before running into Ossining and falling to defeat 3-2. Ossining went
on to win the NY State title and go all the way to the Championship game in East Regional where they were defeated by Pennsylvania. Congrats to International on a job well done!
