NETS BASKETBALL CLINICS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino in partnership with the Long Island Nets, recently hosted the first of three Basketball Clinics which took place at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. The clinic, brought together boys and girls ages 6 through 13 to learn the fundamentals of basketball from some of the area’s finest coaches and players. Remaining clinics will take place on Friday, August 23rd at John J. Burns Park, Massapequa and on Friday, September 20th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Both clinics will take place at 6:30pm and will last for 90 minutes. The clinics, which offer limited space, will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have heard anything about Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) you’ve probably heard that is is “more than a regular workout”. Orangetheory is a sciencebacked, technology-tracked, coach-inspired group workout, which is designed to produce results from the inside out. No two classes are alike and members don’t know which kind of class they will be walking into before they arrive. Their coaches are skilled and work with each member of the group to keep them motivated, positive and in the correct form for the workout they are doing. Their classes are designed for people of all fitness levels and members can work out at their own pace. If you are recovering from an injury or orthopedic issue and need

special guidance there is no reason to worry, just tell your coach. They have options for every exercise. One of the most unique parts of OTF is that all members can track their results. Members get hooked up to a heart rate monitor upon arrival to a class and its technology not only measures your heart rate,

but it gathers performance data as well. The workout equipment at each studio is state of the art and the environment is truly unique. The following various membership opportunities are available: Basic Membership, which allows you to sign up for 4 classes/month; Elite Membership, which allows you to sign up for 8 classes/month and Premier Membership, which allows you to sign up for an unlimited amount of classes each month. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

Games, sports, and arts and crafts are among the many daily activities in the Massapequa School District’s summer recreation program, which is attended by hundreds of children from the six elementary schools. Approximately 125 middle school-age students are also participating in the Teen Center program.

The five-week elementary program runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., five days a week. In addition to the camp activities, there are field trips for bowling, laser tag, miniature golf, the movies, the pool and more. There have also been special events at the camps including live games shows and ceramics painting along with the annual

carnival day filled with activities such as bounce houses, dunk tanks, face painting and potato sack races. Each camp is supervised by a certified teacher with support from college assistants and high school counselors, who bring the children to the different activities and ensure they are all having fun.

Mavericks Football Pilot Program In their ongoing effort to make their players as safe as possible, the Massapequa Mustangs Youth Football program has joined the Defend Your Head (DYH) Youth Safety Alliance by investing in ProTech technology for their at the 12-year-old and Senior (13-year-old) Travel teams. If the pilot proves successful, we will look to expand the program further in 2020 and beyond. Bill Cardello, Mustangs Commissioner, explained “As commissioner of the league, it’s my job to ensure that we are continually putting the best and safest brand of youth football on the field each season. This includes ensuring that our coaches are trained to teach the newest and safest blocking and tackling techniques, as well as ensuring our facilities and equipment are the best and safest they can be. With that in mind, our older

travel teams, at the 12 and 13 year old levels, will be wearing ProTech shell’s on their helmets. After seeing the product, I was immediately convinced that this technology can help make our players and our game even safer than they are today.” “We have been very fortunate over the last several to have but 1 or 2 concussions with in our program. This, in large part, is a result of teaching our players proper technique, as well as ensuring our teams are properly equipped. We cannot be complacent or satisfied with that. NETS BASKETBALL CLINICS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino in partnership with the Long Island Nets, recently hosted the first of three Basketball Clinics which took place at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. The clinic, brought together boys and girls ages 6 through 13 to learn the fundamentals of basketball from some of the area’s finest coaches and players. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the Town Board and New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James O’Neil conducted a ceremonial street renaming dedication in honor of fallen NYPD Police Officer Michael Russell, who died on August 2, 1979, in the line of duty, while attempting to arrest an armed assailant who had just shot and killed a civilian. “Officer Russell was loved and respected by residents of New York City as well as the community where he grew up,” said Supervisor Saladino. “To those who had the pleasure to know Michael, it was no surprise that he was able to leave such an indelible mark, both socially and professionally. Officer Russell was a Top Cop in the bravest sense and did not hesitate to take action, even if the situation was perilous.
