Athletic facilities in the Massapequa School District are busy this summer, as hundreds of children are participating in the popular sports camp program. The camps began the last week of June and run through early August, with offerings in more than a dozen sports. Camps are led by district coaches with support from current and former Massapequa High School athletes. Many children play their respective sport in a community league and are looking to improve their skills as they get ready to try out for middle school or high school teams. Others are learning a sport for the first time, and the coaches cater instruction to meet the skill level of each

are very skilled and have achieved All-State rankings or higher. Erin Townsend, who is entering fifth grade at Lockhart Elementary School, runs track with a local league. She said her favorite event to learn at the camp was the long jump because it incorporates both running and jumping.

“I wanted to practice this summer and I want to get better because I plan to do this for a while,” she said. “I want to run track in middle school and high school. The counselors go over everything you would need to know for a track meet.” Incoming senior Lauren Utz was one of the counselors at the softball camp at Berner Middle School. The varsity

athlete passed along her knowledge to the next generation of high school players. “The coaches have taught me so much,” Lauren said. “I want to teach the children what I’ve learned as a way of giving back to the community.” Added assistant varsity coach Christina Castellani, “It was nice to see the progression the

children had in just five days of camp,” she said. “They learned something new every day.” Michael LaBella and Phil Soman hosted a wrestling camp at the high school, with support from varsity wrestlers. We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. Teacher Earns Fellowship

Massapequa High School teacher Richard McNeil was awarded a 2018 James Madison Memorial Fellowship. He was one of 52 teachers from across the country to receive the financial award from the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. Mr. McNeil has been a special education social studies teacher in Massapequa for 11 years, including four years with the Wing program, which offers small-class settings and additional guidance for students. He teaches 10thgrade global history, 11thgrade U.S. history and 12th-grade economics and

government. Additionally, he has served as adviser for the last eight years to the Model U.N. and the Military History Club, in which students have raised money for the needy, created care packages and collected books for the troops. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of Mr. McNeil’s course of study toward a master’s degree. The program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution. He will pursue a degree in government and politics

at St. John’s University with a major in American government and minor in comparative politics, and will also be required to complete the summer 2019 semester at Georgetown University. The fellowship is funded by income from a trust fund in the Treasury of the United States and from additional private gifts, corporate contributions and foundation grants. The award is intended to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, to strengthen their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government. “The Madison Fellowship Foundation requires that I complete five years as a U.S. history teacher, and I am more than happy to meet that requirement,” Mr. McNeil said. “My goal in acquiring the fellowship has always been so that I may pass on a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution to my students.
