FUNDRAISER COMBATS CHILDHOOD CANCER - Massapequa High School’s environmental club, Team ECHO, presented a $3,000 donation to NYU-Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids on June 21. Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced a collection drive to support birthday parties for homeless children on Long Island. Donations will be collected through August 1st and will support the charitable efforts of Birthday Wishes of Long Island, a not-for-profit organization located in Hicksville. Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the organization provided birthday parties to 1,288 homeless children in 2018, including gifts, homemade cupcakes, goody bags, activities and crafts. “Birthday Wishes of Long Island is a wonderful organization comprised of giving and caring volunteers who help bring smiles to the face of homeless children on Long Island – some of whom have never received a birthday party before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Help bring normalcy, hope and joy to a homeless girl or boy by donating today to this incredible cause.” To support these birthday parties for Long Island’s homeless children, the following donations are sought: - New, unwrapped toys for children of all ages - Batteries of all sizes - Wrapping paper For those who wish to

STUDENT TAKES TOP SPOTS - Isabella Palfi of the Massapequa UFSD, a student in the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Horse Science and Management program, earned first and second place at the annual Barry Tech Horse Show, held at the Riding Center at Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus last month. She took the top spot in Class 1, Walk/Trot/Canter and second in Class 2, 2” Jump Course.
Friendship was the focus at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on May 20 as the community came together to celebrate the dedication of a new koda bench. The project was a team effort as the bench was built and designed by students from Massapequa High School. Technology students under the direction of teacher James DeSantis constructed the eight-sided bench with encircles a tree. It was then painted by art students from Penny Schneider’s classes. Ms. Schneider explained that “koda” is the Native American word for “friend,” so it was an especially meaningful project in a community that uses the nickname, the Chiefs. Birch Lane is the fifth elementary school in the district to receive a koda bench, and the ongoing initiative even sparked the
creation of an illustrated book by Massapequa High School art students, “On My Way to the Koda Bench.” Principal Stephen Aspetti said that “choosing kind” has been the theme at Birch Lane for the past few years, and the addition of the koda bench supports this mission. Located adjacent to the playground, a student can sit there when in need of a friend or a companion to play with. “Sometimes, it isn’t easy to tell if someone needs a friend,” Mr. Aspetti said. “Our new koda bench is going to help us do just that.” The high school students, along with members of Birch Lane’s SADD and Kindness club, performed a skit to remind students what they should bring with them to the bench — compassion, kindness and a game, to name a few. High school musicians Molly Guarton and Mario
Mannarino performed an original song about the koda bench. Fourth grader Riley Donohue, a member of the Kindness Club, then cut the ribbon. All students and staff attended the ceremony along with representatives from the PTA and district as well as Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino, who attended Birch Lane as a child. In her closing remarks, Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin told students that while it is important for them to recognized for their incredible acts of kindness, the most special acts of kindness occur when no one else is watching. “Our new koda bench is much more than a piece of furniture to us,” Ms. Larkin said. “It represents a culture of kindness which we all work so hard to foster each every day here at Birch Lane.”

Fourth graders used modern technology to take a trip back in time at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Jennifer Gonzalez’s class traveled to Colonial
America by creating digital ABC books. Each group had to come up with one word relating to Colonial times for every letter of the alphabet. They focused on culture, historical
events, lifestyles, people and professions from centuries ago. Students used Book Creator on their Chromebooks to create their projects. Each slide included a definition of the word and an image.

Design From The Heart When Fairfield Elementary School Assistant Principal Dr. Kristi Gerhard and Curriculum Associate for World Languages and ENL William Anderson walked into a third grade classroom on June 17, students knew something big was about to happen. After all, Mr. Anderson was holding a large envelope. They were there to announce that Olivia Catalano was the Massapequa School District’s winner in the third annual
Foreign Language in the Elementary School folder contest. Her artwork will be on the cover of the folders that all third, fourth and fifth graders will use next year for their Spanish work. That’s more than 1,600 students at six elementary schools who will see Olivia’s creative piece during their twice-aweek language instruction. Olivia’s design includes different Spanish cultural symbols inside a heart with slogan “Mi Corazon
Español,” which translates to “My Spanish Heart.” She is a student in Laura Marks’ class and her FLES teacher is Luisa Marino. All third graders created submissions for the contest. One winner was chosen from each class, and then the FLES teachers selected building winners. Superintendent Lucille Iconis and Mr. Anderson then chose the folder cover from the six finalists.
