Inspiration 101 That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free ﬂow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner. There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a ﬂaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to ﬂuctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.

Magnet students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District joined the likes of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison and other famous inventors as they participated in the Invention Convention. Fifth-graders had to come up with an idea for an invention, then present it for their classmates, parents and teacher, Jennifer Tand. The students were tasked

with creating a product to solve an everyday problem. Among the ideas were the Pringles Pusher to get the chips from the bottom of the can, a robot butler and a special eraser for dry erase board. As part of the project, students had to conduct surveys of potential customers, build prototypes of their inventions and create and videotape commercials to market their products.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will participate in Long Island Cares’ School Supply Drive. The drive, which takes place during the months of July and August, collects new and gently used school supplies for disadvantaged students. “Children are our most precious resource and together we can help make the beginning of the school year a positive experience

for Long Island’s students,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The most needed school supplies are: new backpacks, new lunch boxes, binders, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil cases, construction paper, foreign language dictionaries, dictionaries, loose leaf paper, printer paper, rulers, crayons, markers, colored

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. Ms. Gelfer previously worked in the East Meadow School District, where she was a high school orchestra teacher

The experienced cellist served on the Executive Board for the Long Island String Festival Association and has worked with the Nassau County Music Educators Association as an orchestra chairperson. She is also the executive director of Brookhaven Art & Music, an organization that provides summer music programs for students on the east end of Long Island. “I couldn’t be more honored to join the Massapequa community and I’m excited to work with the teachers, staff, students and parents who are so passionate and enthusiastic about music and art,” Ms. Gelfer said. “I look forward to continuing the fine tradition of the arts here in Massapequa.”

values as they move on to middle school. Kindness was the focus of Birch Lane Elementary School’s moving up ceremony. Fifth-grader Victoria Klein spoke about the kindness tree that was put up in the lobby, in which paper leaves were added to acknowledge good deeds performed by students. “I really believe this school has helped make me into the person I am today,” she said, “and will ultimately help my future and the way I look at life. So, I give all my thanks to this wonderful school and everyone in it for all it has taught me.” Fairfield Elementary School fifth-grader Kaelah Henry recounted how many lessons not only benefitted her academically but made her a better person. When her first-grade class raised baby chicks for a few weeks, she learned to be more mature and caring. Circus arts activities in fifth-grade taught her perseverance. “All of my teachers have taught me the significance of being kind, honest and courageous,” she said. “They have inﬂuenced all of us with their actions and their character.” Students were able to celebrate their elementary years by looking back upon their many memories.

The fifth-grade parent committee at Lockhart Elementary School created a photo slideshow for the moving up ceremony. Recognition included the President’s Award for Educational Achievement and Educational Excellence, New York State Comptroller Award and Triple C Award, as well as several school-specific awards. Musical performances reﬂected the past and future while embracing tradition. Unqua students performed “How Do We Say Goodbye?” while Lockhart students sang “Don’t Stop Believing.” Birch Lane’s fifth-graders recited the school song, Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis presented her blueprint for success, with advice such as “believe when others are doubting,” “listen while others are talking” and “persist while others are quitting,” among other tips. She spoke about the opportunities they will have in middle school such as learning a world language, joining one or more of approximately 30 clubs and exercising in the fitness center. “Bottom line is that you’ll be able to become more independent and follow your interests,” she said. “There’s something for everyone.”

The creativity is ﬂowing at Massapequa High School where several hundred students are participating in the Summer Fine Arts Camp, which features courses in art, music and theater. The program brings students from the district’s nine schools together. Summer Fine Arts Coordinator Jessica Wyman said children participate for a variety of reasons including to improve their abilities or just have fun. Many will take a different course each week during the five-week camp. “Students can have a variety of experiences in the fine and performing arts,” Ms. Wyman said. “That’s the appeal of this program.” All classes are taught by current or former Massapequa teachers, who are supported by about 20 high school student assistants. Beginner instrumental music classes are open to incoming fourthgraders who will be playing in the band or orchestra for the first time, giving them a head start for the new school year. Advanced instrumental courses are for students who have at least a year of experience. Specialized music classes throughout the summer include jazz band,

acoustic guitar and Celtic fiddling. One of the most popular art classes is the iPad Claymation course, which merges traditional and digital art skills. Students create story characters out of clay, and use other art supplies to make sets and props. Working in groups of three or four, they create their stop animation movies on iPads. Morgan Rezza, who will be entering fifth grade, said she did some basic stop animation in art classes at East Lake Elementary School, and wanted the chance to further explore. She liked having three hours a day to work, which allowed her group to steadily progress on their movie about animals ordering ice cream and then having a food fight. A 3D art class expanded to two weeks this year. In the first half, students used clay to make functional art such as candleholders, cups, napkin holders and spoon and chopsticks rests, and fun projects like animals hatching out of eggs. The second half was devoted to glazing and painting. Teacher Paul Leone led demonstrations on different techniques. The theme was “Reuse,

Reduce, Recycle” in the drawing and painting class. Participants took books that would have been bound for the trash and transformed them into pieces of art using collage, rubberstamping and watercolor paint techniques. “I want the students to learn about different artists and different mediums,” said teacher Ellen Cervone. “Most of all, I want them to try something new and have fun.” Musical theater classes included a session for students entering grades 3-5, and another for incoming middle schoolers. Young actors learned songs from a variety of Broadway shows along with the choreography. “I like it because we get to perform on stage at the end,” said incoming seventh-grader Madison Grossfeld, referring to the culminating show for families. She and sixth-grader Sofia Maran said they signed up for the theater classes to improve their skills so they can audition for future school plays. “I want the students to be more confident on stage,” said musical director Katie Tauches. “It will make them better performers.”

The Massapequa High School Class of 2025 will come together for the first time in September as the students begin a threeyear stop at Berner Middle School. The district’s six elementary schools hosted moving up ceremonies during the week of June 18th, as approximately 500 fifth-graders closed out the first part of their educational journeys. Programs included musical performances, awards presentations, student reﬂections, tributes to parents, farewell remarks and words of wisdom from administrators. “Have faith in yourselves and work hard,” McKenna Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry said to her graduates. “Simply wake up each day and try your best.” “Remember to be true to yourself, laugh at the silly stuff and always do what makes you happy,” noted Unqua Elementary School Principal Deanna Catapano. East Lake Elementary School Assistant Principal Mary Velte reminded students of the qualities mentioned in the book “Wonder” — courage, kindness, friendship and character — and asked them to embrace those

is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique way while also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Supervisor Saladino commended the teams
