Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was recently joined by Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker and members of the Plainview, Bethpage, Hicksville, Massapequa, and Roslyn Water Districts to announce that grant funding in the amount of $1.5 Million is being made available to assist water districts in providing potable drinking water to their customers free of contamination from emerging contaminants such as 1,4 Dioxane and PFO/ PFOA’s (perfluorooctanoic acid). The water suppliers are tasked with constructing expensive water treatment facilities to meet Federal, State, and local drinking water standards specific to removing these emerging contaminants. Grants in the amount of up to $50,000 will be made available to water suppliers in Nassau County to assist with costs associated with treatment and removal of contaminants. These tasks could include, but not be limited to: · Administration and oversight of distribution of grant funds to ensure compliance with ARP/US Treasury guidelines · Study, planning/design of emerging contamination occurring within the water district · Purchase of equipment, materials and supplies to advance to removal of emerging contamination from the water supply of the district · Installation of equipment to advance removal of emerging contamination from the water supply · Purchase of support equipment such as Information Technology (IT) related to systems integral to treatment process within the district’s distribution system · Development of operations manuals/ guidelines/materials for use by water supplier personnel
specifically pointed to the removal of emerging contamination · Maintenance activities of systems already on-line and removing emerging contamination. Such activities could include the removal of spent materials used in the treatment of contamination, or the
purchase of new materials to be used in the treatment process, such as Activated Carbon. · Defray the cost of laboratory testing for emerging contaminants “Nassau County is committed to providing communities with the resources they need to make
critical upgrades to their water systems. By assisting water districts with these important infrastructure improvements, we will ensure cleaner water for residents while preventing costs from being passed onto ratepayers,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

Benefits Of Leisure Activities Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers
behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. Attention Renters & Landlords: Apply Today for Grants Provided by Congress to the Town of Oyster Bay The Town of Oyster Bay was the recent recipient of $16 million in Federal funds to assist renters facing economic hardships and housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, designed to help renters facing difficulty in paying their rent and utilities/ home energy costs, is being administered by the Long Island Housing
Partnership and the official submission period has now opened. Qualifying residents can submit an application now through August 20th by visiting w w w. o y s t e r b a y t o w n . com/rentalassistance and following the links. Supervisor Saladino stated, “These Federal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents
recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.” The program is designed to assist Town
residents with current and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits. Both tenants and landlords may apply and both will be requested to participate. Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 12 months of payments, with an additional 3 months
if necessary to ensure housing stability, and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted. To be eligible, a household must meet the following qualifications: • Be renting in the Town of Oyster Bay as a primary residence (including all

Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Awards 10 Scholarships Continued From 4 - recently awarded ten new scholarships valued at over $11,000. The scholarships were provided to those who are financiallychallenged so that they too can access Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism’s programs. These recent scholarships were awarded to individuals on the Autism Spectrum ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. They are being used for classes and activities in the Children’s Breakfast Club, Friday Night Social Scene, Culinary Connections, Teen Zumba, Adult Baking, Teen Baking, Teen Technology, Teen Painting, among others. Family Center for Autism’s scholarship funds are generated through private donations and enable the organization to offer scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of its programs. Since its inception in 2015, the program has
awarded approximately 250 scholarships valued at over $250,000. Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed
four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of
autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.” According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not
break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.
