They Will Surf Again 100 People Living with Paralysis Will Surf at Rockaway Beach on Saturday, July 27, 2019. Life Rolls On presents, “They Will Surf Again,” its signature quality of life program for people with disabilities. The event is free for adaptive athletes and their families, and takes place at the beach on Beach 67th St. in Rockaway Beach. Participants are welcomed at 8:30 am, and the Adaptive Surf Clinic goes from 9:00

am to 4:00 pm. Registration is required. Founded by world champion quadriplegic surfer Jesse Billauer, Life Rolls On began in 2001 in Santa Monica CA, and now presents an annual tour of 12 events on the West Coast, Gulf Coast, and East Coast. Each “They Will Surf Again” event attracts 100 adaptive surfers, 400 volunteers, and hundreds of cheering supporters.

Run, walk, spin and hop are all actions encouraged in the new movement pathway at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. It was created in partnership with the PTA as a way of encouraging exercise and building strength. The movement pathway is located behind the school, adjacent to the playground, and gives students another activity during recess. It begins with a hopscotch board and has several twists and turns before reaching the end. Students can follow straight, curved and zig zag lines, hop five times each on their right and left feet, and do jumping jacks. At one point they crab walk, using both their arms and legs to scoot across the ground and building upper body strength in the process. PTA members Cindi St. George and Sue Perakakis spearheaded the project, and they were joined by numerous parent volunteers to paint the movement pathway in early June. The idea was to create a unique space for Unqua students that incorporated exercise and movement without requiring any balls or supplies. Physical education

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

Massapequa High School students raised nearly $2,500 to benefit children battling cancer at the recent Catch A Wave fundraiser. The donation was presented to the pediatric oncology department at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center. Senior Molly Guarton, who was a patient at the facility more than 10 years ago, initiated the fundraiser as a way of giving back to an organization that helped her through a very difficult time in her life. She was diagnosed with leukemia at 2 ½ years old and was successfully treated at Cohen’s. Molly

graduated from high school in June 24 and is headed to college in the fall. Catch A Wave was a beachthemed musical fundraiser that provided an opportunity for students to showcase their varied and incredible musical talents while helping others. This year’s show featured 31 acts. Students made donations to hear their friends perform. In addition, the central hallway of the school became a “boardwalk” where Massapequa High School clubs sold items to raise additional funds for the cause. The Dog Rescue Club

sold dog treats and human treats and the Gay Straight Alliance sold rainbow colored leis in honor of Pride month. There were also numerous raffle baskets and other prizes donated by students. When it was time for the concert, students sat on beach towels on the gymnasium floor and had their own beach party. “It was very important to Molly and her friends to do something to give back to the hospital that helped save Molly’s life,” health education coordinating chairperson Denise Baldinger said.
