Ode To The E Train Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

1997 he founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This non-profit organization provides support, education, and resources to young adults, their families and friends who are affected by cancer. Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment. McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff.

Massapequa High School junior Tanner Knabe was selected as a participant in the Congress of Future and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA, June 28th30th. The Congress, hosted the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Tanner was nominated to represent New York based on his academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology

by American hero and astronaut Buzz Aldrin, science director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. Tanner who has taken numerous advanced placement courses is science and math, as well as technology classes, said he is “excited about the opportunity and about representing Massapequa High School.” According to the Academy, the purpose of the event is to “honor, inspire, motivate and direct” top students in the country who aspire to become scientists and technologists. During the three-day Congress, he

and other students from around the country and listen to Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners speak about leading scientific research, obtain advice from the deans of top tech universities, become inspired by fellow teen prodigies, and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future of science and technology. In addition to attending the Congress over the summer, Tanner plans to visit several colleges that have biochemical engineering programs. He hopes to one day develop and advance technologies associated with prostheses.

Scholars at the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) regularly augment their studies with fieldtrips and lessons that help them apply what they are learning in real, hands-on ways. One such experience was their recent trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. P-TECH scholars were given an exclusive museum tour by the Cradle’s Competitions Coordinator Kerri MacKay. The teens were encouraged to interact with the exhibits in a compelling lesson on the history of aerodynamics and rocketry. They also enjoyed a private viewing of the museum’s planetarium show in the immersive JetBlue Sky Theater. Afterward, the scholars applied their problem solving skills in a practical workshop, conducted by museum Academic Coordinator Rick Angler. In a special activity designed to increase scholars’ science and engineering knowledge, the teens were required to work collaboratively to apply mechanical engineering concepts. The scholars experienced the direct effects of the mechanics of energy - how it’s generated, stored and moved - by applying the principles of potential and kinetic energy. “One of P-TECH’s goals is to consistently offer our scholars opportunities to challenge themselves and improve their knowledge,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “Dynamic lessons such as those offered by
