Each senior submitted will be considered a candidate for 2014’s Savvy Senior King and Queen, who will be announced and crowned at AGES’ Fifth Annual Savvy Senior Day on Grandparents Day Sunday, September 7th, at the Parker Jewish Institute in New Hyde Park, NY from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participating in the coronation of this year’s Savvy Senior King and Queen will be last year’s King, Frank Zizzo of Levittown, and last year’s Queen, Rose Laccone of Whitestone. painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first president of the Southold Historical Society, where a number of his paintings can be viewed. Artists from all over the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions, only 20 works will be selected to be included in the “North Fork Annual” exhibition. It will be from those works that the purchase prize winner will be selected. The work

selected as the winner of the prize will join the permanent collection of the historical society. The winner will be announced at the opening reception for the exhibition, which is being held on Friday, August 8th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All of the remaining artworks selected for the exhibition will be available for sale at that time and for the duration of the

exhibition. The exhibit will be on display in the Reichert Family Center, which is located at 54127 Main Road in Southold, from August 9th through August 23rd, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. For more information on this exhibit or other Society programs, please contact the Southold Historical Society at 631.765.5500.

The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/ sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will feature a $500 purchase prize that will be awarded to the best artwork in the exhibit. The show will be held in the Society’s Reichert Family Center’s Cosden-Price Gallery. This exhibit will be on display from August 9th through August 23rd, in the gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” - which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast,

Island Harvest’s SFSP is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the New York State Department of Education. At the local level, the program is managed by USDA-approved sponsors

like Island Harvest. Under the SFSP, lunch meals will be provided to all children 18 years and under without charge at designated sites. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Four children had the opportunity to let their parents know exactly what their military service means to them during an emotional discussion held today at the Rosen Family Wellness Center, part of the North ShoreLIJ Health System. In anticipation of the July 4th celebration, Camilo Serrano, 9, of East Meadow, told a gathering of relatives, health system employees and reporters how difficult it was to be separated from his father, Juan. From 2000-2009, Juan served in the Marine Corps, engaged in Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Today, Juan works for the health system’s World Trade Center Health Program in Rego Park, Queens, a position he’s held since October, 2012. As poised as any public

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reﬂect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www.annualcreditreport. com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

At their June meeting, The Long Island Horticultural Society awarded scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each, to two outstanding LI students who are majoring in horticulture at Farmingdale State University. They are Lucy Contreras, 25, of Massapequa Park, and James Brandt, 32, of New Hyde Park. Ironically, both students have come to the field of horticulture after pursuing degrees in other areas. After attending C.W. Post, Lucy was working towards a Master’s Degree in art at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, when she realized how much she missed Old Westbury Gardens where she had

begun working in 2007. Starting as a member of Visitor Services, she soon became the Plant Shop Manager, and then moved on to the greenhouse where she learned how to propagate plants. This experience made her realize that she “belonged in horticulture” and in 2013 she was accepted into Farmingdale’s horticultural program where she is now a sophomore. Her stated goal is to continue to work in a public garden setting. With an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Nassau Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Stony Brook University, James decided to return to school to pursue his

true passion which began as a teenager working in his family’s backyard. He is now a Senior in Farmingdale’s fouryear degree program in Horticultural Technology Management. To augment his studies, last year James participated in a study abroad program in Florence, Italy, where he studied Italian garden history and design, and this year he has secured an internship in environmental education at Old Westbury Gardens for the spring-summer season. James hopes “to find a place in the world, hopefully on Long Island, where I can work in the horticultural industry and love what I do.”

(NAPSI)—Your next barbecue may be better if you follow these 10 tips from the experts at the United States Department of Agriculture on keeping food safe when cooking outside: 1. When shopping, buy meat and poultry last. Choose packages that feel cold and are not torn. Separate raw meat and poultry from other food in your shopping cart to guard against crosscontamination. Plan to go directly home from the grocery store. 2. At home, freeze or refrigerate meat and poultry immediately. Freeze poultry and ground meat that won’t be used in a day or two; freeze other meat within four or five days. 3. Completely thaw meat and poultry before grilling so it cooks evenly. Use the refrigerator for slow, safe thawing or thaw sealed packages in cold water. You can microwave defrost if the food will be placed immediately on the grill. 4. Keep meat and poultry cold until you’re ready to put it on the grill. If you’re carrying food to another location, keep

it in an insulated cooler with sufficient ice or ice packs so it stays at 40° F or below. Keep the cooler out of the direct sun and avoid opening the lid too often. 5. Start with clean hands-wash them for at least 20 seconds with warm, soapy water—and a clean grill and utensils. 6. Be sure the grill is hot enough to safely cook your food. 7. Remember, meat and poultry cooked on a grill often brown very fast on the outside. Use a thermometer to be sure the food has reached a safe minimum internal temperature—poultry: 165° F; ground meats: 160° F; beef, pork, lamb and veal, steaks, chops and roasts: 145° F-and allow to rest at least three minutes before carving or consuming. 8. Keep hot food hot. After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served—at 140° F or warmer. the same platter that held raw meat or poultry. Any harmful bacteria present in the raw meat juices could contaminate safely cooked food. 10. Refrigerate any leftovers promptly in shallow containers.
