While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families

each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The program is on Wednesday, July 13th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at YES Community Counseling Center, 152 Center Lane, Levittown. The purpose is to empower young adults to navigate the challenges of starting college and assist parents during this sensitive milestone. The evening will kick off with a panel of speakers addressing young adult social/emotional growth and common college transition issues. Next, The Safe Center LI will focus on creating healthy relationships, including sexual assault prevention. The final part of the program offers a choice of workshops from study skills to match one’s learning style to what college students should know about drugs and alcohol. A separate parent discussion will focus on ways to support their child’s transition to college. Naloxone training will also be offered to both parents and young adults. Spanish translation services will be available for parent sessions. The College Transition program is also supported by YES Community Counseling Center’s PACT Initiative and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition. To register online, visit www.bridgesyes.org. Hawkins’ will be preceded by a series of amplified showcases and song swaps, along with a musical tribute to Lois Morton and an open mic, during the afternoon. Paula Cole is a Grammy Award-winning singersongwriter best known for the 1990s radio hits “I Don’t Want to Wait” and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone,” while Sophie B. Hawkins is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough debut Tongues and Tails, which featured the hit song “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover.” Prior to the evening concert on the park’s [Harry] Chapin Rainbow Stage, Michael Kornfeld, president of the Folk Music Society of Huntington and editor & publisher of AcousticMusicScene.com (an online publication for the folk, roots and singersongwriter communities), conducts an on-stage conversational interview with the evening’s featured artists at 7:15 p.m. He also hosts a series of amplified showcases and song swaps from 2-5 p.m. near a canopy tent on the upper lawn area overlooking the stage.
