So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reﬂection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Shoes for All Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently donated 300 pairs of shoes to veterans at the Veterans Stand Down event at the American Legion Post 390, 160 Marvin Avenue in Hempstead. The event allowed veterans and their famlies to pick out 300 pairs of shoes to help them in their time of need.

“We were grateful to be able to help out these veterans who gave of themselves for our freedom...” Said Dr. Mary Carlson DPM, founder of Shoes For All. “...it is a great opportunity to give something they need back to them.” The shoes were collected at recent donation events. “The volunteers and donors don’t always get to see the end result of how their work and donations really affect

Recovery Seminars The South Shore Recovery Coalition is providing free seminars in Nassau and Suffolk County for homeowners that may have been underpaid by the National Flood Insurance Plan. In August, the South Shore Recovery Coalition will be holding meetings in the community on how to MAXIMIZE your ﬂood claim and how to NAVIGATE the many issues that may arise if you reopen your NFIP claim.

New York is experiencing a blood shortage with the summer vacation season challenging donor response. However, hospital and patient needs remain the same with a steady need for all blood types and platelets. This makes participation in the Town of Oyster Bay’s upcoming blood drive, slated for Thursday, August 6th, all the more urgent. Long Island Blood Services cannot meet its vital, lifesaving mission without efforts such as the Town’s bi-annual blood drive. We appeal to all those eligible to participate. If you have family members or friends who are willing to donate, please ask them to also support our effort. Blood banks need to be prepared 365 days a year. That is why people should always donate whenever they can. Donating is quick and easy and is an entirely safe procedure. All materials used during

the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. There is no danger of contracting any disease, including AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures an equivalent amount in 24 hours. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of three different people. The locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place, Syosset (7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.) and Hicksville Athletic Center – 167 Broadway/Route 107, Hicksville (2:30 p.m.

In order to qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. All blood types are needed, especially O positive and O negative. Refreshments will be provided for all who donate. In addition, each time someone makes a donation, they earn advantage points redeemable for a wide variety of gifts, gift cards, or other merchandise. Fair Set to Take Place The organizing committee of Freedom Fairs has put together a community-themed Fair slated to take place at the Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, July 30th through August 2nd. The Fair is put together in conjunction with

the Long Island Teen Challenge International (LITCI), Tutor Central Inc., Eminent Events LLC, and key members of Community Outreach at the Commissioner of Police office. The Fair will feature over 20 different types of

amusement rides, carnival games, food and craft vendors, family-themed magicians and illusionists, jugglers, contortionists and balloon artists, :and live music and bands. The plan is to have something for all ages, particularly focused on families in the

community. The fair is expected to receive several thousand visitors during its five day duration, and we look forward to having everyone come in and participate and have a good time while we celebrate our community. Admission is free;
