day, visiting the Air and Space Museum. Some went on to see more of the Smithsonian. Others took in a Washington Nationals game! To the delight of the Mets fans along on the trip, the Nationals lost to the Reds 6-2. The next day, they toured the Capitol and the Supreme Court. They also went to the National Archives, where the boys saw the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Magna Carta. Finally, on the last day, they went to Arlington Cemetery. They visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, saw the changing of the guard and visited the burial place of President John F. Kennedy and his family. Following that, they had an emotional tour of the Pentagon and the Pentagon 9/11memorial. It was a jam-packed fantastic few days in D.C.

Online Tee Time
This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic
crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. The auditorium at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District became a miniature amusement park when the fourth grade hosted its Roller Coaster Convention. Children worked in small groups to construct roller coasters out of paper. They spent several weeks designing and building
their creations with some ending up as tall as the students themselves. The frames included columns, beams and diagonal supports and the tracks contained dips, sharp and wide curves, loops and funnels. The goal was to successfully get a marble from its release point to the end. The fourth-grade science
curriculum includes a study on the forces of motion. Parts of each roller coaster were labeled according to the scientific principle that applied such as kinetic energy, acceleration, friction and centripetal force. “The students get to see physics in action and it raises their level of understanding,” said
magnet teacher Loree Moran, who coordinated the enrichment activity. “A lot of it is trial and error. They are using the whole engineering process. To be in the fourth grade and accomplish this is really a tribute to the level of teamwork that they employed.” Each roller coaster had a theme chosen by the group. Designs were based on sports, food, holidays, animals and popular trends. At the convention, students watched as their fellow fourth-graders tested out their designs and were encouraged to ask questions. Kennedy recently attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for Lawrence Joseph Brussell, Jr. and presented him with a citation in acknowledgement of his accomplishment. For his Eagle Scout project, Lawrence transformed a piece of land into a beautiful garden at the Carman Road School for physically and developmentally disabled students.

Folder Contest Kaelyn Hanley, who just completed third grade at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, was the winner of the inaugural FLES folder contest. Her design will be featured on folders that will be given to all students in the district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program to keep their work. Massapequa launched the FLES program for the 2016-2017 school year.
All third-graders received 20 minutes of Spanish instruction twice a week, and the initiative will expand to fourth grade next year. Spanish teacher Lisa Silveri said the first year of the FLES program was a success. Students learned basic conversational skills and also explored Spanish culture. “The children learned so much in such a short amount of time,” she said. “They developed a love of language and made

connections to their core subjects.” William Anderson, the curriculum association for world languages and ENL, said the contest was created to give students ownership in the program. A winner was chosen from each third-grade class in the district and a finalist was named at all six elementary schools. Superintendent Lucille F.
