Bradstock Set Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be presenting Bradstock XXI, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry that will be taking place on Saturday, August 30th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 31st from noon to 9 p.m. Now in its 21st year, Bradstock is an all-day music festival featuring the best musical acts performing Americana,

bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. Among those who will be performing include Cassandra House, Gerry McKeveney, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, David Amram, Funkin’A, Jelly Band, Falco Brothers and The Electrix. In addition, there will be a

Poetry Stage featuring the area’s finest and most diverse poets and a Folk and Songwriters’ stage featuring the best local musical talent. On July 18th, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., presented a check in the amount of $5,000 to Susan Solomon, Chief Executive Officer, New York Stem Cell Foundation, at a special gathering in East Hampton. The grant will assist the NYSCF in its continuing research into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease using manufactured stem cells. The grant came from part of an anonymous donation that ADRC recently received. This

was the second research study the organization has funded. On June 26, ADRC presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Dr. Irving H. Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola for his study on how the removal of Namenda from the marketplace and the use of its substitute — an extended release formulation — will impact the blood levels of patients with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The New York Stem Cell

Foundation (NYSCF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accelerate cures for major diseases through stem cell research. Soccer Challenge The World Cup may be finished, but local soccer fans now have another event to look forward to. Exciting matchups of premier Northeast college soccer teams will take place in the Town of Oyster Bay, Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced. The Town will host a College Soccer Challenge and Youth Soccer Festival on Sunday, August 17th, at the Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. The event features a game between the NCAA men’s soccer forces from Hofstra and Lafayette. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the teams playing for the right to claim the Supervisor’s Trophy. Last year, Lafayette won a thrilling match on penalty kicks. This year, Hofstra will try and even the score and return the Supervisor’s Trophy to Long Island. “Soccer fans of all ages are sure to enjoy this special event featuring

a matchup of two highly respected collegiate soccer programs,” Councilman Pinto said. Hofstra is led by Head Coach Richard Nuttall, who is entering his 26th season as head coach at Hofstra. Prior to his coaching career at Hofstra, Nuttall was a professional soccer player in England and a member of the Long Island Rough Riders. Last season, Hofstra finished with an overall record of 8-7-3. The Leopards from Lafayette, under the direction of head coach Dennis Bohn, are looking to rebound from a disappointing season in which the team finished with an overall record of 4-6-8. However, Lafayette remains one of the most successful college soccer programs in the Northeast, and had an impressive streak of 12 consecutive winning seasons prior to last year. The action doesn’t stop

there, however, as at 3:30 p.m., the Hofstra Women’s Soccer Team will take the field against Fairleigh Dickinson University. This game will help complete an exciting doubleheader of collegiate soccer. In addition to the outstanding collegiate games, young players will be treated to a Town of Oyster Bay Free Youth Clinic at 2:30 p.m., where kids can practice soccer techniques and enjoy a barbecue with players and coaches. “Soccer is very popular among with the Town of Oyster Bay’s youth and we are very pleased that the Town is presenting this fun day for our residents to enjoy,” Councilman Pinto said. The Councilman noted that admission is free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger.

Make A Wish By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Itâ€™s that special time of year again â€“ well, special to me â€“ three days until my birthday, the so-called â€œreset buttonâ€? that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, seeing them as unnecessary celebrations, just another day on the calendar to cast aside. Of course, there are also those who feel the occasion should be acknowledged as some sort of national holidayâ€Ś Me, I

fall somewhere in between. Itâ€™s certainly nice to receive phone calls and text messages and Facebook greetings from those you seldom talk to otherwise, as well as to take the time to get together with family and close friends to celebrate. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. Itâ€™s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moonâ€Ś and, considering Iâ€™ve been

mistaken for anywhere from 18 to 25 years old, it must be a characteristic thatâ€™s not necessarily apparent to others! We should all take a moment â€“ even if it is, literally, just one moment â€“ each year, on our respective birthdays, to acknowledge the fact that we are each special and important in our own little ways, within our own immediate circles, and that every year is but another opportunity to expand upon that imprint. Stony Brook University broke ground recently on Phase I of the new 759-room student housing facilities and 60,000-square-foot dining center located on Toll Drive. Scheduled to be completed by fall 2016, the new development will offer additional residential options for upperclassman, and bring the total on-campus housing inventory to more than 10,300 beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY. (Phase II is anticipated to start construction in December this year.) The new facility on John S. Toll Drive, will feature two modern buildings. A white sheath of a veil shadows her face in closure Draping over the top of her wide brim hat And crossing at the neck Keeping intact all of her exploits Wrapping her up like a bow Appearance would cause you to think her a Beekeeper But honey would be the last thing to near her fine linen suit Polished nails and shiny shoes Yet her hair appears disheveled under her hat All seems perfectly put together with the exception of her hair Distraught and assaulted to the point of no fix Done up in a bun of morbid chaos Frightening to small children and plants You could expect a small bird to ﬂy out at a moment’s notice All this preparation yet she forgot to do her hair – Maybe because it lies in such close proximity to her brain That neither can be combed, matted or tamed

The summer solstice opens upon her arrival, evaporating the morning’s dew. The rays of sun awaken by her movement, comforting the Earth with her warmth. All the living turn their heads to bask in her warm embrace. The plants mature in her wake, learning the meaning of life. The menacing clouds take over, their footsteps in sync. Like soldiers they march on and on, without pause. They throw spears of light down showing their force, watching for reactions. Some mortals cower in fear, while some dare to stand against it. Like an olive branch extended, tendrils of pinks and purples streak the sky, tearing the blue. Good wins over evil, a predetermined win. Like a spell cast everything lies tranquil, waiting to dance with the stars. Her sudden temper ﬂares, rolling down her back in waves. Her teardrops comes in waterfalls, mingling with the mundane. Fierce is her reign, until scolded by Father Time. Like a child in the corner, she loses her grip. At the end, summers right hand man, sets in a fiery blaze.

Preservation Roundtable historic structures.” The Town purchased the house, along with a second property, in 2008 for $1,927,000. Parts of the structure date to the early colonial period, when John Townsend built the house for his family. It had been John’s father Henry who in 1661 built Oyster Bay’s first grain mill. Following John Townsend’s death in 1705, his home became known as Esther Townsend’s Dwelling House after his widow Esther, an enterprising businesswoman who managed a successful sloop-based trading business, dealing primarily in cider with customers as far away as North Carolina. Townsends continued to hold the property until its sale out of the family in 1929. The Historic Preservation Roundtable includes representatives from the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, Oyster Bay Main Street Association, Oyster Bay Historical Society, Raynham Hall Museum, and private individuals concerned with the historic preservation and economic vitality of the hamlet of Oyster Bay.

(NAPSI)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make life more stressful for those providing the care. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs. Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially. The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities.

It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a prescription due to cost, miss sleep or forget to eat healthy meals. It’s very important for caregivers to recognize their own limits. Here are a few tips to help: • Find out about caregiving resources in your community. • Don’t do it alone. Ask for and accept help. Ask family members to do their share.

• Simplify your life and reduce other sources of stress. Make “to do” lists. • Stay in touch with family and friends. • Join a support group. • Make time to get away and have fun. • Consider home care supportive services.
