Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Lunch will be provided after the clean up, courtesy of Port Diver. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to

CSLI also runs programs for camps, schools and any other interested groups that include activities such as shellfish hatchery tours, marine life identification, plankton identification under microscopes, use of the interaction presentations at the Marine Stewardship Education Center and touch tank presentations. wasps and termites. The first-grade ensemble performed several songs such as “Oh What a Beautiful Garden” and “Take Me Out to the Garden,” which were parodies of other wellknown songs. Then each group of insects recited short songs and poems.

Musicians Shine Five student musicians from the Massapequa UFSD, all of whom are attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), showcased their impressive talents at the LIHSA Spring Music Festival. Singer-songwriter Toni Ciccolella wowed the audience with her original song “Save Me.” She also lent her voice to several numbers, ranging from “Trip It In A Ring” from Purcell’s baroque opera The Fairy Queen, to the Motown soul classic “I’ll Be There,” to the traditional standards
“Route 66” and “Take Five.” Multitalented musician Alyssa Mener sang a wide variety of tunes. She performed two solos — “Voi Che Sapete” from Mozart’s timeless comic opera The Marriage of Figaroand the standard “The Nearness of You — and joined fellow vocalist Toni on many of the same numbers. She played guitar on the original student song “With You” and performed double duty (guitar and vocals) on the pop hit “Issues.” Double threat Christian
Scala played guitar and sang on the progressive acoustic number “I Blew It Off,” and joined his fellow Massapequa vocalists on “Trip It In A Ring,” “I’ll Be There” and “Route 66,” among others. Gifted guitarist Jason Stile performed on “Issues” and “With You,” while versatile musician Harlee Torres played bass on the fusion jazz tune “Thing of Gold” and the Frank Zappa rock classic “Echida’s Arf,” and sang lead vocals on the progressive acoustic hit “I Blew It Off.”

(NAPSI)—For too many workers in the U.S., a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work doesn’t ring true. That’s especially the case in certain sectors of the economy including construction, food service, agriculture, janitorial, retail and hospitality. Too often, employers mistakenly or intentionally deny workers the wages to which they are legally entitled, such as the minimum wage and overtime. That’s where the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division comes in. The agency enforces federal labor laws. If it investigates and finds that an employer failed to pay at least the minimum wage and overtime, it can recover unpaid wages on behalf of workers. The Wage and Hour Division wants to make sure those wages are quickly handed over to the workers who earned them, yet finding workers can sometimes be a challenge. But there’s now a new online tool called Workers Owed Wages. It’s available
in English and Spanish and allows workers or their advocates to find out—through a set of userfriendly questions—if they are owed wages currently held as the result of an investigation.

If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Devoting the Day Students and staff at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District celebrated Poem in My Pocket Day on June 12th. It was the 10th year of the literacy initiative, coordinated by library media specialist Melinda
Alford. Students, teachers, administrators and staff members were encouraged to keep a poem in their pocket, either a published piece or one they wrote themselves. Children were given the opportunity to share their selected poems in class or when visiting
the library. Ms. Alford said in the weeks leading up to Poem in My Pocket Day, she taught students about different types of poetry including shape, blackout and Haiku.

Donation Makes a Difference Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently BE KIND, REWIND - Frankie England, right, a dance student from the Massapequa donated $4,000 to the UFSD who also attends Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Nassau Suffolk Chapter recently performed in “Be Kind/Rewind” at the LIHSA Spring Dance Festival. of the Autism Society of America. The school raised $700 from the puzzle piece campaign in April, which is Autism Awareness Month. Families could make a donation and customize

dissected the pellets to they found to try and gain insight into the food create the full skeleton of that owls eat. a paper puzzle piece to be hung in the school. The puzzle piece represents the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The donation was matched by secondgrader teacher Jennifer Lidonnici’s family and also by a former Fairfield teacher. A staff fundraiser raised the rest. Executive Director Susan Reek visited
the school on June 14th to accept the donation. Money will support a day at Fink’s Country Farm for approximately 150 children with autism and their families. Activities will include pony rides, an animal farm, bounce houses, pumpkin giveaways and more.

Fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District wrapped up a year of literacy development by creating their own picture books. Instead of technology, students used paper and pencil. They received blank hardcover books, and the young authors had the option of writing fiction or non-fiction stories.
Jack Chiaramonte decided to write about sports and selected a sports term for each letter of the alphabet. Each page also included a related drawing. Jessica Misita came up with a tale about a monkey who doesn’t like bananas. The project started with students reviewing books by different authors, including “A Picture Book of Harry Houdini” and “Hey

Imagine & Publish Little Ant.” After coming up with topics, the children filled out storyboards with text and illustrations, before creating their final products. The students worked on their stories throughout May and June, and after finishing, they shared their books with kindergarten classes.
RETIREES HONORED - Massapequa School District Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis, center, honored outgoing board of education trustees Maryanne Fisher and Joseph LaBella on June 21st, their last regular business meeting. Ms. Fisher served on the board for 15 years including three as president, two as vice president and one as secretary. Mr. LaBella held his post for six years, including one year as secretary and this past year as vice president.
