SUMMER CLASSES BEGIN: TUESDAY JULY 8, 2014
Nicole M. Zito of Massapequa Park, NY received her J.D. from Columbia Law School in a commencement ceremony held at Columbia University on May 22nd, 2014. Zito’s outstanding academic performance while at Columbia Law School earned her recognition as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Zito is also a two time recipient of the C. Bainbridge Smith Scholarship from the NYC Bar Association. During her time at Columbia Law School, Zito became passionate about workplace redistributive justice. In advocacy of public
service, she provided pro bono assistance to MYF Legal Service’s Workplace Justice Project where she helped prepare documents for a wage theft litigation. Likewise, she participated in the New York Lawyers for Public Interest (NYLPI) Summer Associate Exchange, wherein she dedicated her services to the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ). At NCLEJ she assisted in drafting a complaint alleging government non-compliance with the procedural requirements of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP Benefits). While at Columbia,

Lockhart Elementary School students learned new strategies to stand up to bullying from Oceanside’s Boardman Elementary School sixthgraders and their principal Dr. Karen Siris, co-author of the book “Stand Up!” with Lisa Roth, which teaches children ways to stand up for their peers. Siris created and implemented several anti-bullying programs at Boardman, which helped change the
school’s dynamic and make the building a more welcoming, accepting and safe environment for learning. She continually presents workshops to teachers, administrators and parents about bullying prevention and intervention, and her impacts are considered to have great potential to be long-lasting. As part of the program she created, sixth-grade ambassadors are carefully chosen each year to
represent a Caring Majority. These students act as role models for their younger peers, and learn how to go from being bystanders – people who watch bullying happen without taking action – to upstanders – those who will speak out against it. In attempt to tackle bullying behaviors, these ambassadors unite to create educational and motivating presentations for their assigned

Massapequa High School recent graduate Grant Neville, a former member of the district’s Life Skills program called “Community Career Connections” gained a new life lesson during his senior year when he worked with his special education teachers Grace Hussey and Tomia Smith to run a donation drive for soldiers stationed abroad.
While job training at the McKenna Senior Center, Grant and his teachers noticed a collection box set up for Adopt-a-Battalion Inc., a program established to collect and send care packages of toiletries and other necessary items to members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed overseas. Grant worked with his teachers to bring this initiative to

Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere. As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on
Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience
those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go. Make it your mission this summer to find the inspiration that has been missing from your life. And once you find it – write about it, take pictures of it, find some new way to capture it… and savor it.

Boardman sixth-graders, Lockhart students and staff left feeling inspired,” said Lockhart social worker Samantha Romano. “The Lockhart community is enthusiastic about putting this program into action and making even more positive changes to their school in the year ahead.”
Life Lessons Continued From 13 3,000 items donated by Massapequa High School faculty, students and staff, and generated an interesting competition between teachers Gail Hayes and Teresa Colgan’s classes when Grant went in personally to appeal to them. The two classes alone raised more than 1,100 items. “The most important lesson Grant may
have gotten out of the experience was bridging the three communities together...school, senior center and soldiers,” Hussey said. “This was a great, meaningful project for him to engage in and a nice way to complete his senior year.” Grant graduated high school with his class on Sunday, June 22nd.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has again received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats. In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which makes the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccines for feral cats more economical to the public by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR ( Tr a p / N e u t e r / R e t u r n ) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats. Tame cats enter Last
Hope’s adoption program. Last Hope’s “Fix-AFeral” program is geared to experienced cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for several cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago. “In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a kind corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense. The requests for help are increasing. We’d begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and often run out of funds by midNovember. We simply did not have enough money to keep discounts available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist

every caller pleading for help, or every feral or cat colony on Last Hope’s radar. Just this week, we received a call from a 95 year old man who had a mother cat nursing kittens in his shed.” The generous grant from the ASPCA will continue to aid in the distribution of “Fix-A-Feral” vouchers so they last the entire year. At the height of kitten season, the time of year when shelters are most inundated with mother cats and kittens, the Last Hope cat hotline averages 50 calls a day. TNR is about population control and quality of life for feral cats. In an ideal world, all cats would have human contact and be socialized early in life so they can find loving homes. With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer kittens will be born into feral colonies; thus, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and/ or ending up in shelters. The ASPCA is helping Last Hope to accomplish this compassionate goal on Long Island.

Before the awards were bestowed to the ten scholarship recipients several esteemed guest speakers gave a brief introduction of the organization among them include Kids Helping Kids founder Rob Eslick, former ‘Kids of Distinction’ scholarship recipients Michael Schumer and Dr. Reed Mauser and special keynote speaker Kwasi Enin, who received national recognition for being accepted into all eight Ivy League Universities. “We have so many exceptional young people living in the Town that I’m certain it wasn’t easy selecting just a handful of recipients from the numerous applicants,” Supervisor Venditto said. “I thank the committee for their hard work and dedication in designating these 10 extraordinary individuals.” “This program is very much geared towards recognizing activities done on a youngster’s own initiative,” Robert
said. “We are recognizing kids who participate in activities for the benefit of their community of neighborhood, outside of school-related activities.” The 2014 ‘Kids of Distinction’ winners were recognized during a special ceremony at the June 17th meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, at which time they were presented with a commemorative plaque and a $2000 academic scholarship check from Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. “There are many young individuals who have contributed to the great quality of life we enjoy here in the Town of Oyster Bay. We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative,” Supervisor Venditto said. “This provides a perfect opportunity for them to be recognized for their outstanding achievements. They will surely stand as role models for their peers.”
