For our young adults who will attend college this fall, the first six (6) weeks of freshman year can be a particular vulnerable time due to student expectations and social pressures at the start of the academic year. While many will arrive or commute to campus to learn, experience new friendships, and make memories that will last a lifetime, many young adults will engage in harmful and underage college drinking and also deal with its aftermath. Research shows that students who abstain from drinking often do so because their parents discussed alcohol use and its adverse consequences with them. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition reminds parents to stay involved during these crucial early weeks: • Talk with your young adult about the dangers of harmful underage college drinking—such as the penalties for underage drinking, and how alcohol use can lead to sexual and other violence, as well as academic failure and other adverse consequences; • Reach out periodically and keep the lines of communication open and stay alert for possible alcohol-related problems;

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca invite residents to renew their wedding vows at a group ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, August 18th, which is National Happy Couple’s Day. The special ceremony will take place beach-side at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, beginning at 11 a.m. and will include

Laura L. Fortner
Mrs. Laura L. Fortner, a resident of Massapequa, LI, died July 28, 2021 at LI Veteran’s Home, Stony brook, LI. She was 98 years old. Mrs. Fortner was born on March 24, 1923 in Queens, NY to Louis and Emma (Woller) Lumm. She was a proud veteran of the US Navy WAVES from 1944 to 1945. In addition to caring for her family she was employed by SUNY Farmingdale as Head of Admissions and also served as President of CSEA Union. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Massapequa, LI. Mrs. Fortner was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. in 1987 and her two children Lauren A. Noonan and Robert W. Fortner, Jr. Survivors include her three (3) Grandsons; Patrick A. Noonan, Terence R. Noonan and Kyle C. Noonan (Mark). An American Legion service was held in the afternoon of August 5th and an Order of Eastern Star service was held that evening, Cassiopeia Chapter 453. The Very Reverend Dr. Walter Hillebrand, pastor, Grace church officiated at the funeral service in the church on Friday, August 6th followed by interment with Military Honors in Pinelawn Memorial Park. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

Mrs. Ruth E. Annunziato, a longtime resident of Amityville, LI, died July 8, 202 at Good Samaritan Hospital in W. Islip, LI. She was 98 years old. Mrs. Annunziato was born on May 4, 1923 in LaFayette, Indiana to Frederick and Ruth (Karweick) Teichmann. In addition to caring for her family Mrs. Annunziato was fiercely engaged in “Citizens of the World” organization. Mrs. Annunziato was a member of St. David’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Massapequa, LI. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. David Annunziato, M.D. and her brother Frederic John Teichmann. Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulfillment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations. Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organization, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members.
Besides their ground track, they also have a dual gauge high line which features an elevated track, which runs through the forest. Rider Rules: For the Ground Line track, kids must be able to walk on their own in order to ride. For The high line track, riders must be at least 40” Tall to ride. Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/ or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by!
