Walsh Invites Scouts To Help Reduce Water Pollution Through New Environmental Program To help reduce water pollution in our town, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites Scouts to participate in the Town’s new Strom Drain Medallion Marker Program. This program involves the placement of green medallions, with the slogan “only rain in the drain” onto the face of Town storm drain covers, thus reminding residents how critical it is for the safety of our waterways that only rain pass through curbside storm drains. “As water flows from outdoor surfaces like streets, parking lots, and driveways, it enters curbside storm drains that eventually discharge directly into our waterways. There is no treatment process before this water

reaches a river, lake, or other water body, so any litter that comes in contact with it is transported along with the clean water,” Councilwoman Walsh said. “Contaminants are then able to enter into the Long Island Sound, South Shore Bay, and other bodies of water where swimming and boating take place. Therefore, it is vitally important for our water quality and environmental state that these contaminants never enter our waterways, which is why the Town launched this educational initiative.” The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources will provide volunteers all necessary supplies, including the medallion,

adhesive glue to attach the medallion to the storm drain, a map of storm drain locations that need a medallion, and safety instructions. Scouts can choose to place medallions in their local community or be assigned a location in the Town of Oyster Bay. Spring and Summer offer the best weather for this initiative. MHS Graduating Seniors Honored By Massapequa Elks & MTAC Two Massapequa High School 2022 graduating seniors, Alyssa Papasodero and Anthony Pereira, were recently awarded a $250 scholarship each from the Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162 for their work to prevent youth substance use in the Massapequas. Members of Massapequa Takes Action Coalition also recognized the graduates for helping youth navigate

healthy decisions in the Massapequas. The Elks scholarship and MTAC Recognition Award are given annually to outstanding Massapequa High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club leaders who go above and beyond their volunteerism to prevent youth drug use and destructive decision making.

VETERANS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - VETERAN VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR - Town of Oyster Bay’s Veteran Volunteers of the Year were Jim Mott Recipients of the Town’s Veterans Lifetime Achievement (second photo, center) and John Falbo (third photo, center). Award were Padric “Pat” Nugent (center) and Matthew Schmidt (not pictured). Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues on the Town Board to honor veterans and members of the United States Armed Forces at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Salute to America at TOBAY Beach. Special recognition was given to the recipients of the Veteran’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Veteran Volunteer of the Year Award. “All four of this year’s honorees have involved themselves in numerous veteran activities and events and perform many

diverse services on behalf of America’s fighting men and women,” said Supervisor Saladino. “They are hometown heroes and role models, and are truly worthy of tonight’s honor. Padric Nugent, of Massapequa, is a United States Army Veterans and now retired 20-year

Army Reserve Sergeant who spent 25 years as an NYPD Detective. He is a 3-year Commander of American Legion Post 1066 in Massapequa, where his work ethic and acumen were instrumental in the success of countless initiatives that benefitted our community and our many veterans. He is also a member of AMVETS Post 88 in Massapequa, a Life Member of Elks 2161, the Knights of Columbus Memorare Council and the NYPD Honor League. Matthew Schmidt, of Massapequa, is a United

Massapequa Child Study Students Hosting Preschool Program Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents, hosted by students in child study courses. The preschool is supervised by child study program director Anna Fierro-Gregg. The preschool program will begin in early December and will end next June. Two sessions are being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each approximately 80 minutes. Children must attend both

days of the session chosen. To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3 (as of Dec. 6) and 5 (not attending kindergarten) and toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited and selection will be by lottery drawing with currently enrolled families and Massapequa residents receiving priority. Families must provide transportation to and from Massapequa High School. Ms. Fierro-Gregg said that the high school students working as “teachers” with the preschool program are enrolled in either

the parenting and child development course or college-level child study class. Students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. The registration deadline is Sept. 30. Ms. Fierro-Gregg will reply to all successfully received applications within a week. Notice of acceptance into the program will be emailed by Oct. 14. States Army Veteran, becoming a part the 411th Civil Affairs Battalion Special Operations Unite and serving in Sadr City, Baghdad, Iraq in March 2003 to April 2004. He was awarded numerous medals for his time in the combat zone and was honorably discharged with the Rank of Sergeant. Matthew joined the NYPD in 2001 and is a 9/11 first responder who worked at Ground Zero, later joining the NCPD working in the 8th Precinct. Honored as the 2022 Town of Oyster Bay’s Veteran

He also performs “Buddy Checks” to make sure his fellow veterans are doing well. Also in attendance was Nassau County Legislator Steven Rhoads, Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy and New York State Senator Alexis Weik.

Massapequa Graduates A Talented And Kind Class The 524 graduates of Massapequa High School, clad in their blue caps and gowns, sat right next to each other at Hofstra University’s Mack arena, a sign that normalcy had returned for a class that experienced anything but that during the last three years. The evening ceremony on June 17 was back at the normal venue, after families witnessed graduation from their cars in the Tobay Beach parking lot in 2020, followed by a socially distanced ceremony at Hofstra’s outdoor stadium last year. Principal Barbara Lowell said that the goal was to give the Class of 2022 as typical a senior year as possible, and that was mostly achieved. Herself a graduate of Massapequa High School 30 years ago, Ms. Lowell wants them to someday look back on their senior year with joy and fondness. This year’s graduates were the first to attend Massapequa’s full-day kindergarten program. The last few years were filled with twists and turns, and ups and downs, but Ms. Lowell said the graduates will be remembered for closing out their 13 years of school with courage,

grace and success. “It is my honor to see them today as mature adults,” said Ms. Lowell, who first met this class in seventh grade when she was executive assistant to the principal at Berner Middle School. Ms. Lowell recognized several members of the graduating class who will be joining the armed forces or enrolling at a military academy after high school. They received large applause for their anticipated service to the United States. Valedictorian Matt McAuley, who will attend Cornell University, reflected on his educational journey in Massapequa, all the way back to kindergarten with a teacher whose last name was just slightly different – Mrs. McCauley. That was where he learned the most important lessons, not to eat glue or run with scissors. His Magnet program teacher, Ms. Natke, reminded him that a good day starts the night before and his German teacher, Frau Kahn, imparted that learning can be both challenging and enjoyable. From his wrestling coaches, the advice was to be better today than yesterday.

