Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The fields and gymnasiums in the Massapequa School District are full of activity this summer as hundreds of children are participating in the annual Sports Camp. There are 16 different programs offered this year for boys and girls including baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, speed and agility training, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The four-week baseball camp at Massapequa High School, for children ages 7-13 averages more than 100 daily participants working with varsity coach Tom Sheedy, assistant coach Chris Cafiero and current and former high school players. Students practice different baseball skills as they rotate through stations, working on their bunting, fielding, hitting, pitching, running and throwing. Coach Sheedy said that the goal is for children to

have fun, get exercise and improve their baseball abilities. The high school players make it exciting for the youngsters with different competitions like a homerun derby and relay races. “All of the counselors were campers at one point, and they remember how special camp was for them,” he said. “They want give back to the program.” More than 40 girls, entering grades 4-8, took part in the field hockey camp at Berner Middle School Stadium during the third week of July. Coach Melodee Ahrens, her assistant coaches Nicole Scoca and Nicole Sicitella, and former and current players from the varsity team worked with participants on skills such as dribbling, passing and sweeping. Whether they play for a school team or a travel team, Coach Ahrens said the goal is to help the girls bring their field hockey play to the next level and to build their

confidence. Football camp was held on the Massapequa High School field from July 1519 for students entering kindergarten through eighth grade. Children were split into groups based on age, and traveled from station to station where they

participated in drills led by high school football players. Coach Kevin Shippos said he wanted children to learn the game in a safe setting while having fun, too. He added this year’s motto was “One family” to emphasize that even though the camp featured students from

elementary to high school with different skill levels, they were all there together as Massapequa Chiefs. Berner Middle School students Michael Dietrich attended football camp for the third time and said he aspires to play in high school. He liked the format of the

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. After six years in elementary school, 518 now former fifth graders from the Massapequa School District are ready for the next step. Berner Middle School awaits the students, who were celebrated for their achievements at elementary moving up ceremonies from June 20 to 25. From learning to read, write, add and subtract in kindergarten, to completing research projects and engineering challenges as fifth graders, the students have grown by leaps and bounds during their elementary years. Principals recognized that remarkable growth in their speeches and also highlighted the exemplary character of this group of students, who comprise Massapequa High School’s graduating Class of 2026. Fairfield Elementary School fifth grader

Cassidy Benito said that she and her classmates have learned since kindergarten about the importance character. McKenna Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry told students that the secret to their success was working together, and encouraged them to enter middle school with that same spirit of teamwork. East Lake Elementary School Assistant Principal Mary Velte did a little math, noting that it was 2,221 days from kindergarten orientation to the fifth grade moving up ceremony. She said that herself, Principal Thomas McKillop and the entire faculty and staff were so proud of their accomplishments during that time. Lockhart Elementary School student Alex Bartolo noted the “amazing journey” he

and his classmates have been on for the last six years, making hundreds of memories. They will now carry their long-lasting friendships to Berner. Superintendent Lucille Iconis noted that the backdrop on each stage included six banners, one for each elementary school, connected by a curved blue line to symbolize the schools coming together to form one graduating class. She asked the students to thank their teachers and family members who have supported them. The ceremonies featured awards presentations, musical selections and photo slideshows. It also marked the last moving up programs for Lockhart Principal Stephen Scarallo and Fairfield Principal Lori Dano, who are both retiring.

An Internet Safety Lesson To close out the school year, fourth graders in Erin Rohan’s class at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about digital citizenship. Ms. Rohan and technology learning coach Vickie

Ahearn talked to students about the digital footprint they leave behind whenever they post online. Children also learned how to give constructive feedback when commenting on another person’s post, such as blog or Flipgrid video.

Using Pear Deck, students shared their thoughts on digital citizenship. The answers appeared on the SmartBoard, which prompted class discussions about Internet safety.
