Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand and the Town Board recently announced that the Town will partner with Team Boomer of the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis to host a shoe collection drive. Residents are invited to donate any type of shoe in good condition at one of the following DropOff Locations: Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage), and the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S. Broadway, Hicksville). “The Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic

Fibrosis is responsible for lifesaving work in our community. Not only does the organization fund some of the most talented scientists and researchers, who every day come closer to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, but they also provide critical resources and services for individuals currently living with Cystic Fibrosis,” said Councilman Hand. “All proceeds from this shoe collection drive will go directly to the foundation as they work toward their mission of heightening awareness, education and quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis, while also providing financial support to research aimed at finding a cure.” The Town’s Collection

Drive will run through August 1st. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently recognized the members of the Town’s COVID-19 Response Team as ‘Employees of the Month’ for the month of June. The Supervisor noted that the crew’s selfless commitment to the employees and residents of the Town of Oyster Bay has resulted in a distinguished record of excellence over the past year, during some very difficult times. These dedicated

individuals were tasked with creating a system for contact tracing, setting up testing procedures, facilitating the administration of vaccines and establishing protocols for each and every employee in the Town. Honorees included Bradley Panetta, Nicole Leroux, Sue Cowley, Kathleen DeTurris, Tom Bradke, and Team Captain Ralph Raymond. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, many in our community extended

themselves to help others and the enduring legacy of these times will undoubtedly be the way that people like the Town’s COVID-19 Team took action and made a positive difference at a time when it was most needed,” said Supervisor Saladino. “It has been a true comfort to know that you have gone above and beyond the call of duty to keep the Town of Oyster Bay employees, families and residents safe.”

Town Partners With Team Boomer To Host Shoe Collection Drive

Musician Is Cellist And Composer Students in the Massapequa High School orchestra regularly play music by famous composers, but it’s rare for them to perform a piece written by one of their peers. That was the case this year, as they learned a composition by senior Adriana Kamor, who started writing original music in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adriana said that composing was her way of staying connected to music when schools closed down in March 2020. She used a program called Note Flight, which was recommended by her teacher, Marjorie Spagnuolo, to create new arrangements of pop songs she likes. Soon after, Adriana began crafting original pieces. She has three compositions in the process of being copyrighted. “Chaos and Calamity” is a full orchestral piece, “Last Attacker” is a cello duet

and “Sunrise After Sunset” is for a quartet. All three pieces, she said, reflect her emotions going through pandemic, and each have a different tempo and tone. The high school orchestra began learning “Chaos and Calamity” in December. After several rehearsals, the roughly 90-student ensemble performed it in the auditorium for a professional recording, with Adriana conducting. The orchestra played it again at the senior awards ceremony. Adriana said that creating music on computer software produces a digitized version of the song, so the first time she heard her classmates play the 2 minute, 10 second song live was an amazing experience and really brought her creation to life. “I was really excited to have a full orchestra,” she said. “It felt surreal. I was really ecstatic that everyone was into the piece and put

in their full effort.” Adriana, who plays the cello, got her start in fourth grade at Unqua Elementary School. She said she decided to join the orchestra because she felt drawn to string instruments and the wide range of sounds that they produce. Adriana credits her elementary orchestra teacher, Alison Pearl, with guiding her to the cello. Since then, she has learned under the tutelage of Katherine Cahalan, Jeremy Einhart and Ms. Spagnuolo, and is grateful for the opportunities she has had to grow as a musician in Massapequa. Outside of school, Adriana has played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. In college, she will study computer science at Case Western Reserve University, but still wants to find a way to keep music in her life because that is her creative outlet.

Students Seek End To Gun Violence A team of science research students from Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus looked at the issue of gun violence from a public health standpoint as they participated in the Medical Marvels competition hosed by Northwell Health. The annual event is hosted by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and Northwell Health’s Center for Workforce Readiness, and encourages Long Island high school students to pursue careers in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and math.

Each year’s competition addresses a topic deemed a public health crisis. Ames ninth graders in Kimberly Bruno’s science research class were tasked with proposing solutions to decrease incidents of gun violence. Since the contest was held virtually this year, they submitted a video with their ideas. Ms. Bruno said about 30 schools took part in the event. Students proposed an advertisement awareness campaign for social media, similar to ones that warn about the dangers of smoking and vaping. They

also analyzed current gun laws to see if any improvements could be made and recommended the creation of urgent care centers specifically focused on mental health. All of the ideas had to be approached from a health perspective and demonstrate why these proposed solutions could help solve the problem. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is observed during the first week of June, and Ames students and staff were encouraged to show their support by wearing orange to school.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 7th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event begins on the morning of July 22nd at 9am and continues non-stop for 24

hours until July 23rd at 9am. The event benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. The Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony on July 22nd at 5:00 pm to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service in the conflict. Adding to the spectacle, will be a parachute landing on the field conducted by

the “All Veterans Group,” which will deliver the official ball. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique way while also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whether you enjoy lacrosse or are just looking

for a fun-family event, I invite residents to be a part of the festivities.” The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Long Island Air Force Association, Team Red White and Blue and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. The event features 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. The score is

cumulative, resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. Participants include children, adults, seniors, youth, high school, college players and veterans. Teams that accommodate

PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually.