“Your measure of success should not be gauged by whether you are better than others, but by whether you are working your hardest to improve and to reach your goals every single day,” Matt said. Salutatorian Erin Goldrick, who is off to Providence College, spoke about the change that comes with graduating high school. The past three years have taught the entire class that sometimes change is not up to them, but “we must rise to the occasion in order to face them,” she said. Erin reminded her fellow graduates that leaving high school is not a loss, but rather an opportunity to use all of the lessons and memories to build an even brighter future. Hampton Classic Horse Show To Host FEI CSI 5* And 2* Competitions

The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the country’s most prestigious hunter-jumper horse shows, will unveil new state-of-the-art all-weather footing in its Grand Prix Ring and a new schedule with FEI CSI 5* and 2* competitions when it returns for its 46th edition, August 28-September 4. The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions. “We are truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us

to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.” The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is

overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha. “I think this is fantastic

news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five Star status plus its new footing that has proven at

Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the world.” Ultra-Competition arenas are an example of the most extremely fine-tuned riding surfaces. Utilizing lab measurements, coupled with comparisons in the iEquiTek database, formulae are developed to improve certain aspects of the peak performance. The speeds and heights of CSI 5* competitions in general make for a narrow aperture of what is acceptable, even in the best of conditions. CSI 5* competitions may be held in the rain, yet still demand 5* levels of performance. Bill Hawe, from iEquiTek said, “The Hampton Classic is to be commended for its all-in commitment to advancing the state-of-theart for performance, safety and horse welfare. This helps change the sport

for the better. We are very excited to partner with the Hampton Classic on this project.” The Grand Prix Ring is the centerpiece of the Classic’s six show rings. Longines is the Official Timekeeper for the Hampton Classic which will also be adding new divisions such as Low Adult and Children’s Jumpers, Low Adult and Children’s Hunters and 3’6” High Performance Hunters. Families without accommodation near a hospital can endure long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings left at home and for some, no place to sleep. They’re far from family and friends who give them support. However, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro, a 501c3 non-proﬁt organization, keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love. The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry. Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.” RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened. Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children. The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital

care. RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day. Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families. Classes New And Old Enlighten Young Massapequa Artists play boomwhackers, drums and xylophones. For older students, some new music courses included introduction to songwriting and music recording technology. Additions to visual arts were mosaic art, tie-dye crafts and a revamped jewelry design class. Incoming sixth grader Luci Bernstein signed up for the songwriting course and said it gave her insight on how to put lyrics and music together. She even got to write an original song, “Brady,” about her dog. She was one of the students who signed up for multiple camps, also taking the iPad Claymation class. The mosaic art class allowed students to create original pieces using a variety of materials such as beans, gems and even Scrabble letters. The projects started out simple, using pictures cut out from magazines to make landscapes, before getting more complex, like making gem-covered flower pots. “It’s a new kind of art that I’ve never seen before,” said sixth grader Lily McHugh.

“It’s nice to try something else.” In the musical theater classes, students worked on their own productions complete with songs and choreography. Sixth grader Colin Canner and seventh grader Reilly Tranchina took part in the camp for the first time and said they learned how to be more confident on stage and how to project to the audience. “I love dancing and singing, I just love it all,” Colin said of the experience. Sixth grader Sophia Gentile took part in the camp for the first time last year, so this year she was able to build upon the acting, dancing and singing techniques that she previously learned. Important to the Summer Fine Arts Camp are the high school students assistants, who support the teachers with their lessons and provide personalized support. Whether it is helping a child with an art project or teaching them the notes on an instrument, their presence is what makes the camp a valued learning experience.

Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District “I like helping out the kids and seeing how they progress,” 10th grade Emily McVey said, a music student assistant. “In just two weeks, they’ve gotten so much better.” In the beginner music classes for students entering fourth grade, those children are getting a head start on the instruments they will be playing for the first time with the school band or

orchestra. Emily noted that they have to teach them the very basics, such as putting the instrument together, holding it properly and playing basic notes. Emily and fellow student assistant Cormac Hale, entering 11th grade, were both students in the summer music program when they were in elementary school, so they know how important a role they play.

“Looking at these kids’ faces, I can picture myself,” said Cormac, who plays the viola. “It’s great seeing them start to love the instrument as much as I do now. With these camps, we can give them a lot of one-on-one help, so it really benefits them.” Each Friday features a student showcase with an art display and music and theater performances.

More than 500 Massapequa students are enjoying art, music or theater – and in many cases a combination of those three – at the annual Summer Fine Arts Camp. The five-week program, in partnership with Nassau BOCES, is held at Massapequa High School from July 5 to Aug. 5. Coordinator Jessica Wyman said that 503 students, ranging from incoming first graders to high school seniors, have signed up for at least one camp. There are one-week and two-week classes in instrumental music, visual arts and musical theater led by certified teachers and high school student assistants. In addition to many popular courses from years past, there are new topics in the program. The first week featured rhythm rockers, a percussion-based class for students entering grades 1-3. Ms. Wyman said that most classes are for grades 4 and up, so this was a way to expand the camp to younger children. It went over well, as an enthusiastic group of students learned how to
