HOCKEY HOUNDS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN! - On Sunday, July 11, 2021, the Hockey Hounds won the Dek Superstars Squirt A Division Championship for the second season in a row. They were down two goals against the Honey Badgers and ended up scoring three goals in the final seven minutes of the game. The Championship game was played at Dek Superstars in Massapequa.

Attention Renters & Landlords: Apply Today for Grants Provided by Congress to the Town of Oyster Bay

The Town of Oyster Bay was the recent recipient of $16 million in Federal funds to assist renters facing economic hardships and housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, designed to help renters facing difficulty in paying their rent and utilities/ home energy costs, is being administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership and the official submission period has now opened. Qualifying residents can submit an application now through August 20th by visiting w w w. o y s t e r b a y t o w n . com/rentalassistance and following the links. Supervisor Saladino stated, “These Federal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and

ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.” The program is designed to assist Town residents with current and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits. Both tenants and landlords may apply and both will be requested to participate. Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 12 months of payments, with an additional 3 months if necessary to ensure housing stability, and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted. To be eligible, a household must meet the following qualifications: • Be renting in the Town of Oyster Bay as a primary residence (including all

Villages but excluding the City of Glen Cove); • Show that one or more individuals within the household has either qualified for unemployment benefits, experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or experienced other financial hardship during or due to the COVID-19 pandemic; • Demonstrate that the household is at risk of homelessness or housing instability; and • Have household income at or below 80% of the HUD area median income based on calendar year 2020 or current projected 2021 income. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand and the Town Board recently announced that the Town will partner with Team Boomer of the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis to host a shoe collection drive. Residents are invited to donate any type of shoe in good condition at one of the following DropOff Locations: Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage), and the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S. Broadway, Hicksville). “The Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic

Fibrosis is responsible for lifesaving work in our community. Not only does the organization fund some of the most talented scientists and researchers, who every day come closer to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, but they also provide critical resources and services for individuals currently living with Cystic Fibrosis,” said Councilman Hand. “All proceeds from this shoe collection drive will go directly to the foundation as they work toward their mission of heightening awareness, education and quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis, while also providing financial support to research aimed at finding a cure.” The Town’s Collection

As part of his visit, Senator Brooks also spent time assisting with the vital work of L.I. Cares, stacking shelves and putting together care packages for customers who came through. L.I. Cares was founded in 1980 by singersongwriter and activist Harry Chaplin to assist Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations. In the 40 years since its founding, it has done that and more, working tirelessly to help countless Long Islanders every year. L.I. Cares distributes tens of millions of pounds of food and supplies annually to those in need. The life-saving work of this organization has resulted

in the distribution of more than 1.4 million meals, helping more than 230,000 Long Island residents feed themselves and their families. “Seeing first-hand the work that L.I. Cares does day in and day out was a sobering experience,” said Senator Brooks. “It is easy to look past problems when you are fortunate enough not to experience them yourself, but seeing the extent to which food insecurity and hunger hurts so many in our community made clear how serious of an issue

New Study Shows Transcendental Meditation Effective For Reducing Veterans’ Stress Continued From 14 TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating

a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment. “This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,”

said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study coinvestigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy

will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity

through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.
