Hi there readers! This is Norton von Spudley, flitting in for my mommy, Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, famed columnist and editor extraordinaire {she made me write that}. You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today. From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong! Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny

betta bowl at the local pet store, a mere speck of a fish, I spotted the girl who would come to adopt me. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face. It was love at first sight. Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl. And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse

to budge. Feeding times are another nuisance, as my human still insists on crushing my pellets into bits, forcing me to chase my tail for crumbs before they settle on the bottom, never to be seen again. But alas, I’m just a tiny curmudgeon of a fish, always looking for something to gripe about. Truth is, we are a match made in heaven, both preferring our solitude and possessing a bit of that OCD need to clean up our surroundings constantly. At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast. Ah, the life of a fish. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers. Hope the rest of your summer goes swimmingly.

Free Training Available Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs has been awarded a grant from the New York State Department of Labor to train unemployed workers in Medical Office Administration or Medical Billing Specialist programs at Hunter Business School in Levittown. Upon program completion, Northwell Health and several other employers will interview trainees for entry-level clerical positions that offer opportunities for advancement and career pathways. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay and the Workforce Development Board are committed to bolstering local employment and connecting trained unemployed workers with employers. This new initiative will help unemployed workers acquire skills in the high demand fields of Medical Office Administration and Medical Billing. I thank Hunter Business School for working with us to develop a program that helps put unemployed residents back to work.” The 600-hour Medical Office Administration program offers a blend of classroom and hands-on training. Students learn computer data entry of patient information, patient files, filing systems and records, and billing and coding. They also gain expertise in computerized accounting using QuickBooks. In addition to courses in management and computer applications, students learn anatomy and physiology, health care administration, electronic medical records, insurance theory, and insurance claims management. Participants are trained in how to navigate Medicare, how to respond to medical emergencies, and in understanding healthcare law (e.g., Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, Occupational Safety and Health Act). The Medical Billing

Specialist program is a 180-hour program that prepares students to obtain entry-level employment in medical billing and coding in hospitals, medical insurance companies, and physicians’ offices. Students learn accounts receivable, insurance billing, patient statements, superbills, appointment scheduling, procedure history, posting payments, diagnosis history, hospital rounds record-keeping, and referring doctor information. Program graduates typically obtain entrylevel employment as medical office specialists,

medical file coordinators, medical billing specialists, and patient coordinators in hospitals, clinics, or physicians’ offices. This program is coordinated by the Workforce Development Board (WDB). The Town of Oyster Bay, Town of North Hempstead and City of Glen Cove are proud members of the WDB. Time for Upgrades

Construction is taking place at several buildings throughout the Massapequa School District this summer, continuing work from the facilities bond and Capital Reserve Fund propositions approved by voters in 2014.

Several projects are taking place at Unqua Elementary School, including replacing the floors in the hallways of the original part of the building, which dates to 1952. The tiles and wooden subfloors were

ripped up in the U-shaped section, which has a crawl space below for air ducts. Additional joists and side supports were added, which are being covered by two layers of plywood. New floor tiles will then be installed throughout that section as well as the addition from the mid-1950s, which is on a concrete slab. The south parking lot is being expanded to accommodate approximately 30 more cars. Sidewalks are being replaced leading to the main entrance, and the wood work on the outside of the building is receiving a fresh coat of paint this summer. New windows are being installed at Fairfield Elementary School. Director of Facilities Timothy O’Donnell said every window will be

replaced, including in classrooms, offices and large spaces. Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock added that because the old windows were several decades old, this project will improve energy efficiency in the building and lower heating costs. The new windows preserve the aesthetics of the school, which dates back to 1925. The library media centers are being renovated at both Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School. The rooms have been gutted and will include new floors, furniture and casework. At Berner, the circulation desk is being moved to the back of the room adjacent to the library media specialist office. The high school library will include new rooms created by glass partitions for classes to

meet. Both libraries will include state-of-the-art technology to support instruction. The summer projects follow a year in which several other projects were completed including the installation of new fire alarms and doors at the nine schools, and the installation of turf fields at Berner. “Thanks to the support of the community, we continue to make upgrades that provide

our students and staff with safe and up-to-date facilities,” Mr. Adcock said. “It is necessary for us to make improvements to transform our buildings, some of which are more than 90 years old, into modern learning environments.” Photo courtesy of: Massapequa School District
