We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. GIRL SCOUT TEA - Girl Scout Troop 2528 recently attended a tea celebration, held in honor of re-organizing the Brady Park Library. Over a dozen Girl Scouts and seniors worked together to successfully reorganize and invigorate the Brady Park Library for all to enjoy. Joining for the celebration were Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato, the scouts, Troop Leader Jen Pravato, Senior Center Director Michele Bartolo and senior citizens Grace Small, Richard Grefig, Margo Moore, Jeanette Silvestro, Tina Proscia, Gloria Walsh, Josephine Lo Castro, Joan Maenza, Lena Mastrandrea, Patricia Fergus, Joan Hundt and Esther Gallub, who all came together to celebrate a job well done.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently distributed 101 Gold Awards during a ceremony hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Reanna Sacks, Marina Sapeta and Lauren Szalay of Plainedge were among awardees. Now in its hundredth year, the Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. Each girl spent more than 80 hours over the past year planning, executing and presenting the results of her project, which aimed to make the world a

better place for others As well as herself. “We are extremely proud to celebrate the achievement of over 100 local young women earning their Girl Scout Gold Award during its 100th year,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, making Lauren, Marina and Reanna part of an exclusive group of women with the tools to become leaders in the 21st century.” Gold Award projects have positively impacted girls’ lives, their

communities and the world for 100 years. Approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that addressed local or global issues. After identifying an area of interest, a successful Gold Award recipient performs hours of research and prepares a project proposal to be submitted for feedback and approval to the Girl Scouts Council before embarking on her project. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is currently offering registration for the Town’s Summer Hockey School program, developed by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Hockey enthusiasts can sign up for any number of weekly sessions from one week to all eight weeks of the program. For 22 years, The Rinx has provided quality Hockey Camps and Clinics. We are pleased to offer the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay that same quality Hockey experience with all the FUN that comes from playing this great sport. The program will begin on June 27th through August 19th, will include a full day of on-ice and office training run by trained hockey professionals.

Throughout the week, participants will receive 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of off-ice training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate skills program is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. for ages 5 through 12. The intermediate program will include 15 hours of onice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink. The advanced session is from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is geared for travel players ages 6 through 14. The advanced session includes 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 hours of training per week off the ice. Both skill programs focus on shooting, passing, agility drills and field sports. There will be a recreational swim session and lunch is included every day.

The Summer Hockey School sessions will be challenging, but will result in newly developed skills for our young hockey players. Each class will be filled with useful tips and techniques to fully develop each student’s hockey playing abilities. The Rinx Summer Hockey School not only offers a fun way to spend the summer, but the perfect opportunity to fine tune hockey skills. Town of Oyster Bay residents receive a 10% discount on any of the training weeks. Early arrival and late pick up will also be available. Town Beaches Open Daily allow non-residents on weekends for a daily fee of $60. Tappen Beach allows non-residents to purchase a season pass for $120 or pay a daily entrance fee of $40, both only good for Tappen Beach. Senior citizens, 60 and older, are able to obtain a beach sticker at the tollgates at no charge by showing their car registration and Town issued Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, available at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30, plus a $2 photo fee. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. Residents who are Veterans/active military located within the Town of Oyster Bay can

pick up a Seasonal Sticker for $30. For Tappen Only, Non-Residents who are Veterans/active military located within New York State may purchase a Seasonal Sticker for $60. All Veterans must obtain a waiver from the Parks Department Beaches Office located at Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Now that the beaches are open, it’s beginning to feel a lot like summer, and residents will now be able to experience some of the finest beaches around all throughout the season. It’s amenities like these that make the Town of Oyster Bay a special place to live. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

Gold Award Honorees The Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently distributed 101 Gold Awards hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Margaret Hans, Kathleen Krieg, Samantha Muscarella, Julia Schneider and Danielle Tempesta of the Hardscrabble Association were among awardees. Now in its hundredth year, the Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. The girls spent more than 80 hours over the past year planning, executing and presenting the results of her project, which aimed to make the world a better place for others as well as herself. “We are extremely proud to celebrate the achievement of over 100 local young women earning their Girl Scout Gold Award during its 100th year,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive

Director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, making these individuals part of an exclusive group of women with the tools to become leaders in the 21st century.” The five recipients each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them. Their projects are described below: Margaret used her experience of having a tree-nut allergy to create her project, “Food Allergy Awareness: Don’t Share Food.” After realizing how often young children share food, Margaret decided to create an informational video featuring the dangers of sharing food and common food allergies children have. She was able to share her video on food allergies with over 200 second and third graders. Kathleen is a soccer player who was concerned about safety and fairness on the field. She discovered

that the Farmingdale Soccer Club did not have mandatory or consistent training for referees to ensure that games were conducted safely and fairly. She developed a “Referee Training Program” for her Gold Award project, which included a training session, a handbook and quizzes for referees in training. Samantha’s Project, “Changing the perception of ourselves using positive words,” aimed to raise awareness among teenagers that the words we use to describe ourselves can be harmful. By changing the words we use, our perception of ourselves can become positive thus leading to a happy and healthy lifestyle. Rather than choosing words that only describe physical features we should use words that describe our character. Samantha developed an exhibit for her school and local library, featuring a series of photographs that raised awareness

about self-perception. She also contributed articles to a teen magazine and developed a digital presentation of her exhibit. A copy of Samantha’s presentation is available through her school’s guidance office and the public library. It’s hard to believe that individuals that coach sports are not mandated to have CPR and First Aid training. Julia couldn’t believe it either and did something about it with her project, “Preparing Youth Sports Coaches to Handle Injuries.” She organized a First Aid/CPR/ AED training for the entire Farmingdale Soccer Club and each coach, player and referee that participated in the training received a First Aid kit. The club will now be offering training sessions to all coaches each year. With the help of the Long Island Junior Soccer League, Julia’s project will now go beyond her community to other clubs. Danielle’s Gold Award

project, “Building Confidence in Special Education Students Runway,” had two goals: to increase the self-esteem of girls in special education and to break down the stereotypes about these same students. The female special educations students in Danielle’s school district participated in a pageant and had their hair and makeup done by students from the general population giving each group a chance to know one another in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Gold Award projects have positively impacted girls’ lives, their communities and the world for 100 years. Approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that addressed local or global issues. After identifying an area of interest, a successful Gold Award recipient performs hours of research and prepares a project proposal to be submitted for feedback and approval to the Girl Scouts

Council before embarking on her project. The Girl Scout presents her final conclusions as the last step of the journey. Lifelong value comes with having earned a Gold Award. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, Gold Award recipients display more positive life outcomes pertaining to sense of self, life, satisfaction, leadership, life success, community service and civic engagement. Recipients of the award who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank for their achievements and can receive scholarships or other recognition from most colleges or universities. Notable Gold Award recipients include Jan Hopkins, CNN financial news anchor, and Betsy Boze, Senior Fellow at American Association of State Colleges and Universities and President at Kent State University Stark.
